I agree with many points of the article, except when you said "This knowledge cheapens any form of competition I see right now, no matter how much I try to enjoy the games". Brood war pros weren't exactly amazing when the game first released, and while many of the top-tier koreans know what it takes to be at the level of a modern (mediocre) A-level player, they choose to use a loose training schedule because they don't require it yet. If winning is all that matters, and say, MVP only has to play 20 games a day to win (he probably plays more), then he's not going to practice more, obviously. Likewise, teams won't hire people to look at replays and determine the best build for a map against a specific player for the players on their team to practice, until they need them.

Once better BW pros transfer (and keep a rigorous training schedule!) we'll see better gameplay, but really, I just compare it to the early days of BW; back when people didn't even use their hotkeys.

I disagree. I find it extremely fun and some matches are just nerdgasmic. I don't share your opinion and i'm pretty sure alot of people agree with me. I too want better games but i think the game is already interesting as it has gone from one base all ins to long epic matches in less than a year.

Interesting article, alot of wierd response though. Was hoping for a BW FE but I guess this is ok.

Initially I was hoping to see Effort in SC2 but hes back to BW. I guess the BW world can spare a few A-class players though. So SC2 gets more entertaining to watch. Tyson, Hyun, Hydra, Shine... finding it hard to figure out and terran players I want rid off, guess SC2 can have Lomo and Canata ;D

I honestly disagree, the current players play for at least 8h per day and they try very hard and dedicates their entire life to the game. And there are hundreds full time and thousand semi-competitive that go to school/work that still dedicate themselves. They all focus on winning. There is way more serious competition in SC2 compared to pretty much every game out there except for BW.

I would give an arm to see Flash/Jaedong play SC2, if only in an alternate universe so they would still play SCBW in this one.

I wouldn't go as far as to say current SC2 competitions are farces, but I definitely see your point that the best-of-the-best are still yet to come. Which is a good thing! :D

Lamest TL article I've read since I joined. Reminds me of the boxing vs MMA 'debate' in it's pointlessness.

No matter what kind of speculation. If current BW pros are so much better at a game they're not even playing right now they shall just have to prove it, you know, in the real world. This is nothing but sentimental blabber with some stats thrown in to make it look more factual.

The elephant is a lie.

Is it really that hard to understand though that the central issue here isn't whether current top BW players would dominate in SC2 or not, it's the fact that until they make the switch SC2 will in many peoples eyes not be the legitimate successor to BW as the most competitive RTS game.

Right now we doubt if the best players today really will be the best players in the future knowing that such extremely talented players still stick to BW.

The issue is doubt and until BW dies and all progamers make the switch to SC2 that doubt will always exist.

May I ask about the Title as well?

"The Elephant in the Room"

What room? Of all the SC2 threads I have read over the last 2 years, very few of them have discussed the transition of pro BW players or the "low level" of play in things like GSL

EITR - ""Elephant in the room" is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed."

The elephant here is the "truth" that people are not accepting.

The fact is, SC2 fans KNOW that BW legends are fucking amazing.
This is not something people deny or avoid. We gladly await every BW transitional pro. If a A-teamer switches to SC2 and crushes MC, do you think people will be upset? NO. They will be GLAD they have a new person to cheer for, a new person to leech strategy off of to play on ladder. You act like SC2 fans have been following certain players for years and are attached to them, which this is not really the case at all.

If anything, the Elephant is present in Brood War fans hearts, the "truth" that is being ignored is that SC2 is a extremely new and, while at it's core similar, VERY different from brood war. You cannot compare the two yet, ESPECIALLY in terms of skill ceilings.

Well said however the author's "elephant" is that the competitive scene in SC2 is a farce because of low skill former BW players that barely practice to get GSL and other tournament victories. His "facts" and "analysis" all point towards this opinion. So the elephant is not that bisu or flash would do well in SC2, its that all the competitions currently being held are not up to the author's standards and therefore by his opinion are farcical. Since this opinion is so widely held (inferred by the authors perspective) yet not discussed its an elephant in the room.

This is of course not my perspective, just clarifying the author's. My perspective is the "elephant" here is actually a dead horse and has been beaten regularly in these self same forums since SC2beta tournaments.

