yes it did have a similar feel to evangelion in that suddenly things could get fucked up and the jaeger is unexpectedly and abruptly smashed up and the pilots brutally killed

Please explain to me how "things being able to suddenly get fucked up and the pilots killed" is something Pacific Rim and Evangelion uniquely have in common, as apposed to things like Getter Robo, Godannar, Mazinger Z, or virtually any 'real robot' Mecha anime ever made? I read your post. "Evangelion is basically this movie but done perfectly", which is a false statement by someone who has probably only ever watched a hand-full of mecha anime, and therefore automatically associates "giant robots fighting monsters" with Evangelion, despite them having little in common beyond that.
And btw, in Evangelion, a pilot was never "brutally killed" in a similar fashion to what happened in Pacific Rim. Never. Not once.

Sure they both have giant robots, sudden alien invasions and characters that have to find it within themselves to repel said invasion. But the two aren't really alike at all. I feel like people that compare this movies with EVA haven't watched either enough Godzilla movies or other giant robot series to make a more appropriate comparison.
This movie wasn't trying to be EVA so of course if that is what you were looking for it to be, it will feel off.

the only relation between this movie and EVA is the fact that it makes me die for a live action eva even more.
dear god, where is my live action EVA ???

Although I guess they were mostly out of that fight after Leatherback's EMP.

And guys please stop hating on people that get reminded of Evangelion while watching this movie. For most people Evangelion was the first/only Anime that had this mecha theme. Its annoying as hell.

lol... oh the irony here... a pilot actually WAS killed in Evangelion. Multiple depending on the manga/alternative realities.

Again, you people seem to be associating "people getting killed" directly with Evagelion, specifically, for next to no reason. What death in EoE was like one in Pacific Rim? Eva-02 getting impaled by like 15 spears? When did that happen in Pacific Rim?

Great movie! The CGI was top notch and the fights were awesome. Sure, there were some points in the movie, especially early, whereas I had a hard time following the combat.
nein oudda den.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. Fights and robots were awesome but the writing was terrible and everything was 100% predictable.
|
My god, that movie was amazing, I have like, one minor complaint and that was the design of the Kaiju towards the end began to get a little too similar. Otherwise, the Jaeger designs were excellent, the Kaiju designs were overall fantastic, and the action was completely awesome. Every time they used one of the staple giant robot fighting moves I squee'd a little. Such a fantastic summer blockbuster.

Just watched it again in the imax cinema it's totally worth the money. What a HUGE screen

I loved the movie, but I feel like that was partly because you never get to see giant robots fighting monsters on a big screen with a big budget done well. The fight scenes were amazing without being too difficult to follow, the cinematography of the jaegers and kaiju was excellent, and the story overall was good. However, the characters felt only half-developed to me. Each had a climax in their own personal story arc which was well done in the movie, but I feel that we weren't prepared enough to fully appreciate them (with the possible exception of the scientists and the main character. They seemed pretty well fleshed out). But overall I loved that the film was really dedicated to excellent visuals, excellent robot-monster battles, and some pretty great themes. If the movie was perhaps a half hour longer and gave enough context to truly appreciate Mako, the Australian pilots, and Stacker, it would be truly amazing. However, as is, it is still an awesome blockbuster and my favorite movie that I have seen theatrically in a long while.
For the Eva debaters, I would say that simply sharing the same genre and subject material doesn't make this film a live-action Evangelion. It lacks a lot of things that made Evangelion unique and has plenty of unique qualities on its own. The theme about the basic imperfections (or incompletion) of individual human beings however is surprisingly transcendent between the two works, so they certainly do have a great deal in common. It's a great theme too, I loved both.

Such an amazing movie! I thought it did a great job immersing you in the world that they created. Action was awesome! Highly suggest it!

So I was reading things on a chinese site and found this gem: http://xbox360.tgbus.com/zixun/qtxg/201308/20130813165802.shtml
It contains some details on the next sequel: Robot vs Robot AND Monster vs Monster + Show Spoiler + (the Gipsy danger was left in the alien space and the monster brain which is a hive mind was difted with the scientist)
but right now nothing is set in stone, it might or might no have a sequel depending on the box office in asia most likely
|
I'm quite positive there will be a sequel. The film has hit around 350 worldwide and it hasn't opened in Japan yet... It's also expected to bring in a bit more in China after the 2 week hiatus for domestic films. If you add the fact that the movie is great for merch, and that sequels are nearly guaranteed to do good at the box office, we've probably got ourselves Pacific Rim 2.

Not even joking had to go like 3 hour drive to pick up any of the 7 inch action figures for PR and they were selling at ~$50 a pop with like 6 total in this massive swap-meet-ish warehouse full of nerdstuff stalls. And they only had 3 out so far (typhoon/danger/knifehead).
not related: coyote tango best gun cannon~

Trust the Russians to use a nuclear cooling tower for a head .
Loved the movie, got exactly what I expected from it. Biggest complaint was that Gipsy Danger got most (all?) of long fight sequences...would've loved to have seen Crimson Typhoon and Cherno One get more love.
