Question for Idra: You've said that you don't enjoy SC2 and only play it cuz its the main thing right now. I think i remember you saying you even hate the game? My question is, don't you think you're showing lackluster performance because you don't actually like the game? You're constantly facing opponents who actually enjoy playing, ofc they will have the upperhand against some1 who hates playing...
How can he force himself to like something he doesn't?
Personally I think he should switch to T, I think their ability to be greedy as shit and safe against most all ins would suit Idra better, ensured scouting and when you play as terran people generally dont do retarded shit against T
I think he would rather switch to Protoss, because with T you have to be really aggressive, but Protoss can turtle a little bit more. Also as Protoss i don't think that he could complain about imbalance, whereas with Terran TvP would probably make him very, very mad.
Nope Idra has said if he switched races it would be to terran. Terran plays the most like bw and has the most potential, with good multi tasking and macro terran is a very powerful race. I imagine if Morrow remained T he would win more as well tbh, both of them have good macro/multitasking and terran suits both of them in that regard imo as terran again gets so much benefit from being good at that kind of thing more so then toss/zerg.
Where/when did he say that? I remember him on ITG or SOTG saying that he would play Toss if he didn't play Zerg.

The thought of IdrA playing Protoss is just priceless LMFAO

Hopefully he will win 4-1 tomorrow. I say 1 for Morrow because knowing life he will cheese one game so bad when Idra will go heavy macro mode.
Alive isnt that good NesTea can take him out while half asleep IdrA has better ZvT then NesTea probably (hard to say since IdrA barely gets to ZvT recently) so im pretty sure IdrA would have won the only person in his group i was really worried about was alicia and pretty sure theyve already played so its clear sailing now
Sorry this is really stupid.. Nestea ZvT way better then Idra..
But I hope Idra will show us brilliant play again soon I'm starting to lose hope
I don't know why, since I know that Greg will return. But after browsing the "HotBid's youtube channel appreciation thread", I saw the following video featuring sAviOr, and an amazing write-up about the emotions displayed in it by HotBid (It's featured in the video description)... And I couldn't help seeing Greg in the description after seeing this picture:
So, if this continues, I will bookmark this post for that time, and I am going to let him be happy. Be happy for the things he has achieved as a person and as a player. I've said it before, but no-one has worked as hard as IdrA in the foreign starcraft-scene, and if his days as a progamer draws closer to an end... I'd be damned if he ever says that he never accomplished anything.
Rejoice, Greg. Rejoice in the fact that you shattered barriers, that you slapped some of the (at the time's) best players on the hands and rejoice in doing what you have loved for the last five years.
You have earned it.
This is my version of the write-up... I hope it doesn't hurt all too much. This is the song in the sAviOr video... I figured that it works for this one too.
Ever since the WCG 2011 finals, it has been a long, painful fall for IdrA. Losses to Lucky and NesTea ended his GSL Code S run in the Ro32. A loss to Avenge robbed him of a chance at redemption in GSL Code A, and a spirited attempt at revenge against NesTea fell short in the MLG Winter arena.
Behind stoic faces and resolute interviews, Greg Fields refused to outwardly acknowledge that anything was wrong--it was just a tough stretch, a small slump. Yet deep down, he and his fans knew. It was the beginning of the end, and the Gracken they knew and loved was gone.
Knocked out by MC and Symbol in the Iron Squid qualifiers and all but eliminated at the IEM WC group stage by Kas and Feast, IdrA's downward spiral continued. For the first time in two years, he failed to even win a single set at a LAN. His current winrates in the EGMCS regular season are all below 50%.
As IdrA's play declined further and further into mediocrity, EG made a decision to send IdrA to a showmatch sponsored by the NASL. He was going to face off against mouzCCMorroW, a friend and old rivalry of IdrA.
Despite playing in his best matchup, IdrA put up a great fight, but ultimately lost against the terran. The final score was 4-0 in favor of MorroW.
As the camera followed MorroW, as the other people around them celebrated loudly, IdrA sat quietly and thoughtfully.
This time was different.
His face full of emotion, it was clear that IdrA had finally realized that he is not the player he once was.
IdrA, you should be happy. Never has a player more deserved a thank you and send off from his halcyon days as you do.
It's my Birthday and I'm so sad right now, can't even describe it. It just hurts I think i need to realise that IdrA is not one of the best foreign player anymore...

T_T this might really happen soon, im afraid to say it and i dont want this to be true but i think this might happen sooner than we all think and we all want
Too soon. Really, I think it's too soon to start making speeches for him -.- Remember last year before the EG training house? Yeah, he did even crappier against worse players than now, when everyone was much worse as well. That slump lasted from what, MLG Colombus to Just before IEM Guangzhou, which means it was around half a year that time as well. It's not the first long slump he's been in, and it's probably not the last. Greg is not stupid, and it would be stupid to retire with HotS coming out so soon. I am willing to bet that he's not going to retire before half a year after Hots, or whatever it takes to make that seemingly retarded game playable at a competitive level. At the very least I hope his god damn pride is going to do him something good, and just make him too prideful to acknowledge ''defeat'' He stands in front of a wall. A wall, which he has been at before, and crushed before. Judging by his stubborness, and my undying faith in him, he's just going to keep punching at that wall until it crumbles.

