Movie itself was quite good. Fight scenes were great, just about what I expected going into it. Went in thinking it as a toned down EVA with characters with a lot less emotional baggage.

+ Show Spoiler + I don't know, still iffy about this. I mean I guess if being able to connect with it means it comes back to life and it can communicate again :S I still thought it was weird.

Idris Elba was fucking amazing such an awesome actor, so was Charlie Day. I wish they would have explored more efforts from other nations though, like where is Europe? Is the US, Japan, China, Russia, and Australia the only ones fighting these things? That and more Space tech stuff. + Show Spoiler + The Hivemind is supposed to be explored more in the next movie.

The acting was average and I thought Hunnam's performance was the weakest. He only had maybe one or two tone of voice with the very little facial emotion. That would explain why most of the early scenes is him with his shirt off in order to draw attention away from his acting. Kikuchi's performance wasn't stellar either, but I give her a pass since I don't think she is that fluent in English, but I could be wrong. I wished the two scientists would slow down when talking. The followup scene does explain or show what they're talking about, so it wasn't too bad. The hinted romance between Becket and Mori was weak at times, which made me roll my eyes. There has been quite a number of movies that I've seen recently where the romance was not believable at all. In general, the acting was serviceable and did its job. The fight choreography was badass. I loved how brutal and unforgiving the kaiju were. One of them was pretty cocky too during the fight in Hong Kong. Some of the kaiju were pretty smart by using tactics. It made the movie more intense since the kaiju weren't just brainless monsters. The jaegers were really cool and I liked Australia's Striker the most based on looks, weapons, and how it looked to be the fastest out of all the jaegers in the movie. China's Crimson Typhoon was pretty badass with its three arms and how the pilots used martial arts in their fighting style. Overall, I thought the movie was a very fun and entertaining movie. The acting was fine for the most part with some cringe worthy dialogue. The movie's soundtrack was decent with a pretty cool and heroic sounding song used during fights. I give this movie a 7/10. It definitely is a good summer blockbuster. I might even pick this up on blu-ray when the price is right.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the fighting scene (when they were doing the test), the fighting looks fluent and not so fake like some other western movies. Story is cheesy and some part its really hard to know what the scientists were saying, but luckily its not too hard to follow through. Definitely a cheesy good movie to watch. Would love a little bit less on characters but more on the kaiji side. My favourite part is when the Japanese little girl running away from the kaiji, it really shows the difference in size between the two and the intense pressure that the kaiji gives. I wished they could give some time for the other robots to show off too, I was really interested in the Russian one. 7.5 for the movie, add. 5 because it has scenes of Hong Kong, 8 out of 10 for me. 3D is a must for this movie imo

I'm really glad Guillermo del Toro helmed this film. His touch is evident all over the film, particularly in the action, which while loud, noisy and effects-laden and reliant, still had a coherence to it that didn't leave you feeling distracted like many other big effects films do (most notable and obvious example: the Transformers films). You had a sense of what was going on, and most importantly, both the monsters and the robots had an organic feel to them. Their motion felt plausible, even when staring at an absurdly enormous megazord. The other area where I feel Guillermo outdid himself was in the cockpit scenes. The way everything moved inside - both the people and the equipment - really contributed to the action scenes quite a bit. He clearly took his talent for breathing life into fantastical creatures and found a successful way to apply it there. The film would have been MUCH less interesting without the cockpits and the pilots inside them giving off as much feeling and character as they did. But, of course, as you all expected, the plot was thin (which is to be expected), and the characters and their development were even thinner (also to be expected, but still very disappointing). The part that irked me more than anything, though, was Mako, who had so many Asian stereotypes, I was taken aback a little bit. Issues with her character, however, pale in comparison to the main character, Raleigh, who was SOOO 'Murican, I could only laugh. Charlie Day/Burn Gorman, and to a lesser extent, Ron Perlman, all did terrific jobs in their roles. Idris Elba did well considering he was a walking typecast, but there honestly wasn't a whole lot to go off of. The Day/Gorman and Perlman trio gave the film much needed levity to allow you to forgive the terrible melodrama and allow for suspension of disbelief. All in all, I had a great time, though. The action was terrific, and it was a lot of fun. I'd definitely recommend seeing it. Just remember that it's exactly a summer tentpole, and never intends to be anything more than that. As long as you don't go in intending to take it seriously, it'll be awesome. On July 12 2013 14:22 Hyde wrote: That kaiju costume LOL + Show Spoiler + I don't know, still iffy about this. Suffice to say, they're able to operate on some level beyond the limits of the physical universe.

*vague, minor, non-spoilerish spoilers ahead* The only good aspects of this movie are the robot fights and Idris Alba. The dialogue was horrible. The story was even worse. Why do they call mind-melding 'drifting'? That is the worst descriptor they could possibly use. When I think of drift, I think of tumbleweed in a desert, a piece of rotten wood floating on water, or a car skidding out of control on a gravel road. The last thing I think of is two people's mind working as one (and if that's the case, why the fuck do they yell to each other inside the cockpit?). *rant incoming* Why is a Jaeger built in 2013 analogue? Why is there a Newton's cradle to pull me out of one of the only enjoyable parts of the movie? Why can a little girl outrun a sky-scraper tall Alien? Why are the major characters so BORING? Why do the potentially interesting ones (sans Idris Alba) get so little screen time? (I'm looking at you, Russians and Asian triplets!) Why are the scientists depicted as possibly the stupidest people in the entire film? Why does the alien have a paedophile tongue? Why are the Australian accents so AWFUL? Why am I not seeing more robots vs alien action? Why is most of the action set in the ocean, thus giving you no reference frame as to how fucking enormous and awesome these aliens/machines are? Why am I even ranting any more... The only explanation I can possibly imagine as to why this film is received better than Man of Steel is this movie literally had zero expectations on it's shoulders. Most of the criticism of Man of Steel comes down to people's pre-conceived notions of what should/shouldn't happen in a Superman flick getting shat on. While the film had pacing issues and a few silly moments, over-all the acting, action, and narrative cohesiveness was an order beyond what is offered in Pacific Rim. tl:dr Man of Steel shits on Pacific Rim, but is hated because people expected greatness from it yet it has flaws. However, regarding Pacific Rim, people expected a turd but what they got was a very shiny turd, so they're happy.

However, regarding Pacific Rim, people expected a turd but what they got was a very shiny turd, so they're happy. Simply: Because it's an unironic genre film. The problem with Man of Steel was it was trying too hard to ape The Dark Knight, people that are tired of the angst driven superheroes and all of the toned down realism that accompanied that particular wave of movies are refreshed by the unironic, over the top, straightforward action of Pacific Rim, and I agree with them. I'd still give it 8/10 because, you're right, the characters are pretty flat, but at least they don't have them sitting there talking to each other about pseudo-philosophical shit for 2/3 of the movie. Also, this movie was exactly what everyone expected it to be: awesome fight scenes of mech on monster action. Yeah, it did sag in the middle a bit, but overall, the action was the focus. It lived up to exactly what people wanted, they weren't expecting a movie that made them question humanity or shit like that, they wanted one where giant robots punched giant monsters in the face repeatedly, and they got it. Man of Steel did a lot of stuff, but among them, it fucked with an established character in a bunch of different ways that alienated the purists, and it focused on the psychological aspects of being a superhero rather than the fact that he's FUCKING SUPERMAN and can punch massive things and turn back the world by flying really fast. The purists hated the changes, comic book fans hated the gritty realism instead of the fantasy that comics offered. People expected Superman and got a grimdark deconstruction of him instead. That's why people were let down.
