from a few posts ago, Sentenal, you'd really say that Nadesico was good? There was like 3 good episodes and the movie. The following novelization and game worked out slightly better quality, but still. It was definitely a landmark anime, but I wouldn't recommend it to people unless I know for a fact that they'd do it just for Ruri's bakabaka. The Movie sucked horse nuts, so I dunno why you would say thats better than the actual series. What did you hate about it? I mean, its the same type of light hearted mech anime like FMP!, and would you not recommend FMP to people? I mean, granted, FMP is better, but that doesn't mean Nadesico is bad.

The movie was infinitely better in being a show rather than a bad slapstick comedy that tries to insert occasional moments of seriousness, its biggest failing might well be the lack of time to explain the gap between the series and the movie. Honestly, all the things I read of that gap was far, far, far more interesting than the series itself. These folks set out on a serious mission, and everything about the nature of the mission and the theme that the show focuses on was serious, but they wanted to establish that amidst of all that, it is possible to have a lighthearted normal life for the crew. In fact, the director of the anime mentioned that they wanted to do everything and simply ran out of time, and that if they had the chance to do it again, they would have taken a much different path. So yeah, the series itself, other than the few episodes that does deal directly with what the focus should have been, boiled down to Ruri being awesome and me loving her bakabaka.
FMP was anything but a light hearted mech anime when you get down to the second season and most of season, at that, we had the discussion like a hundred or so pages back about how season 1 and 2 differed and covered briefly how things are. You really shouldn't count Fumoffu, as the purpose of that particular season was solely to bring in the entertaining material from the short stories.
|
I agree about The Second Raid, as that was really dark and bloody, but the first season had plenty of light hearted stuff, which was mostly the school stuff. And I'm not sure why I shouldn't count Fumoffu, since that is also Full Metal Panic, side stories or not.
And I guess I just have to disagree with you about there only being a few good episodes in the series itself. The first part of the show was definitely the best part of it, and later on it wasn't as good, but again, I don't think that makes it bad.
|
Well, Fumoffu is treated as an extension of the series devoted solely to comedy and all of the comedic events but like, 2 or 3 are in fact taken from the short stories. To me, that indicates pretty strongly that the author wanted to keep a degree of separation between the main story events and the daily life of Sousuke. While the latter is highly relevant in how they shape him, the comedic nature of it simply means that it clashed strongly with the general theme of the long stories. We actually end up taking a lot of things for granted about the nature of Sousuke's school life if we just follow the long stories.
The first part of the show? Really? All the points where we'd just have things randomly accomplished amidst the 3 female pilot's weird bantering, Tenkawa hurled off into the deepness of space and recovered magically, and Ruri wrapping it all up by remarking how everyone is stupid? I mean the last part is awesome, but when you put all that in contrast to the nature of their mission, the way they had to exit earth and all the conflicts up to the discovery of the Nergal research facility and leaving Mars the first time...I am sorry, it simply didn't blend. With FMP the way they allocated time and paced the whole comedic school events turned out to be much easier to follow, not so here. The later episodes in Nadesico where they'd devote entire episodes solely to what they are doing, even if it is as random as a Miss Con, was by far more consistent and handled in a way that didn't leave you with a sense of bewilderment.

You can't tell me that Daigogi Gai didn't make the first part of the series completely awesome. IMO the show would have been about 10x as good if they didn't randomly kill him off, but at least he had his effect on Akito. The show did have problems blending the serious parts of it with the comedy parts, but if you just don't take the show really seriously, you can enjoy it alot more IMO. Thats why I classify it as a light-hearted mech show.
And on the complete opposite end of the Mecha spectrum, I've started watching Blue Gender. The show reminds me alot of Votoms, and I'm liking it so far. Its like Votoms having an entertaining Mech TvZ.

I thought he made it pretty retarded, was glad when he turned out to be a plot device to get sac'd early. The show only got as good as it could because they killed him off (lol I am just looking at your post, stating the exact opposite and pretty much hitting my opinion 100%). When I watched it the first time back it...um...early high school, I think, I thought it made a decent lighthearted show, with Ruri saving the day. But as I got exposed to more of the materials I really felt like the lightheartedness was really meant to be the contrast we were suppose to have. The way transitions between segments are so rough and the directer's thoughts about wanting to do more, to me, really suggested that they wanted a much larger project that they would be able to fully flesh out both the serious and lighthearted parts for. Given the direction it started and ultimately took, the latter can't possibly be the case...at least I have no way to convince myself that it is supposed to be lighthearted.

You didn't like Gai? Something tells me you aren't a big fan of Super Robot shows.
|
He was meant to be a parody of those though, Nadesico is very far from a Super Robot show. In that context I'd like Gai better.

Air's ending was confusing as hell. I really don't know what happened in those last few episodes. + Show Spoiler +So if I understand this right, Yukito died because of the curse and then somehow came back as the crow? And were those kids at the end supposed to be reincarnations of Yukito and Misuzu?
Pretty odd ending.
Kizumonogatari anime confirmed!

Anyone watched Darker Than Black Gaiden 4? The whole thing left me more confused than before I watched it...

Sex hair time.
Well, Moyashimon live action is wackier than the anime. The microbes are even more awesome, with the combination to form a giant voltron microbe. Kei is showing up next episode, though. It can either be the best thing since sliced bread or the most traumatizing experience. Judging by the OP, it's probably the latter.
Edit: First Break Blade movie subbed!

I'm a huge fan of Ghost In The Shell (movie and series), Ninja Scroll and Akira. Any advice on what anime to check out? (I hate bleach / naruto type manga)..

Just finished School Days.....I don't know if I would EVER want to date again.....
|
so I was watching K-On ep17 and it kinda hit me (im rather slow with stuff like that) I know there are like millions of strains of cold and flu, but are the ones depicted in anime/manga actually legit?
I mean all my colds are like, pretty weak and last well over 2 weeks just sneezing, coughing and having headaches whereas they always seem to be completely useless for 1-2 days then they're perfectly fine. I've never went to Japan (let alone Asia) so I was wondering if it was that dramatic or just enhanced for good purposes
also,lol Xiphos .

I don't watch K-On, but from the sound of it, it's another sick episode. It's really as cliche and as unimaginative as possible, and one of which I would like to see die out altogether. Unless, of course, I missed the memo that everyone in Asia are suddenly infected with autoimmune disease.