Just argued about this article quite thoroughly on IRC, and I have to say that a lot of people are mis-interpreting it, the, "Elephant in the Room." The point is the practice and mindsets going in to it every day -- why BW pros are better than SC2 pros, and why they will dominate when they come over. If current pros don't step it up, they're going to become irrelevant.

I can see how that might be a construed perspective. However I tend to read editorials similar to a thesis statement and defense which to my eyes is exactly how this article is written. The statement at the start being "The competition in SC2 thus far has been a farce." which is then defended in whichever manner the author chooses. The elephant here is clearly labeled and it is clearly an inflammatory dead horse that has caused a number of threads to be closed.

The wording the OP used to get the reaction he wanted was a little strong, I agree, which ended-up leading to emotional responses rather than raising discussion about the issue at hand, but what we see is just that: a slew of emotional responses automatically adjusted to defend SC2, without realizing what it is the OP is trying to get across. It's funny how one or two bolded statements can blind people so much.

It's called editing for emphasis. Ironic that a "Final Edit" would be edited for emphasis in this fashion? I don't think so. If that is the case and you are correct then the failure lies with the author, not with the majority of the reader base...and please dont counter with "but they are just sc2 kids" A number of respected intelligent posters who are well known BW fans have replied regarding the tone of the article. For myself I am a BW fan that became a fan of SC2 also.

The only part I didn't get was "mc saying Flash would do well in SC2 is a facepalm moment"

Why is it a facepalm moment? I thought it was your own point to say that Flash would own within some weeks.

I don't understand the point of posts like these, they're extremely disheartening and counter-productive, they make it seem like everyone who watches and plays SC2 is wasting their time because the best of the best in BW could switch over and absolutely smash everyone, they just choose not to because they don't need to.

Thats true enough. I feel 100% that everyone here watching sc2 would be 30x more satisfied with their game watching if they started watching and learning broodwar

I don't get why people get so angry and see this as an attack on SC2 or even "the entire SC2 community" as someone in this thread puts it.

I haven't touched BW in 1 1/2 years. I don't watch the streams anymore, I watch the occasional VOD. I couldn't tell you who is in what league or even just who is doing well.

I play SC2 whenever I can, follow every tournament, moderate the SC2 section of the site. I know many SC2 players personally, I go to live SC2 events whenever I have the opportunity. I am part of the SC2 community probably more than most people here. Still I see no reason whatsover to get riled up over this article. Why can't you people just relax? There is nothing offensive in the OP to get angry about.

If this was the case, brood war would of never lost it's popularity.

I follow BW closely, I follow SC2 marginally(Occasional GSL VODs), I can understand why someone is offended by this, you are not offended because you know what BW is , inherent, the mechanics, the scene etc. Even if you don't follow it closely anymore you know it, Alot of SC2 people here don't and it is not suprising that they are offended when they read that the SC2 competition is a farce.

Further article ideas:

Competition in 2001 a farce; Boxer not worthy of being labelled a bonjwa
TSL 1-2: a waste of everyone's time

Ideally, the future will always bring better players and thus better competition. It does in no way cheapen what we currently have. Indeed, if BW maintains remains popular, in a few years similar claims could be made about Flash.

Excellent article and I completly agree with you. I really want to see one of the true sc1 pros come over and just wreak house. It would be amazing to see..... and it will happen, sooner or later. It is unfortunate, but BW's days are numbered. No one knows when, but it will eventually happen.

I would kill to see a few BW A-teamers switch over just to see what happens. Mvp is too small of a sample size.

I will be very happy if more A class broodwar player switch over. Anything that enhance the competitions is good in my eyes ^^. Current SC2 pros are still making mistakes in the game and more competition will hopefully help improve the quality of game play.

Although in my opinion, only the S class and very very top A class broodwar players are likely to do well in SC2. All the other average/ below average A class BW pros will have a large chunk of their advantage nullify in SC2 with the easier mechanics and in the current state of SC2, its more important to be a smart and intelligent players when all builds/ timings/ etc has not completely figure out yet. Probably only the `smarter´ BW pros will have the potential to dominate while the `robots´can maybe do well but can also bomb out badly. I am expecting most of the current top sc2 players to still be at the top.
