TLDR : The best thing for Pacific Rim will be if all the other action movies this year underperform.
And in Forbes this week... another Pac Rim article...same writer
I wrote back in April that Pacific Rim‘s fortunes were somewhat tied to the relative quality and/or audience satisfaction of the summer slate up to that point. And, at this point in time, it still looks like Pacific Rim, if it’s as good as I’m hearing from those who have seen it, may well be ‘the one we’ve been waiting for’ in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Transformers, and Inception.
One of the channels I subscribe to on YouTube is Chris Stuckmann and he put out a non-spoiler review for the movie today. His problem with the movie is similar to how a lot feel about the Transformers live action movies, which is that the human element isn't so great. The action between the robots and Kaiju are well done though. I am still pretty excited to see the movie on opening weekend regardless.

now those who thinks this looks like EVA, explain yourselves.
Just because a few details were changed doesn't change the nature of the similarities. Re-wording a plagiarised essay doesn't make the content or arguments any differently.
I felt similar rage after seeing Kanye's Stronger video and all the elements stolen from Akira.
Anyone think the premise of this movie is very similar to the manga Attack on Titan? It's humanity desperate last stand against the unknown using technologies that transform ordinary people to similar size of the monsters?
Except they're not turning into Kaijus with biological pseudoscience and the premise of defending against giant monsters with robots isn't exactly the rarest thing in the world.

No kidding. God damn EVA copying Power Rangers. If you're going to have kids wearing skintight suits fighting giant monsters in giant robots, and least have the decency to use rubber suits. None of this cartoon shit.

But the robots are called jaeger and the main character name in the manga/ the one who can transform is Eren Jaeger. It probably just a coincidence.

I believe the word is homage. It is clear this move is pulling from all things awesome in giant robot and anime culture. There is a god damn rocket powered punch and all the jaegers are built by different nations.
Much like the best comic book movies, Pacific Rim will borrow the best parts of the Mecha stories and refine it downs to its core, spin it up and send it to us at the speed of light.

Yeah, this movie has huge robots and cool shit, AND is directed by someone who actually has talent. My problem was never with the "low plot, high visuals" type of movie. It was with the "low talent, low plot, high visuals" kind.
Now, the problem with Transformers wasn't the plot. It's that the plots weren't related to the huge robots and cool shit, and took up all the screen time.
I still hold that the 1st Transformers movie was one of the best adaptations of the franchise I've seen (granted, it's a very low bar), simply because the first half did a proper job of establishing the "Robots in Disguise" premise and the ludicrous nature of robots turning into cars, and the second half knew to get rid of all the bullshit and give you giant robots wailing on each other.
I'll agree that 2nd and 3rd were complete steaming piles of shit, though.
The one thing that can make Pacific Rim a total bust for me is if the trailers are showing you literally all of the action. I expect Guillermo Del Toro to have a clue, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if interpersonal issues and tacked on romance dominated 95% of the movie.

PL was brilliant partially because it was original... I already know PC will contain a scene with buildings being smashed, with things punching each other over and over, a romantic side-plot with a sexy chick, two dudes arguing about what direction they should go, and some bullshit speeches about saving humanity. Goddamn, even directing talent can't save something that is essentially a remake of every-single summer blockbuster produced in the last ten years. Plus from a marketing perspective Pacific Rim doesn't not have a solid established group of characters like most of the other blockbusters have (think Iron Man, WWZ (the book, Brad Pitt), the Lone Ranger).... Prediction=flop
The man directed Blade II and Hellboy II (granted, that Hellboy was a fairly good movie). I think you highly overestimate him if you believe he's above doing a summer Blockbuster.
Hellboy 2 was amazing. That, coupled with Pan's Labyrinth, was all I needed to get excited about this movie. I will see it as soon as I possibly can.
