it had a similar feel to evangelion in that suddenly things could get fucked up and the jaeger is unexpectedly and abruptly smashed up and the pilots brutally killed if the movie had gone a mature route (and cut some of the boring/generic shit) it might have been really good and impactful basically 1) more jaeger/character development and interaction (less generic) 2) drop the "silly scientist" shit with their "suddenly i know all these extra important plot parts coz i read their mind" 3) extreme brutality leading to emotional impactfulness when jaeger pilots suddenly die 4) actually fuck it just watch evangelion, it is basically this movie but done perfectly, from the characters being 1000 times more interesting and impactful, to the "out of control jaeger" scene actually being suspensful and having someone burning their hands off, etc etc

Fine, they might have some basic tech stuff which is similar but even that doesn't hold water if you look closely, the Evangelions weren't even mechas, they were armored creatures! And I'm glad Pacific Rim did not go down the usual anime theme of "teenage angst and awkward sexual encounters everywhere" leading into mind-fucking people into thinking they are horrible perverted creatures (with allusions to some happy happy philosophy such as "we are all one" or some other nonsense that was rooted out of real philosophy in the middle ages).

Scientists were the best. + Show Spoiler + Striker Eureka sexiest Jaeger Agreed. Honestly, anyone who came into this movie for story or a solid plot are stupid. You come into this like you came into 2012 or Avatar: "Let's enjoy us some goddamn giant robots fighting giant monsters."

2) It's not trying to be Eva... but it's a great tribute to it. I mean this movie is basically squeezing an entire genre into just over two hours. It doesn't have time to set up something with significant gravitas AND also hit all the right notes of the genre. 3) Glados asking whether anyone wants to try again 4) I actually thought that the mega cheesy and obvious cockpit dialogue that basically explains the most obvious things is taking a page right out of the genre's roots. I mean in anime, people say like really really obvious things in the heat of the moment. Stuff like "hang in there!" "together we can do it!" 5) It is unforatunely the WORST movie to watch while wanting to pee. it's ALWAY RAINING. THERE"S WATER EVERYWHERE!!! ARGH.

It is a tribute to the mecha and kaiju genre of anime and film, as a whole. But it is not a 'tribute' to Evangelion, specifically. Guillermo del Toro has commented that he has not even watched Evangelion, and that influences he did draw for the movie include anime like Tetsujin 28 and Patlabor.

While del Toro might not have watched Eva i'm sure most people in production would have. I think there were some visual shots that were very evocative of Eva. I'm thinking in particular near the end where a jaeger is silhouetted against an alien sun. That shot seemed right out of Eva (to me). but yeah I see it as a tribute to the genre as a whole, and not eva in particular.

Evangelion does share the genre, but it's closer to Godzilla, Mazinger Z, or Big O. The very first kaiju looks like this guy from Panzer Dragoon. It's true that it could have went the mature route. But the director was shooting for the stuff he watched as a kid. In the end, it's hard to make giant robots brawling with giant monsters a serious thing. There's always questions like "why don't you just nuke them?" "Why not put more guns on those things?" Evangelion got away with a lot because they introduced the AT field that can only be neutralized by another AT field and to do this the evas had to be in close range and then there's the "twist" with how they manage to generate it. Then they do multiple times drop nuke like bombs on the things to little effect. You have to come up with all these rules to make it seem plausible. Overall, I think everyone agrees it could have had a better story and characters.

This part was actually fairly reasonable, the idea behind the jaegers being that you beat the Kaiju to death with blunt trauma, rather than blow them up (collateral damage) or cut them up (contamination due to blood poisoning) and then clean up manually.

I love how the arguments of the people following this line of reasoning can be copy/pasted to defend any Transformers movie. Did I walk into the theater expecting a Kubrick movie? No. Does it mean the plot, characters and acting had to be terrible? No.
