Hey, I am not a huge anime fan but wondering a good anime to get into; genres -> (horror+thriller) or (some nice action packed one). Most of the animes I start to watch really don't cut it as I am not easily amused (the plot lines are too pedestrian).
References: I liked Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, 7Samurai and most of Rurouni Kenshin
Do not recommend most of these common popular animes (the ones mentioned in OP) along with one piece, etc because I find most of the plots develop much too slowly.

I'm bored so I'm gonna explain Total Eclipse's setting here. The anime will surely explain the setting as well, but the question is just how much? Probably not as in-dept as Muv-Luv Unlimited. Which is probably fine, to get the general gist of whats going on. However, the setting in MLA is IMO one of the best things about it, and if you like things like history and maps in your Fiction, maybe you will enjoy it more after reading this.
So here it goes, includes screenshots from the games to aid explination: + Show Spoiler +
-1945: WW2 ends. However, Germany was the one nuked, not Japan. Japan still surrenders, but comes out of the deal better than they did in our world. Japan's government is very different from our world's. They still have the Emperor, but the head-of-state is the Japanese Shogun. So they are still very "Japanese Empire-like". As such, they still have an actual military, and develop their own weapons. The Japanese are much more nationalistic in this world.
Kyoto was the capitol of Japan, although it changed to Tokyo due to BETA. America still kept a big presence in Japan, similarly to how they did in our world.
-1956: The American Space Station 'Hope 2' is built in Orbit, and this facilitates the construction of more space-born assets.
-1958: America launches the Viking 1 probe towards Mars. The Probe landed, took samples, and a picture. The Picture caught a glimpse of an Alien life form on the surface. Soon they lost contact with the probe.
This sent a frenzy through the scientific world, wanting to know whats up. Eventually it was found out that they inhabited the entire surface of Mars, and for a time it was believed they were native Martians. However...
-1967: A Geological survey team from the permanent international moon base discovered similar life forms on the Moon. Then they lost contact with them. After this first contact, war with these aliens begin.
The aliens are called "BETA", which stands for "Beings of Extra Terrestrial origin and Adversary to the human race". And you gotta say that in really broken Engrish for it to sound like how they said it in the VN.
"The Moon was hell" apparently was a famous line from a general who fought up there. The War on the Moon soon would end, however, because...
-1973: The BETA land on Earth, in the suburbs of Kashgar, in China. As you can see, the Chinese and Soviets try to fight the BETA alone. They use tactical nukes, and every (then) modern weapon at their disposal. For the first two weeks of Hostilities, the Chinese' aerial operations against the BETA are extremely effective. The BETA had no flying weapons of their own.
However, after 2 weeks, this all stopped. The BETA deployed two new species, referred to as "Laser Class".
Even the smaller of the two Laser Class BETA can accurately track flying objects at a height of 10,000 meters from 380km away, and will shoot down anything within a 30km radius. The bigger ones can do even better. The existence of Laser Class ends the era of Jets and Planes being Humanity's best weapons in war.
By the time Muv-Luv Alternative comes around, China no longer exists.
-1974: A new BETA Landing happened, this time in Canada.
The United States gives zero fucks about this, and nukes the thing to oblivion right when it lands. The good news is they took out the hive! The other good news is they killed Canada too!
After analyzing the data from fighting the BETA on the Moon, and the fighting in Asia, it became clear that Humanity would have to re-think its way they fought war. In response to the BETA, America developed what is called a "Tactical Surface Fighter". These are the giant robots in the series. Almost ALL of the TSFs in Muv-Luv are based on real-world aircraft. The first one introduced was the F-4 Phantom. By the time Alternative roles around, different variations of the F-4 are still common, but there are other TSFs like the F-15 Eagle, F-22 Raptor, various Migs, and Japanese TSFs (which are original, since Japan doesn't produce its own aircraft in our world).
Operations against the BETA would consist of huge, combined arms operations against the BETA. The following is how a generic operation would work: + Show Spoiler +
So basically, they start off with massive shelling, either from a nearby fleet of Battleships, or shelling from Orbit. Then Tanks and TSFs enter the battlefield, supported by Gunships, whose purpose is to hunt down and kill the Laser Class. The only time when Humanity has an edge on the BETA is when they have Air Superiority. After the Laser Class are brought down, this allows air support to come in, and take control of the surface of a Hive. Afterwards, its the jobs of TSFs to go into the Hive, and destroy its Core. Tanks and other units are unsuitable for doing so, because inside a Hive, BETA will literally come at you from every single direction, in front, behind, above, and below.
-1978: In the European Theatre, the European Armies launched Operation Palaiologos, which was a huge Operation to stop the advance of the BETA across Eastern Europe. However, it was a massive failure, and Poland would fall to the BETA one year later.
After which, the "Oder-Neisse Absolute Defence Line" was constructed across East Germany. Was essentially a massive line of defensive fortifications. As of 1983, the Defense Line stood strong, but the increasing strength of BETA attacks, combined with the decreasing strength of Humanity, eventually causes the defense line to collapse.
-1998: Japan was invaded by BETA. By this point in time, 60% of the Worlds Population is dead. The entire world's population is just over 1 Billion. With the invasion of Japan, the US pulls out of Japan, and leaves the Japanese to their fate. Kyoto falls, and Tokyo is made the new capitol.
Australia is revealed to be safe and untouched by the war, and was accepting refugees. The Soviet Union was pretty much fucked, but the Americans let them have part of Alaska, so they could continue the fight in Siberia.
-1999: America comes back, and with other Asian troops, being an operation to take back the Japanese Mainland. By this time, there were two Hives in Japan, one at Sadogashima, and one at Yokohama. The Americans drop two experimental bombs on the Hive, known as "G-Bombs". Due to this, Humanity captured the first hive it has ever captured.
-2001: "Present", when Alternative and Total Eclipse takes place. While Unlimited and Alternative take place in Japan, at a UN Army base, Total Eclipse takes place in Alaska, at a base where they are testing new TSF models. Total Eclipse is often called the "Top Gun" of the series.
Is the first season supposed to end at episode 25? Ended with two main guys pointing guns at eachother... Anyway, this series turned pretty boring, especially after been so spoiled with Fate Zero season 2
No, its a new Slice of Life Moe romantic comedy show.
Also, Geass Season 1 ends at episode 25.

