Because it's disappointing how poor some singers are. If you can train somebody to dance, you can definitely train someone to hold a tune. I don't understand why these training agencies don't invest more time and money into this training. T_T
You only pick a handful for singing ability. The rest are there because of who they know or just to look pretty. It's much easier to train someone to dance than to sing.

There just aren't enough beautiful talented singers who can follow a choreography to fill out all these idol bands. I mean look what happened when SM concentrated dancing ability, singing ability, and appearance in one group . . . it became the most dominant Kpop group of all time in terms of sales in Korea and Japan (TVXQ). It's not that management wouldn't like for every group to be like TVXQ, there aren't enough amazing trainees to go around (especially girl groups, who typically rely less on talent).
a lot of people underestimate how hard it is to dance and sing at the same time. if you're looking to guesstimate vocal ability, MRs are the worst way to go about it; I would suggest off-stage performances/covers on radio stations, or live recording sessions of actual ballads (read: not kpop).
ex:
edit: actually in hindsight, that's a terrible example since she can sing on and off the stage ^^

There are certainly many male idols with no talent but I think that, overall, the bar for male groups is set higher. Maybe a bad female singer's voice just sounds more pleasant to you than a bad male singer. No girl groups will impress me as much as the best male groups. Live performances of Mirotic still amaze me, no matter how many times I've seen it.

Well it's a pretty proven fact that boy groups are far better live than girl groups.
I have huge respect for a band like Super Junior, who have great choreography despite being a huge group
Having more vocalists then one is more of a plus then a need, you don't need many people who can actually sing, (female kpop) is just dance-based and visuals now so there is little need for good vocalists.

I agree, male groups over all are better singers and generally more talented as a group, than some random girl group or i guess even well known groups.
And thanks for the T-ara performance with a seemingly fully recovered Soyeon. A wonderful island with a wonderful people all driving wonderful Hyundais. No one deserved to be a tentative World Wonder than you.

If you want to be a middle of the road group with so-so popularity, sure. But the best groups are ones that can sing and dance and do it well together. I know we like to look at the pretty girls and all, but at the end of the day, it's still music. I know I'm not going to sit through ear torture to see a hot chick when I can listen to a group that can sing really well AND looks good doing it.
edit: IY2 episode 1 just finished a bit ago. I thought it was ok, not as good as the first season. The first half of the show was pretty bad tbh, but the second half was really good. I thought Sunny was hilarious in a few of her moments, and Hyoyeon was really funny as well. Woori really stood out for me too, I thought she was quite good. I miss Kim Shinyoung.

KARA is really popular, #2, only 2 members can sing, and not even very good compared to top tier vocalists. T-ara only has 1 good vocalist(granted a very good one) Sistar has only one good vocalist(also granted, a very good one) Rainbow has hyunyoung, and she isnt very good(not top tier) AS has Raina, but you can see in perfs that Jungah has become redundant Miss A has Suzy and Min, but they are not top tier either nor do they show it in their perfs. Wonder Girls has Yenny and Sunye, other ones can't really sing that well. 2NE1 can sing, but they don't show it in most of their songs because it is not needed. Secret has one good vocalist, and she doesnt need to show it either during perfs F(x) has 2 vocalists, but they usually only use one(Luna).
...
anyone else I miss?
IY2 is oke but the thing is weve all seen this stuff before with IY1, Kang Jiyoung and Suzy pretty good tho.
