Settlers of Catan is awesome. Nothing at all like civ, though, other than that they're on hexes.

This game looks gorgeous, and it really sounds like they've improved on the parts of Civ 4 I found to be weak and tedious. High hopes!

so me and my friend have plans for a 14ish hour long civ5 marathon on saturday... 2v2v2v2v2v2 style, large map... lots of fun. we used to do it on emperor in civ4 and could never consistently win, and it was always big long epic games. can't wait for the weekend!
any of you with similar plans? or am i one of one nerds with no life who love civ :D

Me and some buddies did 18 hours straight of Civ4 a few times. Was intense, All techs researched and 1 turn unit production, railroad on every tile. You just couldn't break anyone open, it was just doom stacks back and forth with no actual territory gain. The system Civ5 opts for hopefully does away with most of that, we'll see.
I plan on playing the shit out of it

this looks 100x better than civ4 lol

I'm really excited, and I like a lot of the changes (combat, social policies, the city-states mechanic) but I'm worried about the suitability of the economic changes to competitive MP. To wit:
- It seems like that with less "snowball" percentage-based modifier buildings and traits, more empire-wide effects (happiness, culture) and less extremely useful tile improvements (e.g. 5 gold from towns) city specialization is a lot less important; so I'm worried that great city planning won't give you as much of an advantage.
- Workers take a long time to build and improvements seem less effective, meaning that perfect worker control won't give you as much of an advantage.
- The tech tree is narrower, so there are maybe less crazy tech beelines available.
We'll see how it goes.

Hey, 5 turns is like 50 years, or 10 years in the late game! That's a lot of fucking anarchy!

i never palyed a Civ game but this one look really nice. I'll give it a shoot. I need something to wait until fallout 3 vegas

Buying it then playing the tutorial, going for 1 campaign mission, then off to 3v3 with my buddies I go. They plan a similar route, and theres capabilities of a 6v6, fucking epic!
P.S. what do you guys think about the simultaneous turns system? to avoid those super long games where people afk for 15 minutes lol.
|
So I caved in and pre-installed it on Steam so I can play it as soon it's available. I even paid the $10 extra for the Babylonians and other bonus stuff. The original Civ was probably the first game I played. I was like 6-7 at the time so these games have been a part of me for longer than SC.
Hopefully (or maybe not, I'm in school) this game holds my attention a little better than SC2. I'd say I put 100+ hours into III and IV each, and then a bunch into I and II back in the day. It probably should.

Well, it's hardly new -- I don't think I've ever played a multiplayer game of Civilization without simultaneous turns. I know it was around in Alpha Centauri and Civ 3 & 4.
