Examples of both extremes: Redline gets bonus points from me because of its style and overall animation, while one of the main reasons why i didn't even give Denpa Kyoushi a full episode before dropping it was the absolutely awful animation.

Kirito is absolutely awful. He's as uninteresting and boring as they come, hell i consider magical ninja jesus to be slightly more interesting. And asuna starts out alright and then instantly goes into being one of the worst female characters i've seen in anime with what i'd probably call reverse character development, pretty impressive actually. Overall SAO created an interesting setting and concept and then squandered it completely by focusing it around kirito, SAO's setting with a focus on a guild or a group of characters would've been a ton better i think, or if kirito had been a good character it might've helped too. I however don't think SAO was 1/10 worst anime i ever saw, i considered the first part of season 1 to be a 5/10, which to me is average but the second part was a 3/10 to me, absolutely awful which made me give the show 4/10 as its final score, below average. It's all going to come down to personal taste though, some people might like kirito as a character for reasons that are completely beyond me or they might enjoy the action/setting enough that they'll just ignore/don't mind the flaws. I mean the anime i enjoyed the most out of all was TTGL and it's not because i consider TTGL to be a flawless anime, it has a lot of flaws actually, but the parts of it i did like i liked A LOT. Enough that it overshadowed any flaws it has, to me anyway. Now that anime was one of the first I watched, and I didn't know what to expect from it and didn't have any great expectations of it, and oh boy did it blow me away with its sheer grandiose story. A very solid 8/10 from me and my average rating of anime is 4

Same here, for example I can't possibly give Zankyou no Terror a bad review because to me, its soundtrack is the best I've heard in any medium of entertainment, better than every single movie, TV show, and game soundtrack I've heard.

I listen to almost none of the songs from ZnT on a consistent basis. atm I'd give a lot of OST's a higher score than ZnT's as I have 0 ZnT tracks on my playlists but 20598098235 tracks from every other anime under the sun on my playlists. Listening to it now though and 15 minutes in so my opinion on this matter may actually change.

I'm biased towards it greatly since I've been a longtime fan of The Morning Benders/POP ETC and two of their songs are in it

I think hollywood OST's are hella over rated. Over rated I suppose is the wrong word here though. Perhaps not over rated but when people say they enjoy the music of Hanz Zimmer or James Horner I kinda think it's BS. Because very few people listen to their entire soundtracks on their own. They aren't meant to be played or enjoyed that way on their own because there's a lot of the time there's so many instances where the melody is disrupted or altered in an abrupt way that simply isn't enjoyable to listen to. However, to fit the scene of what's going on in the movie it may be amazing. Many famous composers for movies that while they have a few beautiful/powerful songs that stand on their own the rest of their songs are meant to fit the atmosphere or mood of the movie and are an attempt to be perfect for the movie moment itself rather than be a standalone track that is great all throughout. I think the point I'm doing a poor attempt at making is that I judge an OST by two ways. Does it compliment the atmosphere of the show? And does it have a tonne of tracks I can rip off it and listen to that stand alone by themselves. I guess I take 100x the songs from anime than I do from movies. So far I think I could take maybe between 2-5 tracks from this OST as standalones.

I'm trying to say that I think by a good percentage anime soundtracks often have more solid standalone tracks that you'd like to rip off them than a movies OST. Gladiator did indeed have a great OST.

Like Testie, I also have way more anime music soundtracks than Western music soundtracks simply because they just seem to be overall better as standalone pieces Edit: Beat me to it

DanMach said "screw that, we're not even going to try and pretend to be meaningful. We're just going to have a fun time", which I can understand people saying that means it's even worse because they didn't even try to give us anything meaningful to begin with. For me however it is a lot more enjoyable that way. Not having those cringe moments and just flat out entertainment without trying to be something it's not able to be. Depends on how you approach the show and what you're looking for. If you want it to be a decent story with character developement that exceeds "he's a emo dude wearing a black coat... and that's it" you're not going to have fun with either of the two shows but you'll probably think SAO is better because they at least tried to give us that. Well, that's not really what I meant. For me, SAO didn't feel like a harem that tried to cover it. For me it felt like an MMO adventure where they tried to attach a harem because people love that shit. I didn't particularly liked any of the characters and Kirito didn't make any sense to me, especially when they suddenly turned him into a dense harem MC for a few episodes because they added the harem. However, I didn't really hate him, either. What I liked about SAO was the setting and the tension it brought with it. It was always compelling and I always wanted to watch the next episode, even when it went apeshit with that perverted dude in the second half and the unnecessary father-mother-child story. Also the harem wasn't nearly as prevalent as it was in Danmachi, which is a huge factor for me. I just can't stand harem shows. God, I even hated the few episodes of Clannad where everyone ended up crying because they finally realised Tomoyo would never be theirs. In SAO the few episodes where Kirito got to know the other girls just felt really weird and unnecessary even though the stories themselves were ok'ish/cute. SAO is by no means bad, anyone who calls SAO bad or trash has no idea about the bigger context of what the industry produces. Its certainly a slightly above average show that was ambitious, which probably led to its popularity, because it took an interesting concept and made a competent story with some nice characters. Sure did it fail to reach a lot of expectations people probably had for it after the initial exposure to it? Sure, there were several aspects and characters that went underdeveloped. So I can see where people are coming from when they are disappointed in the show but it was no means horrible. DanMachi is its own thing and the comparison fails below the very basic level of "has mmo type elements". I would agree though that it does not take itself as seriously as SAO did though and that is probably a big point in its favor. Also the characters are better and have the potential to blow SAO's out of the water if the author manages to develop them competently. Saber isn't a blank female character lol. @SAO: Well, people like to shit on SAO because it's easy and everyone does it so one can just jump on the bandwagon. I mean, I can totally understand why people would hate it. I'm just saying that a lot of people just hate it because they have an easy way to feel better that way. I mean, how can you hate on SAO and at the same time glorify things like Nisekoi? @Saber: Well, I only know her from the current UBW adaption so that's probably a factor. But so far she rather blank. I'm still salty about the fact that I can't acquire the complete recordings of the second part for a reasonable amount of money. I have the full movie score for Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King at home and it is really a magical adventure. I can actually imagine a lot of scenes in my mind's eye when listening to the score. Shore is probably my favourite soundtrack composer, followed by Joe Hisaishi (music in Ghibli movies is love) and Jeremy Soule (I have all Guild Wars soundtracks at home and listen to more than 50% of them on a regular basis, Factions is especially great).

As for Saber, she is a supporting character basically in UBW and you know that she has her own route in FSN + her in F/Z so making that statement when you know all this seemed weird to me.

SAO is by no means bad, anyone who calls SAO bad or trash has no idea about the bigger context of what the industry produces. Funnily enough, this is an extremely narrowminded view. It entirely depends on one's standards. If your "standard" for average is the true average quality of all anime produced, then I supposed SAO might be rated higher. But what if most of all anime produced is bad? That isn't even an elitish mindset imo. But anyway, if most anime that is produced is bad, and you have a higher standard than the true "average" for anime, you could easily call SAO bad.

However, as a love story (from at least Yuno's side) it was fucking awesome. I rated it like a 4-5 because I don't remember enjoying much of the show itself. However, Yuno I actually think was a really fucking awesome character once it all came together in the end. So if the show was rated as a pure character piece of her only I'd rate it much higher.
