My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Page 661

So I'm definately with Bio on this one, I certainly love the characters and the depth that all of the characters and mane6 are portrayed in. It adds amazing things to the show. However end of the day I watch it because it's so cheerful, vibrant and just feelgood. This episode was a pretty good one. I can't say I'm too bugged by the lack of background in terms of King Somber. It seems whenever I watch the episode without and prior input I don't take in and notice the same thing the rest of you all do... I don't understand, wat is gak? Also, wat is luna's book ._.

Not the best episode but wasn't the worst either. Lot of little funny jokes but King Sombre, as everyone else has noted, was extremely underwhelming. The songs had a little bit of a forced feeling to them but they are already growing on me.

"He... reeeeally loves getting his face painted." Oh rarity, you silly mare you.

Much of the episodes felt really forced though, or under developed. The songs felt like they were there just to be there, like the failure song, which seemed pretty stupid for having just accepted a task (failure before starting it, wut).

I give it meh/10 so far, pretty apprehensive about the rest of the season ^.^

i really liked first 2 episode but as some already said the evil dude really killed the mood so it's a 6.5/10 for me.

I didn't like this episode much either, but this isn't really my kind of episode (not a fan of the wedding special). It had enough things that make the show good that I was happy watching it, but I bet that had this been mid season it would have been a real let down.

I think the thing that may have bothered me the most is the vast number of questions the show never got around to explaining.

If the crystal empire is so important, why has it been left to fester in it's own pity for the past 1000 years since Somber was ousted the first time?
Why would Celesta frame the fate of the world as some kind of test, and add an arbitrary constriction?
Why did Cadance oscillate in her fatigue so rapidly?
The heart was in a room with no walls. Had no one looked up in the past 1000 years?
If Shining armor had only lost his magic when the mane 6 arrived, why had Cadance been up for the past 3 days?
How did Somber escape?
What was Somber trying to accomplish?
Pretty much anything having to do with Somber.
Why did they all turn into crystals at the end and get new haircuts (except Shining Armor)?
How the hell do you eat crystal corn? That sounds really painful.

Really any episode can be picked apart, but they have never left such a bitter taste in my mouth like this one has. Also this episode had the worst songs IMO. I think that this is the first time an episode has had songs and I felt that they made it worse.

did they literally just explain candence's entire lore in 2 episodes or is she not actually from that city?

The episode shows both Celestia AND LUNA banishing king somber in what is 1000 years ago (Celestia doesn't say about or circa, but precisely 1000 years ago) and Luna was banished to the moon precisely 1000 years ago at the beginning of the first episode of season 1... which means Luna was banished to the moon when king somber was banished. I guess it can be taken as a rough estimate, but throughout the shows two season we've experienced what, 1 or 2 years? I know it's nitpicking, but am I wrong? XD

1000 years is really more of a relative term. why would they say 900 or 1100 when 1000 rolls off the tongue so much better
another convenient plot point not much to really look at.
because when you are tired you slowly lose focus. being woken up again regains that focus. I'm pretty sure magic is focus based to some degree
because the heart was in the center of the room no one could see it
magic eroded like in the case of luna on the moon
probably saw his greatest fears in the mirror below the tower and became corrupt trying to save the empire somehow.

A lot of the problems I think people are having with it are caused by it following the s2 finale. the season premiers have all been a little on the weak side (discord himself notwithstanding) and coming off such an earthshaking good 2 parter like the royal wedding its hard for anything to really seem good in comparison. Expect the rest of the season to get better as the writers and the animators shake off the rust.

Sombra -> Sombre, Somber, Sombrero (?), Slumber (??)

I didn't really expect a great opener. I don't really like the epic foil-the-villain episodes as much. But even so it was disappointing. I didn't really care much about the crystal ponies or the villain. In the previous openers and the wedding episodes there was a lot of buildup and a lot of emotion leading up to the conclusion, but in this one I just didn't feel anything

With the adventuring episode out of the way, I'm hopeful for a great Episode 3!

I'm going with Bio here and give it Crystal Twilight/10 because that's clearly the most sensible thing to do when you have a 1 to 10 scale. I wasn't at all turned down by the lacking villain, they just needed to show some sense of danger and they did that with the black crystals etc.
I was more disappointed with the songs being sort of randomly strewn throughout the whole two-parter (apart from the Failure song which I found pretty fitting where it went). But that's really more nitpicking than anything, I enjoyed it just as much as I've always enjoyed the show and I'm excited that there's a whole new season of pony coming now

And mane villain only laughed in sinister way...