I'm playing my game in pretty high level and I always say that i hate the game and it's bad etc. But I don't really mean it it's just some kind of "funny attitude" more common within fps-scene. I don't think he really hates the game, he is just talking.
He sounded pretty serious on the last ITG (or maybe the one before that). He even said that the then upcoming showmatch with morrow was silly and he didn't wanna play it. I guess the follow-up question for Idra would be what he's gonna do to start performing again.
You're mixing up conversations that happened on ITG and putting words in IdrA's mouths that he never said. IdrA didn't want to play against HUK in Most Evil Genius because he was forced. He was looking forward to playing against Morrow and said he was going to practice hard for it, etc. It was the real deal - "LAN", Live audience, good prize pool.
Yes, I remembered that and corrected it in a later post.

well if i was idra i wouldn't want to play showmatches either. I think he just wants to practice in peace and then play the big tournaments. Showmatches are just hurting him and even he would won one, i don't think it would change anything. I hope EG is starting to realize that idra doesn't want play showmatches at all and won't force him to play them anymore like now. He just needs little peace and lots of training with good players.
How much more training and peace does he need to win? You can't blame his lackluster performance for some showmatches. (Now that I think of it, he was practicing for the Morrow showmatch, it was the Most Evil Genious vs HuK that he thought was a waste of time).
No, but they are making the things worse. Ofc he is always disappointed when he loses, but he can't win either if he doesn't want to play. Everyone will become depressed if he loses 16 rounds without winning even one. He needs to have a period without loses/new disappointments that he could play with less pressure in big tournament. In my opinion the only problem he has is his decidionmaking and it couldbe that bad because of his pressures.
And he need better practice partners like puma, it's no use to play against random American masters.
Well he needs something alright... A complete re-work in his own mindset I'd say.

It happens to even the best of players (look how kaka is doing for real madrid!). It is only a matter of time before he finds his form again! cheers :D
It's not whining, it's called discussing.
his mindset .........

We all love and support you, Idra
I love you, Aocowns.
Such a great post. If you really think about it, it actually hasn't been that long since he's played really well. However, for one reason or another, performance expectation windows for Starcraft are multitudes of time shorter than traditional sports. That's only supplemented by the internet who jumps on every little stupid thing to talk about. Give him time. If Greg still wants to be a top player, he will be. But this isn't just going to happen suddenly.
I'm sorry but he shouldn't need to be cheered up...he gets payed to play a game....he's very good at it. If anything he needs someone to slap him in the face and say "get over it!". If you feel like Z is too weak then change races...he plays enough that he could switch comfortably with tons of practice. Imagine the fanfare they would make if he changed races anyway...everyone would want him at their tourney. If he wants to stay with Z then suck it up and figure out what you can do to get better. Its not a balance issue if DRG can win major tourneys....
Fans here should realize that he gets paid to play a game and complains about it.. that makes me like him less. It doesn't make me want to "cheer him up"....especially when other players have great attitudes and act like champions. Cheer yourself up, Greg, and realize how good you have it...quit acting like a baby and realize that all the fans you have are still behind you even when you "suck"....I swear to God, I'm so sick of rooting for him and watching him defeat himself and acting like a freaking baby.
Sorry if that breaks the "rules" of the fan forum but that's how I feel after being a long-time Idra fan..grow some testicles dude, its time to man up before you whole career washes away.

And you assume that we haven't voiced these opinions before? In fact what makes you think that IdrA didn't rake this last match against MorroW seriously yet still fell short? These things happen, and the player himself might not know what is actually happening (see Jaedong, sAviOr for similar examples). The IdrA we saw in the showmatch was one that tried, yet still fell short. This stuff hurts when you are competetive in nature and still fall short when you know what you have been able to accomplish before, and that is why we cheer for him. We don't want IdrA to fade in to obscurity yet because he's been dear to us for a long time (I will admit that I did not follow him in BW as I got in to it via SC2) and we want to see him prevail once more.
Hopefully this was a wake-up call for him, but even if it wasn't I am not going to tell him how to go about his daily life as long as he is happy.

Not sure what you've been watching, but IdrA is pretty aware of his lacking performance. I enjoy watching him because he's entertaining. It's upsetting that he hasn't done well lately, but I am still a fan and will continue to support him. If this bothers you so much, go support someone else. Nobody will stop you.

Who are you to dictate what other fans should be doing? If some fans feel IdrA needs some cheering, why shouldn't they? IdrA said he would practice hard for the showmatch and he played hard yesterday. Still, he lost fair and square at basically his best matchup against an opponent that played better - that hurts. I'm sure he would appreciate some support since everything has been going wrong for him recently. Now, he isn't asking for support, some fans want to freely provide it. There is nothing wrong with that. Don't you think IdrA wants to stop "sucking"? It's obvious he isn't happy that he is in a massive slump. Your idea that he shouldn't need cheering up because he is good at his job is odd, especially considering he isn't being good at his job these days.
