On December 06 2009 07:32 triangle wrote: I actually think there are several tone shifts in the show + Show Spoiler + First 5 episodes are where Rakka thinks of Glei as a utopia, and the show is like a more mysterious version of Aria or something. Then episode 6 is a total shock, where Rakka is first exposed to the darkness lurking beneath the surface of the show, we see Reki's inner turmoil for the first time, etc. A total shift towards extreme darkness that continues up until episode 9 when Rakka escapes the circle of sin. Then the story finally moves to Reki, the "actual" main character (imo) and her struggles, which covers the rest of the plot. One of my favorite things about Haibane Renmei is how it's dark, but the darkness is subtle and hidden. The theory I personally subscribe to regarding the identity of the haibane is that they are the souls of children in purgatory who have committed suicide. The cocoon dream reflects their last memories before death (Rakka kills herself by jumping down a well, Reki steps in front of a train, Kana drowns herself, Nemu takes sleeping pills, etc.). The haibane go on to heaven once they have accepted their own identities and embrace life. I agree about the art unfortunately... there are some scenes where the art is just bad. At least the sensational soundtrack makes up for it. As for original anime series... I just finished Eden of the East (well, the non- movie part anyway) and have mixed feelings. On the one hand, the art is SPECTACULAR, but the characters are weirdly uninteresting (at least for me), the plot is unnecessarily confused and odd in general, and the show just seemed... off. I dunno, it just came across as a huge waste of some sensational production values. And what was with the obsession with naked men and penises? That show must have set some record for non-hentai male nudity. Edit - FOR WHOEVER HADN'T WATCHED HARUHI WATCH IT NOW OMG. I stick by my previous statement that there is one primary tone shift in the series, but I'll move the marker back to about half way through the show because I went back and double checked what happened in each episode (I thought the one regarding Kuu was later on for some reason). Here's my reasoning: + Show Spoiler + For me, the only tone shift happens at the end of episode 6/beginning of episode 7. Yes there's a separation between the Rakka and Reki story arcs, but there's no separation in the overall tone guiding both of them - that of despair and finally salvation. Now as for some analysis or speculation about the nature of the Haibane: + Show Spoiler + I think the darkness is definitely not hidden, especially by the end of the show. Episodes 1-5 are definitely light and fluffy, and you don't get the sense that anything is wrong - You're still trying to get your bearings in this new world. By episode 6 though, you know something is wrong. As for your suicide theory, I don't think it properly fits with some other elements in the show. For example, I honestly can't think of a way you can figure out how Kuu died (floating in the air?) or Hikari (surrounded by light?), not to mention the countless number of children in the story (how would they have killed themselves?). Not only that, but look at the other people that we know of. Hyohko (ice lake) could be construed to drowning in the winter or something like that, but Midori (greenery) and Kuramori (dark forest) are hard to guess. Oh by the way, for Rakka, I think falling from a cliff or something for that would be more appropriate because she wasn't surrounded by darkness. In any case, I think that Glie is basically purgatory. However, it's not the Catholic purgatory. It's where one where those who have not ultimately understood life go. I can't really phrase it well, but think of it as a commentary on the human condition. The reason why you see primarily children as Haibane is because they are completely innocent and have not experienced the life they should have experienced (remember that the forms the Haibane take may not be the ones they had in their human life. An example would be that other Reki in a white dress at the end). Notice how Haibanes are supposed to live in Glie. They are to work, but not for money, but the right to live as they want. They do not work for material possessions, but rather for life experience. The cocoons serve as the means through which they are reborn from the end of their human lives to their Haibane lives. The dreams are a representation of their final moments in life. Not necessarily from suicide, but from natural death. It's still hard to find an EXACT death to match each one, but that's a minor point of the anime. The major point is to emphasize what Abe thinks is important to human nature - understanding, compassion, and friendship. Those who have lost their way or have completely denied human connection become Sin-Bound. Reki stays a Sin-Bound because she rejects help from other Haibane, and Rakka rejects the world around her and its compassion towards her. And her actions in the previous life (rejecting human compassion and quite possibly killing herself) caused her to be born a Sin-Bound. I could go on about the intricacies and analysis of multiple elements of the show, but then my post would turn rather long, so I'll leave it at that. And I agree about the beauty of the soundtrack. Absolutely gorgeous. I've already watched Eden of the East. Definitely an interesting show. I'm certain that there are many more religious allusions there than the obvious, but I'm just not a Bible reader so I'm probably missing a lot. The opening is really interesting though. I did learn what a NEET is though, so good for me on that ![]()

Starts at 8:11, I first thought it was 4 Strings' Take Me Away into the Night, but it's not and not a remix of that song.

Towards the end, I was actually beginning to like Ryou more. The first thing that came to my mind when I started dating Ryou was "Oh shit", I even mentioned it in this thread. I was wondering when I would be able to break up with Ryou and when the time came, I felt pretty happy but why break up with her at the moment when she becomes functional? I must say, I am beginning to feel like an otaku playing this game. Even though this is the only bishojo game I have played and I have only watched about 30 anime series over a span of 6 years, Clannad is not a game I would want to bring up in a conversation.

I never understood why people want him to be alive. In his position, it is much better to be dead than alive. Thematically, it makes little sense to keep him alive either. So why insist that he is the one driving the carriage when we've had interviews saying that he is dead? As for bishoujo game and otaku...well, eh. We don't see people looking like they should be ashamed because they read Twilight. Content and writing wise these games beat your typical romance novels more often than not. So if that's mainstream, then I see little issue in being called an otaku for enjoying these games. With Ryou and Kyou, the main thing is that Ryou became functional by being more like Kyou, and Tomoya for the most part sees her as a substitute for Kyou. From our standpoint as the reader, that's fairly twisted. Since Key protagonists tend to be given enough introspection to consider those things... Rakkyo needs to download faster, and ship faster, mostly the latter, except it doesn't matter with me anyway since I have to wait for the bakemonogatari preorders to release before shipping comes along.
