Also, always looking for more Sci-Fi to watch. I don't mind "action oriented sci-fi", say like Star Trek (the new ones), but it doesn't feel sci-fi at all. More like action movie featuring cool devices
Visually, I'm always fascinated with Zhang Yimou's movies. Just watch Hero, even if you don't like wuxia.
Visually, the Fountain was amazing for me. All those cool macro FX and very little CGI:
edit: slight spoilers (very very slight)
the soundtrack is amazing as well, performed by Mogwai and Clint Mansell

It's helpful to give a brief description of why you thought the movie was good or bad, but a numerical rating? Your score means nothing without knowing your history of ratings. Maybe you thought Shawshank Redemption was 1/10, or Back to the Future 3 was 10/10. Your ratings add zero weight to your argument.
Having said that, my friends and I have found many gems through this thread. Thanks to everyone who posts!
Yeah I totally agree. I don't rate movies at all. It's completely useless IMO.
Plot is thin and seen countless times but even then it's an amazing action movie, the kind that rivet you on your chair with some jaw dropping action scenes (the final O_O). While the plot isn't great, it stays simple, driven and with a clear goal and doesn't throw too much extra bullshit at you. It's engaging, the action is top level (it's more knives and knuckles than guns). It has some really graphic scenes so I obviously wouldn't recommend if you dislike violence, blood and knife cuts.
Obviously do not bother if you're looking for an original story or want absolute realism in your movies. You would hate that one. But if you want to see a badass kicks some guys ass (and really want to see these guys killed) without a second thought, korean style, this is it. Movie might also have a bit too much *splish* *splash* blood sound effects that are a bit stupid -.-
PS: Watched subbed, can't say how dubbed looks like.
Edit: Also saw "This is the end", a few laughs but it mostly sucks and quickly becomes annoying. Might be better under the influence.
@Spekulatius I've seen a handful. Liked "Sympathy M. Vengeance", "The Chaser", "My Sassy Girl", and "I Saw the Devil" despite some flaws with its logic, have mixed feelings about "Oldboy" (Some good scenes but too weird for me) and "The Yellow Sea" (too slow of a first half and too big a contrast with the second half) and really disliked "Memories of Murder" (bored out of my mind).
Going to watch War of the Arrows, Bittersweet Life and Brotherhood of War (when I have time).

Any recommendation ?
Weird that you didn't like Memories of Murder. That was my absolute favorite (besides Oldboy). Well, that makes my list of recommendations for you a lot shorter then.
Based on the movies you referred to, I would say you could like A Bittersweet Life (might be starting off too quiet for your taste though). But first and foremost, I would definitely recommend you check out The Host and Thirst. Many people I spoke to loved The Good, The Bad And The Weird too, which I have mixed feelings about, but it's the most "fun" of all the movies we've listed so far (not counting My Sassy Girl).
Haven't seen Brotherhood Of War yet. I'm not a big fan of War movies.
I saw Serenity (2005) this weekend http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/?ref_=sr_1 Just wow. Such a gem of a movie. This movie is not deep and serious, its more of a feel good movie with awesome characters of all sorts. Often I am surprised at the lines they serve me, and it makes me smile and laugh and cheer on them all. I have not seen anything like this that I can remember. And the theme is more like Star trek and western style.
I absolutely recommend seeing the TV-show first, which is 14 episodes on netflix. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/?ref_=sr_1 The movie will more or less start where the show let go. The show was cancelled by FOX, but they made this badass funny movie after to close things up, and they did.
It's hard to grade this movie, cause it didn't really move me to tears or anything, but heck, I'll give it 9/10, but it felt like a 10/10. PS: The females in this movie (and show) are all really great, which is real rare these days.

He already linked to the series buddy which imo is the exact same style lol. Nevertheless an awesome series and film definitely worth watching.
A few gems that I've watched recently: Dazed and Confused is a great watch of a coming of age story. Pretty much anyone who has been through school can relate to at least one of the characters in this film - even if your not from the US (which I'm not). A very human and candid illustration of the challanges faced moving forward in life, whether a senior of freshmen. [9/10] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106677/?ref_=sr_1 Also if you liked that you will probably like almost anything done by Richard Linklater - the Before trilogy being one of my all time favorites.
50/50 A very emotional journey of a young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) battling with cancer. One of the few movies that really moved me, especially because not many 'sad' movies are from the perspective of a 20 something guy (which is a demographic a lot of TL'ers probably fall into). Don't be fooled by the fact it has Seth Rogan in it, not that that takes anything away from the film. The carefully handled mix of humor and emotion is really well balanced in this I believe. Also the scene where Gordon-Levitt shaves his head... That's really him shaving his head, no bald cap here. They had to do it in one take (since he only has one head to shave) which makes the look on Seth Rogan's face all the more believable! [8/10] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1306980/?ref_=sr_2
Saw Hawking the other night, great little documentary about a truly fascinating life. I suppose maybe as a physics grad I found it more interesting than some but my girlfriend loved it too without the science background.
It's mainly about him as a person and his life rather than the physics, although that is obviously mentioned as its hard to separate the man from his work. Very inspirational and touching.

