Transformer's heaven is dumber than any wall around an ocean. It could be dumber than anything. Also, robots that fart, are racist. Pacific Rim knows it's dumb and doesn't care, which is what is needed. Transformers....yeah, fuck Michael Bay.

They embraced the over-the-top cheesiness of the whole genre is a.....tasteful..? way. The cheesy one liners were pretty good, the movie didn't take itself seriously, etc. Also appreciated the lack of glorification of the military, no over the top gruesome scenes focused on gore. Just good monster-robot fights.

Right after the main character was all "We don't have anymore weapons and BOOM, they have a giant ass sword they can kick ass with. I watched the movie in Taiwan and I heard there were different versions where Mako was dubbed English whenever she spoke Japanese and the regular version where she wasn't dubbed.

If we're talking about dumb shit you watch for fun, Transformers films were better, yet they were absolutely vilified. They had giant robots doing cool stuff and Megan Fox, and they didn't make me want to laugh uncontrollably at how through the roof ridiculous everything is. Pacific Rim is like a high budget version of Power Rangers, with all the extra budget going into making better looking robots (yet somehow just as awkward and clumsy as the Power Rangers ones). Somehow Michael Bay came out of it as being the evil lord of all-bad-that-is-Hollywood, while Del Toro is a super cool lord of the nerds who makes awesome robot movies. I don't know who's being the hipster in all that mess, but it sure sounds like double standards. you have a problem with the coast line walls? ya because governments always do the smartest, most logical thing possible....lol What planet are you from?

It is a classic plot point for all anime "giant robot" movies and TV shows that their funding is cut when the fighting gets hard. It is always followed by "this new system will defend us without issue and make sure that no one gets hurt, unlike you reckless robot pilots". You can replace the wall with any of the following: Unmanned, computer controled robots Some automated point defense system A forcefield or bubble Peace talks that are clearly a trap Some sort of long range cannon that will kill the monster before it shows up And, as sure as the sun rises, the system fails and the scrappy group of pilots who still had faith in the robots they piloted rushes in and proves that the old systems are the best. Also, as some point the power and computers will be knocked out and only the older robot that wasn't upgraded will run at full power. This is all standard issue for Giant Robot action.

I was mostly responding to all the people who said "OMG, the wall is so dumb, why would they do that" when giant robots with swords are running around killing stuff.

No, there was one line that wasn't subtitled in the entire movie. Someone asked what that line was.

I just wanted to point out that Giant Robot anime has a grand history of countries making really stupid decisions related to not funding their giant robot super squads.

I can definitely see J.J. in that look, Joss not as much though. Will probably have to watch it again. ![]() Unfortunately, it seems the movie's not doing so great at the box office. It got beat by "Grown Ups 2" (wtf) and Despicable Me 2 (on its second week). My guess is that it requires a suspension of disbelief that a lot of audiences don't have, which unfortunately affects the entire premise of using giant robots. I remember watching Gipsy punching that fat kaiju and thinking, 'wow, that's just not very effective'. But to anyone who grew up watching anime and creature flicks, Pacific Rim will feel like coming home. Just never thought we'd be in the minority. That and to be really honest, I thought the screenplay could have been a little better, I mean in execution, it's not up to Guillermo's usual standards.

That can be the saving grace for movies like this, which feature huge action and easy to follow plot. Grown Ups 2 has no foreign potential, so even though it is being Pacific Rim domesticly, it is behind it in world wide earnings.
