one of the easiest ways to IV breed pokemon for the first 1 - 3 31 IVs is using dittos.

You catch ~40 dittos. On average you will get a 31 IV in 1/6 dittos. This means that in 36 you should get 6 dittos, each with 1 31 IV.

You then try to get a ditto with 31 in each stat.

Then you breed and you breed so the pokemon is kinda like this:

Poke's IVs: X/X/X/X/X/X Ditto's IVs: X/31/X/X/X/X

Breed till you get:

Poke's IVs: X/31/X/X/X/X

Then you breed that poke with a diff ditto:

Poke's IVs: X/31/X/X/X/X Ditto's IVs: X/X/31/X/X/X

Till you get:

Poke's IVs: X/31/31/X/X/X

At this point you can either breed:

Poke's IVs: X/31/31/X/X/X with Poke's IVs: X/31/31/X/X/X

or

Poke's IVs: X/31/31/X/X/X with Ditto's IVs: X/X/X/31/X/X

In the first case, you try to get the parents to pass on both of the 31's and then hope for a random 31

In the second case you hope for the egg to get all 3 31s from the parents.

This makes it easier to start IV training... so that you can get say a gastly with X/X/X/31/31/31 and then try to breed for def and HP. For a gastly with 31/X/31/31/31/31.

As well, before hand you need to breed in the nature of the pokemon. As such, you will also get ditto's that have the right nature. Say Timid.

Then you will breed:

Poke's IVs: X/X/X/X/X/X with Timid Ditto: X/X/X/X/X/31

To get

Timid Poke: X/X/X/X/X/31

Now for those that don't want to be breeding for ever, I would recommend simply breeding till you get a pokemon with:

The correct nature
31 HP
31 Speed

This is because:

1) a 10% boost and a 10% decrease for a stat matter more than a perfect 31 stat
2) not having 31 in HP can lead to being killed when you normally wouldn't.
3) Not having 31 in speed will make you go second to other pokemon that you should go first with or tie with. Speeds are match vs each other and as such it is important to get the max speed you need on each pokemon.

The reason Attacking and Defending IVs are not as important as HP or Speed (still important, but not as important) is because attacking has a scale, you can hit high or low on the damage scale, As such, a change in the attacking or defending IVs will result in a change in the upper and lower bound of the attack, but will not change the average amount of damage your poke does by very much.

Breeding for correct nature and 31 HP and Speed really only takes a few hours once you get going and start hatching 5 eggs at a time .

You do get a magikarp for 500$ at the end of the bridge. So theres always that, I always did love Gyarados. But yeh, Emboar is nasty and all but I just can't see it being worth it with the lack of any alt for the other 2 types. I can get by without a water for the most part, but I have alot of trouble without a good grass.