Saw this last week on Netflix. Very accurate description, and a fun movie for sure. Now I want to rewatch Old Boy..
rounders (1998) matt damon and ed norton playing texas holdem. not bad at all. nothing special, but a solid movie. i wish they would have elaborated more on the poker gameplay though. that would've been interesting. had to go and look them up myself lol. 7.5/10
se7en (1995) brad pitt and morgan freeman in a classic crime thriller. kinda embarrassed that i only saw it just a few days ago, and it was really good. dark and gritty. 8.7/10
moneyball (2011) brad pitt and jonah hill use stats to determine the best baseball players you can get with a limited budget. would have loved more stats and less drama lol. pretty good, i enjoyed this one.\ 8.0/10
the expendables (2010) i went in here expecting nothing but cool action. i didn't care about the story, i just wanted to watch action, explosions, gunfights, martial arts, and general badassery. unfortunately this movie couldn't even give me that. i also don't like stallone in this film. 4.0/10
a few good men (1992) another movie that i should've seen a long while ago, but just got to it this past week. excellent courtroom drama, and of course, jack nicholson gives us one of the most memorable lines in recent cinema. 8.2/10
the iceman (2012) biographical crime film about hitman kuklinski. didn't enjoy it very much. couldn't get myself engaged in the story, probably cuz the main character pissed me off. 5.0/10
animal kingdom (2010) young kid gets involved with his family of criminals, while a cop tries to bring him out of it. very mediocre imo. i just can't seem to enjoy movies with characters that i dislike. not my cup of tea, but the movie's got a lot of great reviews, so you might wanna check it out just cuz. 6.6/10
lord of war (2005) i can't take nicolas cage seriously. his narration throughout the entire movie just sounded plain dumb. story was ok. the ending was kind of cool, and i wasn't expecting it. thank you for smoking is way better. 6.4/10
the place beyond the pines (2012) this was the first film i've seen with ryan gosling, and i hated him, and felt sorry for his ex and her bf cuz gosling was such a dick. maybe i'm judging his character more than gosling himself, but whatever. maybe i'll like him in some of his other films. the last half of the movie was a lot more interesting than the first, but in the end, it's not that memorable to me. 6.9/10
training day (2001) denzel washington and ethan hawke in a police crime thriller. decent overall. i enjoyed both of the lead actors' performances. not much else to say i guess. 7.5/10
eastern promises (2007) woman in london gets involved with the local russian mafia. took me until the end of the movie to realize the mafia driver was viggo lol. kept thinking "where have i seen him before??" i enjoyed it. 7.9/10
the east (2013) interesting premise: woman who works for a private corporate intelligence firm is infiltrates the operations of an environmental terrorist group. besides this, the rest of the story is only soso. some parts are just unrealistic. liked the ending though. + Show Spoiler +
i'm glad it had a "happy" ending though. her character changed and through her experience learned that extreme radical action is not the way. instead, she uses uses the media to draw attention to the problems she sees, and they are solved through the legal system.

mah nigga.
haha and great quotes too king kong aint got shit on me!
Scott Pilgrim vs. the world Holy batman a qwerky movie. It's Micheal Cera playing a dorky early twenties guy who fins a new girlfriend. In order to date her he have to defeat her 7 evil ex's. Somehow I liked i. It was a bit like kickass in some sense that it over did classic movie tricks while also taking the piss on a genre. For example, at one point he have to leave his house in order to fight some ex. The movie then makes loud noises, action sounds and fast cuts. But when he have to ties his shoes it's classical music and really slow paced just to pick up when he puts on his jacket.
tried to watch it with my gf but she gave up. So this might not be the best movie for everyone but I enjoyed it.
Was ok. In essence it's more of a Catastrophe Movie than a Zombie Movie. So if you get in expecting Land of the Dead or the like, forget it you'll be disappointed. Movie is a lot closer to things like The Day After Tomorrow, but with Zombies. (It's better though). It uses the same patterns as those kind of movies: starts quick, shit hit the fan, people start running to survive, big special effects of cities being destroyed (or overwhelmed in that case), few survivors tries to find a solution.
It's not gory, there's some but apart from an amputation scene, it's limited.
So yeah expect a classical Catastrophe movie and you may enjoy it expect a survival horror movie and you will probably hate it.
Iron man 3 - The worst super hero movie /10. Cheese, bad action, bad story telling. At least they had 10/10 trailer !
Grown ups 2 - DO NOT WATCH IT/10
Hobbit - 8,8/10 Beautiful. Acting, story, right amount of humor and you can really feel the world. I think it was a great idea to make it 3 part movie.
Now you see me - 6/10 I dont buy that twist. Maybe you should have let Morgan freeman explain it to me. Just like in South Park.

La Nuit et Brouillard is an interesting documentary and one of the first about the Holocaust to come out in Europe when it was released in 1955. It is an amazingly well put together and somber take on what happened in concentration camps during WWII.
In a similar vein, though not a movie is an episode of the Twilight Zone called, Death's Head Revisited, which is an episode or vignette about an SS officer who enjoyed his work returning to Dachau to relive his, "glory days." Both are very much ahead of their times considering the near complete lack of dialog about the camps in the media, the Twilight Zone episode especially is fantastically cerebral.
