In keeping with the theme of tumultuous endings, the first time I finished Conrad's Heart of Darkness I was incredibly emo after having some girl issues and I cried like a baby.

"'His last word—to live with,' she murmured. 'Don't you understand I loved him—I loved him—I loved him!'

"I pulled myself together and spoke slowly.

"'The last word he pronounced was—your name.'

"I heard a light sigh, and then my heart stood still, stopped dead short by an exulting and terrible cry, by the cry of inconceivable triumph and of unspeakable pain. 'I knew it—I was sure!' . . . She knew. She was sure. I heard her weeping; she had hidden her face in her hands. It seemed to me that the house would collapse before I could escape, that the heavens would fall upon my head. But nothing happened. The heavens do not fall for such a trifle. Would they have fallen, I wonder, if I had rendered Kurtz that justice which was his due? Hadn't he said he wanted only justice? But I couldn't. I could not tell her. It would have been too dark—too dark altogether. . . ."

Marlow ceased, and sat apart, indistinct and silent, in the pose of a meditating Buddha. Nobody moved for a time. "We have lost the first of the ebb," said the Director, suddenly. I raised my head. The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed somber under an overcast sky—seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness.

Yes, I find Conrad really hit or miss. The Secret Agent, Heart of Darkness, and his three collaborations with Ford Madox Ford are the only works of his I'd truly recommend, though Lord Jim is one of those "par for the course" sort of books I suppose.

Yeah, I've tried to get into Conrad twice with different books but have been unable to keep at it. Other than, of course, "Heart of Darkness" which I read in school. I did read the short novel, "Nigger of the Narcissus", a couple of years back, and enjoyed that very much. I'll probably give Conrad another try soon, though. Sometimes, you just aren't ready for certain books, and then you just are (as I found with "The Mating Season", "Watership Down" and "Master and Commander"). Maybe "Secret Agent" would be a good place to start, or a second foray into "Heart of Darkness".

Endymion - Dan Simmons
A let down, after two of my favorite books of all time (Hyperion cantos). I didn't feel it for this one. More hocus pocus less sci-fi. Less of everything actually.. I hope he has something grand planned for the ending of this series as I will be reading that too.
And I gotta tell you, after all this dissapointing sci-fi reading (namely 1100 pages worth of Peter Hamilton) I'm starting to see Giorgio Tsoukalos face everytime I read the word architects.

"Rise of Endymion" is better than Endymion, not terrific mind you, but better.

Peter Hamilton : I'm assuming you're talking about rambling void?
Judas Unchained was decent, so ofc one would guess that the void series would be similar... but no.

Yes I have Rise of Endymion and will be reading that as well. The Hyperions were such good books that I don't terribly mind reading the continuation even if they don't add anything of significance.

The Hamilton one was actually "The reality dysfunction" of the nights dawn trilogy. Will probably continue with this one also since I have that book too and think it's unfair to the author not to let him tell his whole story. But I promise it won't be anytime soon.

I'm reading Quiet:

And it's quite an interesting book imo.

Just finished the birth of Rome by Anthony Everitt

It's a nice introductionary book to the Romans but it's too short to scratch more than just the surface of what happened in all that time. Every subject he touches upon probably deserves its own book.

I just finished The Trial by Franz Kafka and it is utterly brilliant.

I just started Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and I can see why so many people laud him as the greatest living author. His prose is simply fantastic.

This is a graphic novel, so if the very idea offends you then maybe skip it, but otherwise check this one out.

It's a relatively short but beautifully crafted piece about one mans torment and failure to escape both his and his countries past. The artwork is phenomenal and whilst you could criticize it for going a bit off the wall in the final few pages I think it's well worth the read.

One of my favourite short stories I've read in quite a while I think.

Found this ( as well as its sequel) at my local 2nd hand bookstore:

I watched the movie adaptation looong ago - I can't remember much other than that it was awesome, so I reckon I'll give this book a read before seeing the movie again

Funnily enough: it's translated by Patrick O'Brian (the author of the book I was actually going to the store to try and find), so this makes a good consolation prize I suppose :D

I started reading it this weekend and it is incredible. Unfortunately the translation I got was very poor so I decided to stop reading and order another one. Should be getting it by the end of the week, along with The Metamorphosis and The Castle.

Just finished this. Absolutely brilliant, even more impressive when you learn that Conrad was writing in his 3rd language.

Haven't made much more progress on Tolkein, and I haven't started Rand, yet.

Do you think Nostromo is any good?

also regarding the whole Hyperion thing, Rise of Endymion/Endymion, while fun to read and all, is definitely a massively step down from Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion =(
