basketballmonster.com shows the SGP (standard gain points) of each category and this tool is extremely useful in putting together a well balanced roster. make sure you adjust the league settings and under display options, to check "show values". Howard's actual stats for 08/09 show a value of -6.03 in FT% which means that Howard singlehandedly will cost you 6 points in FT% when compared to a league average player. Howard's FT% value is the single greatest impact in any category for last year. Howard was an absolute monster in Reb and FG% but his values for those categories last year were a combined 5.74. That means his overall value in FT%, FG% and Reb combined were a net negative compared to league average. Despite his huge numbers everywhere else, Howard was ranked only 47th overall in value for a standard 12 team 9 category roto league and that goes to show you how much his FT% dragged down his overall value. Of course for roto leagues that do not use FT% as a category, or for points leagues, Howard was probably a top 5 player. I've fiddled with different custom excel spreadsheets and I've found that they are typically too cumbersome to use effectively at a draft or an auction. However, if you are willing to pay 50 bucks, there is a program called hoops lab available @ rotolab.com. This custom program is especially useful for auctions because you can manage your budget, see inflation/deflation values, and track categorical projections for the entire league in real time. Honestly though, I would probably not recommend it for a snake draft unless it is a very serious high stakes league since it probably won't be worth the investment. There are various paid subscription sites that provide detailed projections but the quality of these projections vary wildly and I often question the value they provide. If you want to go the free route, which is probably recommended unless you play in high stakes leauges, the best bet would be to go to basketballmonster.com, set the league settings for your league and run the numbers based on last year's actual stats and then make adjustments based on role changes, personal preferences, etc. You can cut and paste into excel and fiddle around with it by sorting based on different categories, etc. This also will give you a significant edge against most casual fantasy players.

"If it doesn't have to be a basketball player, George W. Bush. I would dunk on his ass, break the rim, and shatter the glass," LeBron told Maxim.com. The seven question interview was largely centered about dunking.

It goes against everything I stand for. I hate him even more than Kobe. So please, do my soul a favor, and don't post any more quotes that paint LeBron in beautiful sun shiny light. I'd like to hate the man forever and ever. I'd like that so much.

![]() i guess these are the kinds of nuances that make the difference edit: just did a draft for the less important of 2 teams, i decided to punt ft% and pick rondo 4th and go from there, left 3s really late but i think brooks and morrow are going to be decent in pts/3s + Show Spoiler + ![]() criticism/advice? pretty big noob at fantasy here so be nice

1. Pay very close attention to the league settings. The roster spots, the number of players on each team, the size of the benches, any sort of IL type function, the categories, roto vs. h2h vs. points, etc. The first step in coming with any sort of strategy in a league is to know the settings you'll be playing with. 2. Tenbagger's post regarding the numbers part of fantasy basketball is better than anything I could give. I've previously relied quite a bit on basketballmonster.com, along with personal tweaking based on my own evaluations/experience. The math they use seems solid, so their player valuations (as long as you're using the right settings) are pretty reliable. 3. When actually drafting, you don't want to be using something like basketballmonster.com the whole way through or you'll run out of time (assuming Yahoo draft time constraints). The key to effective drafting is preparation, which is where basketballmonster.com and whatever spreadsheet work you can come up with come into play. You want to know what players typically go in the first few rounds, and their statistical strengths/weaknesses. You want to be able to "eyeball" your first few picks and have a pretty good idea of what you need work on and what you're strong in, without looking at a spreadsheet. The further down the draft you can do this, the better. 4. Roto vs. H2H: Generally, punting is only recommended in H2H leagues. The reason why you generally don't do it in Roto is because you really need to maximize the points you can get, and the more categories you can get points from the better. Being really dominant in certain categories works well in H2H, because you want to consistently win those categories on a weekly basis, even if it means overloading. In Roto, you'd ideally earn each point in each category by as little as possible, so that you can try to get more value in other categories at the same time. 5. However, it should be noted that punting categories does occasionally work in Roto, but typically only in very competitive leagues because the total amount of points needed to win is usually smaller (since everyone is competing hard and the disparity in points is smaller). In less-competitive Roto leagues, it typically comes down to approximately 3-4 teams fighting for first, so the amount of points you need to win is higher since all of the top teams are dominating in several many categories. 6. It is very important to max out the number of games played for every roster spot in Roto. Every point, rebound, assist, etc. is important and you're just giving them away by not maxing out your games played. 7. You have to incorporate the amount of attempts when calculating the impact of a player on your %s. A player who shoots 90% from the FT line with only 2-3 attempts per game, will be less valuable than a 85% shooter who attempts 8-9 a game. A good thing to keep in mind is that players who score a lot of points, will typically have a greater impact on your %s, so it's important that they be at least decent in those categories. Beware of "category killers" like Dwight Howard and his FT%, or the pre-injury Arenas and his FG%, as those players can single-handedly cripple an entire category to the point where you'd need the rest of your team to be strong in that category just to be above-average. Lastly, generally, the later in the season it is, the harder it is to improve %s categories.

H2H/roto, categories, # of teams, etc. cyric's post above is spot on. punting a category effectively takes you out of the running for the title except in very deep and/or competitive leagues. For the average league with a few casual players and 10-12 teams, winning the league while punting a category is basically impossible. balance and the flexibility that comes with it is extremely important. you want to be in a position where you can capitalize on the clumping that will invariably occur within the categories. there will be spots where just a few extra blocks or steals, etc will catapult you past 4 or 5 teams. If you are well balanced and competitive in every category, you have more options to effectively manage each individual category to maximize value. You also want to avoid situations where you win a category by a huge margin because it's the same 10 points (10 team league) regardless of whether you win a category by 1 or by 100. Another bad spot is to finish next to last in a category that someone else is punting. For example, let's say someone punted FT% and finished at 69%. You finish at 74% and next to last. Well, those extra 5% in FT netted you absolutely nothing. You could have finished at 70% and earned the same 2 points.

so who to trust? if the yahoo rankings are really that far off i'd like to change them in case somebody stays on the board who is more valuable than they appear and i don't otherwise notice it just did a mock draft+ Show Spoiler + punting assists here obviously, dunno how well i approached it. i might've neglected rebounds after picking 2 big men early ![]()