You forgot one thing: this is the soundtrack playing in the background while you absorb all that information :D
Pretty sure I saw a few Destroyer class mixed in as well. Though I thought they were supposed to be a bit larger than the Grapplers? (Also, fail at microing, Destroyers walking *behind* the Grapplers? Noob BETA)

Pretty sure I saw a few Destroyer class mixed in as well. Though I thought they were supposed to be a bit larger than the Grapplers? (Also, fail at microing, Destroyers walking *behind* the Grapplers? Noob BETA)

Yay welcome back to the VN world Just make sure you're aware that there's actually 3 parts in order: Muv-Luv (Muv-Luv Extra -> Muv-Luv Unlimited) Muv-Luv Alternative

Destroyers and Grapplers are roughly the same size, just different builds. Although yeah, Destroyer Classes are supposed to be up front. Although, in Schwarzenmarken, Destroyer class NOT being in the front completely mindgamed the squadron in that LN, and made them shit their pants.

Just be aware that Muv-Luv Extra, the first part of the series, does NOT take place in that world. That VN was advertised as a "Super Generic Romantic Comedy" when it came out. And it is. Then you beat two routes, the title screen changes, and you start Muv-Luv Unlimited, and get smacked upside the head with a complete genre shift.
This reminds me, Kouki Yoshimune, writer of MLA:TE iirc, will be at AX. Sentenal, is there anything you would want me to ask him if I got lucky enough to do so?

IIRC the guy said something about "out-doing Zambot 3" with its ending. So ask him what he meant by that/if that means he wants to kill everyone!

Will do. Does that mean the MLA:TE story isn't over? I was under the impression the anime is just going to be based on the LN and those who can read it already know the ending.

The LN ended on a cliffhanger, to the best of my knowledge.

References: I liked Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, 7Samurai and most of Rurouni Kenshin
Do not recommend most of these common popular animes (the ones mentioned in OP) along with one piece, etc because I find most of the plots develop much too slowly.
edit: yeah I saw this chart, but I was asking which specifically since I gave some I like/don't like also I am not into naruto, it was okay at first but they sort of deviated a ton from the original plot and got side tracked (and I know that mangas>>anime, so I am wondering which animes are at least close to the mangas)

Mirai Nikki.
