Edit: I didn't catch this during film, but apparantly the shiny blue blood of kaijus is supposed to be really toxic and hazardous that should be contained as much as possible, so is that why punching them to death is 1st option and missiles/sword is the last?
Because Kaiju blood is so toxic, the preferred way to kill them is to bludgeon them to death, rather that splatter them all over the place.

there really should have been a jaeger with a huge hammer :D

It wasn't really explained in the film, but that is apparently the case based off of interviews, etc.
It let you see them faintly when they were sneaking around. I am 100% sure it was done intentionally, because without the blue a lot of the scenes would have been so dark you would have no idea what was going on.
I really appreciated that actually. So many of the fight scenes were in the dark, but between the Jaegars, the Kaijus, and the helicopters you could actually see what the heck was going on.
Each Jaegar looks like it would cost about as much as an aircraft carrier to build (probably more), so wouldn't a more cost efficient approach be to just nuke the monsters as soon as they came from the portal? Humanity had tens of thousands of nukes at this point and mass producing them would be dirt cheap in comparison to trading billions of dollars worth of expensive robotics for kaiju piecemeal.

You are making sense... thus you are doing it wrong.
Nuke detention and big things smashing building are way over used today... I thought del Toro could've been a little bit more creative with how it ended (also it was such a puss out when they didn't kiss at the end) My main peeve though was the middle section was sooo poorly written. It was so obvious that Asian girl and white main character were going to be Jaeg partners, so all the drama with them not being partners and the commander/ Australian dude being doushey about it was arduous as hell and really pointless. The more interesting plot point during this section was Charlie Day (scientist guy) trying to drift with the Kaiju. I thought he was going to find out something mindblowing about the Kaiju and the humans, which would lead to a plot twist at the ending...thus I was rather disappointed... I'm not going ruin it for people who haven't seen the movie, but the info obtained wasn't really interesting.
My favorite thing was the shot of the Asian girl centered with the umbrella in front of the landing helicopter! Also it was reminiscent of Mech Warrior which definitely made me happy.

Those fuckers were fast and that last one seemed unimpress with the nuke. Also, nuking the ocean every couple of months would not be the best plan ever.
I still think this movie was the best thing ever (the big O tribute with the elbow rockets? Priceless) but my one quibble is how the fuck does stick fighting determine whether their memories are drift compatible?

The whole point is to have GIANT ROBOT
It was explained in Pacific Rim: Tales from the Year Zero (Comic) why Nukes' a no-no. The comic actualy explained better how jaegers and kaijus and the Pacific wall came to be. They could make another movie "Pacific Rim: K-Day" (prequel?) based on the comic alone.

If you start thinking too much this movie will just make less and less sense. For example, why are there pilots even. Should just be controlled remotely.
lag
This movie is called the Pacific Rim, not the US West. Have you ever tried to play KR <-> NA on Bnet?
But slightly more seriously, you know how unreliable Wi-Fi is? It's because a hard connection is always more reliable (and usually much higher bandwidth) than an air interface (e.g. wireless/cellular). Also, they need the pilots to control movement and balance and all of that, which is very hard for our computers/robots to simulate, so there would still have to be "pilots" even if it were remotely possible.

She's not Asian, she's Japanese. And yes I know that doesn't quite make sense ha ha

LOL! It's cuz of the shiny blue light coming out from their body.
