I was going to "rent" this but got turn down by reading some of this post. I was ADDICTED to Civilization 2 and i sucked hard on that game, all i did was just negotiate and then insta betray whoever stood in my way. Literally like 8 years after i forgot Civ 2 i tried Civ 3 (or was it 4) and started to learn more about it, also with Alpha Centauri. I had to delete them tough cause this game pretty much destroy your life HARD.

Ive never played a game so addictive as Civilization.

I remember as a kid I was so hooked on civ 2 that I would play it all day until I got so tired that bad decision making clearly started to affect my civilization. Then Id go to bed and as soon as I woke next morning sit down at the computer and continue playing. Eventually bringing some breakfast to the computer. Awesome times :D

I played a little bit of some of the later games especially Alpha centauri but never got quite as hooked on those.

Dunno if I should get Civ5. Im worried it will cut into my SC2 playing :-|

On a serious note, can anybody elaborate on the modes of multiplayer? Is each turn time restricted or how does it work?

^Honestly, if you're a huge fan of civ2 (despite all the OP stuff...Leo's Workshop, I'm looking at ya) you just won't be that interested in civ5. If you've played Civ4 even, the satisfaction of winning a Diety game on a huge map vs. lots of computers is immense...I'm not even close to the best player of civ4, but every turn I felt like I had to do everything right just to compete. Max difficulty on civ5 is not even close to that exhilaration. But that's just my opinion, honestly just to play for 1 hour and have fun, civ5 is a great experience.

Well, the engine of Civ 5 makes mods better, though. I didn't bother with mods in Civ 4, even good ones such as FFH or whatever than fantasy mod is, because they all still use the stack of doom. A game like that using Civ 5's 1UPT and hexes would be awesome, though.

Actually stacks of doom get raped in FFH by a ton of spells. Trying a SoD strategy will get you ripped apart by ring of flames or whatever.

I'm terrified of getting this game because I don't need my GPA to be hurt even more by games this semester.

What is the point of island and water maps if the AI doesn't build a Navy, and even if it does build a few ships they attack you one at a time or never at all.

AI fail.

I played Civ 2 a really freaking long time ago, and hadn't played a civ game but decided to pick up Civ 5 yesterday. It takes some getting used to, but I can tell once I devote the time to it it'll be great. I have never played any multiplayer Civ before, if anyone wants to play a game feel free to add me, my steam ID is Pobearo.

Doesn't matter if the AI is in control. They just do not build navies, period.

I've been playing around on some of the harder difficulties and I always run into the same problem.

One of the AIs masses a large army with several close cities, and has a great general stationed at each city. They get an INSANE bonus and my units are literally unable to even damage them.

Personally I thought Great Generals were worthless before coming up against that. I always used them to just create a Golden Era. Anyone have any tips on using/dealing with great generals?

Maybe it's because I'm only playing King difficulty, but I've never seen the AI defend too well... Are you wearing the city/units down with ranged bombardment first? Late game coastal cities are cake with a few battleships.

Yeah, when it comes to tactics, the AI is pretty retarded. Usually you can roll over them even with 30% of their armysize. Attacking single file, not attacking exposed ranged units, ignoring terrain... it's bad. But that's pretty much always been the case with Civ, and it never stopped the game from being ridiculously addictive.

I am only on king difficulty and this is my first civ game but the way i get around this is by teching faster than the AI to siege units and longswordsman(then muskets cos they cost no iron) and getting alot of veteran units. Then you can comfortably stop an invasion on multiple fronts(the computers will gang up on you) with your +40% footsoldiers and a +40% catapault at your borders. If it gets too difficult you can put up a citadel as well, which with range behind it will kill any unit the next turn that comes near it.

The best part is that if you manage to keep your units alive u will have ridiculously powerful units later on. You simply cant lose in your turf with +25% great general +X% homeground advantage and +40% terrain bonus. I think one leader even gives +15% adjacency bonus too. . .

So I'm playing Darius right? I've already set up my second town, and I'm starting to panic as Iron is finishing since I'm the last one to reach Classical, and I got two war tending nations that I've sort of pissed off right next to me. So I'm panicking as my Iron is finishing, hoping I'll have at least 1 node around me. And then I see this.

Needless to say, I nearly cried in joy as I was able to pump out Swordsmen and take out the Iroquois capital who was about to death push Washington (my best ally) and move to me.

Not sure if this has been posted before but Horsemen are ridiculously overpowered in this game. If you want some lulz you can just play as Greece, found a quick second city near horses, go for a companion cavalry rush and win the game.

If you want some numbers. Horsemen are stronger than swordsmen, move faster, are ancient era units, and don't require iron.

Pikemen are pretty damn far down the tech tree compared to companion cav.

Anyone else find the Babylon GS slingshot to riflemen to be ridiculously easy to win with?

Just one thing I'd like to add:
Never ever underestimate the power of a citadel. Find a tile that's worth the least somewhere close to your capital (a desert tile right next to it for example), make the general create his citadel there and park your strongest direct-combat unit there. Capital (or any other city, but C5 is all about the capitals) becomes nigh-conquerable. +100% defense and 3dmg/turn to all adjacent tiles, seriously?

And on another note:
If you have trouble handling some large blobs just whittle them down/kill them from afar. I've discovered that nothing stops a large group of riflemen like a pair of stealth bombers parked safely on a carrier
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

Yea, but if you invest too heavily in horses, once pikemen come along your army is going to be useless. I mean, AI might not be smart enough to abuse this, but w/e >_>

AI sucks at combat in this game. Basically, the only thing I like in this entire game is the limit on strategic resources not allowing you to spam dominant units for the era. It makes for some pretty damn interesting strategical options.

To be fair, here's how I see C5 compared to C4 for example:
+ limits on strategic resources
+ city fighting
+ ranged attacks
+ hexes instead of squares
+ 1 unit/tile (but that's rather minor for me)
+ maintenance costs on roads/railroads and railroads increasing production
+ social policies are pretty nice

- diplomacy, which in C5 is practically non-existent and diplomatic win is a joke - you get cash, you build UN, you pay city-states = you win! (and where's my detailed diplo screen where I can see who likes/dislikes others, why, how bad is it and what are the current deals all around)
- AI being dumb as fuck when it comes to warfare, if my 2-3 units can defend indefinitely against AI's 15 units, what does that mean? (and domination victory only requiring capitals to be captured is some kind of a joke)
- city states which annoy more than actually influence the game (unless you want a diplo win or are really strapped for luxuries/strategic resources)
- 1 unit/tile and I'm talking about civilian units here, why?!
- small choice of tile improvements (cottages, I miss you!)
- basically no trade network which leaves you with even less stuff to do (and no foreign trade routes are a big lol)
- no health issues/pollution/global warming
- no religion (note: I liked religion in civ 4 with all the things it brought to the table, I disliked the idea of it being a way to achieve diplomatic victory)
- social policies are nice but they're not enough, and there even isn't anarchy past 1 turn when you switch between opposing policies
- unit promotions being rather crappy, past some really advanced ones and the insta-heal

So basically, they made it a bit too simple in my opinion, and by doing so, they've removed stuff that kept you occupied so it didn't feel as boring. In C5 if you're not currently waging war (the one you're involved in that is, I once waged a war against Rome which lasted over 2000 years and I didn't even know where Rome was on the map the entire time and didn't see a single unit of theirs past the initial scout, all I saw were some dumb demands of peace treaty for everything I have), you don't have much to do at all.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.
