I think Sunshine is pretty brilliant if you've not seen it. Cillian Murphey tries to restart the sun with crew. It kind of went under the radar in the states but I loved it.

Really hard to answer obviously, but a movie that immediately comes to mind for the first is The Fall by Tarsem Singh. The Fountain by Darren Aronofsky is also very interesting both visually and musically (Clint Mansell), but don't expect a mainstream film.
For sci-fi I recommend Pandorum 'cause I think it's pretty unknown but awesome.

For visuals you should go with Aronofsky (The Fountain, Pi) and Refn (Valhalla Rising, Drive, Only God Forgives) - be forewarned though that all those movies are rather indie/artsy and not for everyone. For the music the obvious choice would be Star Wars because Williams is a god but I guess you're looking for something a bit different. Again Pi and The Fountain would be great choices (Mansell is a god too).
Or, you could go for the best movie ever, with best visuals and music - Ridley Scott's Blade Runner with music by Vangelis.

One of the most visually amazing movies I can think of is "Tokyo Drifter" by Seijun Suzuki. It's full of references to other movies/directors and very much over the top but enjoyable nonetheless.
Oh and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" by Terry Gilliam is a movie with stunning visuals. Maybe not the best movie ever but Gilliam (known for Monty Python's Holy Grail and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for example) has a very distinctive style.

Sunshine is one of the very few movies I really didn't like simply because all the science behind it was so asinine and wrong. It was a pretty good movie but I just couldnt look passed the whole concept.

Visually it was indeed pretty cool though.
Not quite "The Core" class movie, in terms of Science but I enjoy it mainly because of the visuals/drama. Nuking the sun, is obsiously a ludicris idea.
After all this time watching movies this was actually my first Clara Bow film (And on the big screen!). And boy can she act! I was worried in the beginning as the story is a little cliche and the actors were wooden, but everything changes when she shows up about 10 minutes in. Her naturalism and energy is so infectious. Even better the story becomes subversive and instead of her sexuality being exploited in a chauvinistic fantasy like most pictures at this time, she is in control and has no comeuppance for her flirtatiousness. Ultimately it's just fun to watch Clara Bow work especially with great lines like "If you could fish as well as you can crab, there’d be many an empty lake up here.” Cannot help but smile

Sun dying out? Nukes! Asteroid coming to earth? Nukes! Earth dying? That's right, lets nuke the core!

Visually, I'm always fascinated with Zhang Yimou's movies. Just watch Hero, even if you don't like wuxia.
The one thing I never understood in this thread is why people choose to rate the movies they've seen. It's helpful to give a brief description of why you thought the movie was good or bad, but a numerical rating? Your score means nothing without knowing your history of ratings. Maybe you thought Shawshank Redemption was 1/10, or Back to the Future 3 was 10/10. Your ratings add zero weight to your argument.
Having said that, my friends and I have found many gems through this thread. Thanks to everyone who posts!
On August 25 2011 17:35 Pangolin wrote: Wild Strawberries (Ingmar Bergman): A very heartfelt film about an old man who is jovial on the outside but cold and hard on the inside. Through the course of a single day, he realizes (perhaps too late) the mistakes that he has made in his life, and how it has affected his family. The film resonated with me as the main character reminded me of my own grandfather.
Alphaville (Jean Luc Godard): A sci-fi noir where a hard-boiled secret agent infiltrates a society run by a computer which cares only about logic. Citizens who show excessive emotion are re-educated or executed.
I was very interested to see what Godard would do with a sci-fi setting, but was not as impressed as I'd hoped. There were some good poetic moments, but the film lacked any real suspense or action, which are things I want in a setting/genre like this. Also, the ultimate conclusion that love conquers all is somewhat trite, despite being well executed. Worth watching but definitely not my favorite of Godard's films.
My Night At Maud's (Eric Rohmer): An intriguing look at the life and decisions of a young catholic man in France. It centers around the titular night spent at a woman(Maud)'s house, where the protagonist, his old friend, and Maud spend a good deal of time discussing their varying philosophies and moralities. The main character has his morality tested when his old friend leaves the him alone to spend the night with Maud.
I enjoyed the film a lot, because I am a fan of films where dialog is the focal point. In the end, I was left with a lingering sense of regret as the main character's old fashioned values (which are very different from my own) lead him down a totally different path from what I had hoped. Having a film affect me like that is a good thing. In this case, it made me evaluate what it is that guides us in the decisions we make in our lives.
For instance, this to me is a perfect example of the ideal post. Especially in contrast to someone who merely posts a pic of the movie with the caption. "8/10. Great flick."
