He had this big magical world full of actors with their own stories, backgrounds and agendas and he wanted to tell us all about all of them. But the world doesn’t naturally have narratives, reality doesn’t have all the stories come together for that perfect climactic moment. It’s meandering and inconsistent and often meaningless, which is a problem for an author. GRRM literally lost the plot. He’s stuck with the Sons of the Harpy and the Dornish Master Plan and the Mummers Prince and the Blackfyres and the Maester’s Plot and the Free Companies and the Red Priests and the Faceless Men and the Faith Militant and the ancient prophecies and Vary’s schemes and the slaver cities and Illyrio and Victarion and the dragon horn and Stoneheart and Wolf Dreams and so on and so on forever. It’s all very interesting, but it isn’t a story. He stopped because what else can he do at this point? How can all of that come together? I didn’t even mention any of the actual Game of Thrones stuff there, that’s all side stuff. I agree a lot with this. Just a note that I haven't completed A Feast for Crows partly because damn, it was so difficult to read even half of it. While I do think that some of the side plots can be weaved back into the main story easily, I just don't understand why he needed to make the story so complicated, mostly throughout books 4 and 5. For example, on something I can imagine might not be hard to consolidate: + Show Spoiler + I think Victarion Greyjoy's purpose from a plot perspective easily could just be to ensure Daenerys has enough ships she needs to invade Westeros Lady Stoneheart? Dorne? (f)Aegon? I think these are weaknesses in the books that carried over to the show or would have had they been included; some I think are easier to resolve and more interesting than others. I hope we'll eventually get some book conclusions but at this rate I think we never will.

I feel like the only possible purpose for R+L = J at this point (especially when, besides Jon, only Bran and Sam are actually convinced of it) is for D&D to pull some contract breaking shit out of their asses with the Golden Company and get them to defect for the "true king" or whatever. However they haven't talked much about the Golden Company at all in the show so it's almost just like some sort of bolster for the video game boss fight that is Cersei vs the world.

He's spent 8 seasons fighting against this threat that's greater than everyone (part of the reason he went and bent the knee to Dany) and now we're just supposed to expect that he'll be down to go chase after the throne? The only aspect of that which would make any sense is to kill Cersei for betraying humanity, but why have R+L=J and all this other nonsense if we have that kind of anticlimax? This is my biggest problem with Arya killing NK last night. Jon as a character was just ruined.

Yeah but now his goal is achieved. Unless they setting up Jon v Dany since he starting to see how power hungry she is. From her perspective "cool. I did my duty. Now for my reward". Jon v Dany is fine by me but idk if they can pull it off. I don't see Jon caring about the throne unless he sees Dany as a threat that needs to be removed. Beyind that it's a silly piece if drama to occur. They in love. Just marry and rule side by side. Easy peasy everyone wins.

1. Yeah wtf the dothraki charge into the night. Even with the fire buff which doubles damage vs. undead, that was a huge army to lose. Admittedly it makes for a great shot though, with all the lights going out. That flash frame where you see a giant just for a moment is pretty good. 2. All the unsullied in front of the trench. Could have trenches to funnel into unsullied for the concave, but nope. Backs to deadly spikes against an enemy that will just push you back. 3. Battles until the fire came up were just so dark. Couldn't make out a lot because of the darkness. 4. Lyanna Mormont died a heroes death for a child. 5. Arya with her weapon is a badass. Arya without decidedly less so. 6. Dragon scenes in the blizzard are super hard to make out. 7. Bran, wtf are you even doing? He's legit just a cripple bait in a chair. 8. Literally no major character dies, against unceasing waves of undead for pretty much an hour. 9. NK death is stupid, but it's an ending I guess. Side note: they go from a few hundred thousand dead bodies in varying states of decomposition in and around winterfell to cleaned up in a remarkable amount of time.

first 0-20-30 mins i was like 'use the dragons! use the dragons!' i felt like dany and john got baited and should have been flaming the shit out of everything rather than doing nothing for a good 30 minutes while the castle fell. i know they got swamped by a blizzard , but before that they were dicking around for 30 minutes

ugh, if she gets Cersei too I'm just going to lose it. I saw her doing it before the NK, but at this point Arya's just ridiculous now. Although at least that's a death that's a lot more plausible. It's probably going to happen too, I was calling it last season when she said she was on her way to kill the queen but instead took a trip to Winterfell --;

The trebuchets in front of the trenches is just a joke. But the worst thing are the Hollywood saves. About 80% of the heroes survive in a battle where everyone nearly dies every move. Jorah teleport and Arya teleport are on the level of one of those superhero movies of today (all of which are shit imo). And both aren’t even that hard to improve, just let Arya hide in a tree in advance and jump him, or use the face of a walker. It feels like if they had hired anyone who commented in this thread, it would have made more sense. The wights completely overrunning the castle and then playing Marco Polo in the library was also ridiculous. As was Jon knowing exactly which walls of the castle can’t be destroyed by ice dragon’s breath. Decent action episode, terrible for the story. Rip Prince that was promised.
