yeah it's weird. Rap God is good but Survival is on the album too and Berserk was merely average. I wrote off the album before but after Rap God came out I kinda have no clue how the album's gonna turn out.
I don't understand why people need something to be explained when a rapper is critically acclaimed, all of the album reviews explain it for you. Go on metacritic and you'll find lists of reviewers telling you why they like the album.
BET as an award show is the dumbest thing ever, but damn I enjoyed those cyphers.
Rittz, Jon Conner, A$AP Twelve and Rocky, pretty much all of slaughterhouse bar Joe Budden, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Kendrick all killed it imo.

Which point did he say that? Cause if he did that, he'd be a huge hypocrite after Recovery.
Yeah the way he puts it in is pretty much like we know him to say it. He says then couple of lines later he is on about how he needs to take it back to the 90s where hip hop was straight up etc. He doesn't dig at himself but he is constantly talking about taking it back old school which is marshall matters style (album wise) than the new stuff.
So I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer who has recently discovered that hip hop Ian far and away my favorite genre. I read through this whole thread and have picked up some new artists to listen to!!! Unfortunately I can only copy music from others as downloading is far too slow.
I'm gonna ramble about my history of hip hop and I'd like to hear how you guys got into it as well.
First album I ever bought was Big Willie Style. Will Smith introduced me to hip hop and I fucking love him for it.
After that I just had a large array of music from many genres (except country cause fuck that noise) and didn't pay much attention to music for a while. Mostly what I heard on the radio plus a Tupac greatest hits and an nwa greatest hits.
But since I've been in the Peace Corps, I listen to music much more frequently - and I quickly realized that hip hop is by far my favorite genre.
each of these songs (and artists) made me want to really explore the genre more.
My favorite artists (aside from the above, and in no particular order): Blue scholars, g-eazy, b.o.b., childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, kanye, moufy, mac miller, macklemore, j Cole, kid cudi, breezy lovejoy, yelawolf.
artists I really want to (and need to) listen to more: big krit, aceyalone, souls of mischief, nas, cunnilynguists, mos def, Jay-Z (older stuff), nwa, outkast (all members), and I'm sure I'm missing more.
album wise, Culdesac by childish Gambino, gkmc, station.80, and now mmlp (hype hype) have been taking so much of my attention.
I'm really surprised at the lack of kid cudi. I love all of his albums (although I want to listen to them more) and I thought indicud was on par with his other albums at the very least.
Wax (who i linked above), aceyalone, and breezy lovely I didn't see mentioned but they're worth checkin out: + Show Spoiler [aceyalone] +
You didn't say you'd listened to the GOAT (imo) Notorious BIG, so if you forgot to mention him shame on you, and if you haven't ever listened to him the next 2 albums you listen to should be Ready to Die and then Life After Death.
Also: Wu-Tang man. Listen to all 3 of these albums at the least: Enter the Wu-Tang (Wu-Tang Clan), Liquid Swords (GZA) and Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (Raekwon)
I have no idea how to describe what I don't like with a lot of this new hip-hop stuff... to me everything seems to be made with some grand club-pumping too-cool electronica/dub/pop craze or something.
There's plenty of modern hip hop with throwback production. We're never gonna have a full scale boom bap revival, and no matter how much you like the sound, thats a good thing, its much better for the genre to explore new ground then simply be an exercise in revivalism.
That being said, I don't like a lot modern production that I don't like, I'm not a fan of the spacey, cold feeling of trendy trap production, but to say everything is "club-pumping" is just ignorant.
We will never get back to the glory days of the 90s and even early 00s with Hip Hop and Rap, it's all been tailored around selling now. Jay Z and Kanye being prime examples, not many people like what they release nowadays in terms of true old school fans. New people though are liking the stuff they release, hell Drake is probably the most known rapper alongside Kanye and Jay Z at this moment in time. Just times are changing ;_;
I wish we could go back to the days of Biggie Tupac and Nas in prime. Such awesome times
The beauty of older rappers like that evolving is that theres always the new and hungry to take their place. And they can evolve and have their own creative license to try new things.
Danny Brown album is pretty good. I like pusha's more but that's a little hard to compare since Danny Brown is way more conceptual. I don't think it's XXX level but as a follow up, it's pretty damn consistent.
You want some shock rap? This is the closest you get to em level stuff in 2013 lol.

What.
The 2nd half of his career (in terms of solo albums) is by far less commercial then his first half.
EDIT: Also Biggie, Pac and Nas all have made music that is commercial and is made to sell. That doesn't mean its inherently bad music -_-
You can always find some underground stuff. The grime/rap underground in England is ok, well some of the stuff. There is this guy from Birmingham who is currently "killing" the UK scene at the moment. I however being from 20minute drive away from Birmingham cannot even understand the guy when he raps so i have no idea how is getting so much acclaim. See if you guys can understand him

No way not with all the social media bollocks there is in the world now. Free advertising everywhere. Hell even with downloading everyone knows 2 weeks before the album is out if it is any good lol. They all do these huge publicity stunts and shit trying get the money in. Go on every big radio show around the world and all that crap. It's not just about producing good music, putting it out there and hearing response. It's about getting the music out when your hot and when its the "right time"
Times have changed, Rap isn't just Rap now, its got to have something that more than just people who like Rap can relate too.
It's the style of the music though, Biggie Tupac Nas always kept to the same style, whether the lyrics where actually as good as previous songs can be the only difference. I for one have never disliked a single Nas Tupac and Biggie song, they have all been based on the same style which is why they are the greats.

Again, its really strange to pick Kanye out out of all people, his last album did basically none of the stuff your talking about.
And its not like this never happened before, there was promo for rap music then moment people started buying it.
