Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.

Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

Nominated for the 4th Manga Taisho Awards (2011) and winner of the 35th annual Kodansha Manga award for Best Shounen, Nominated for the 16th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize (2012)

It also gets an anime this spring, which hopefully isn't censored too much:

Other recommendations: Vinland Saga, Historie, Dorohedoro, Vagabond and Tower of God (ToG is not as mature and a bit more comedy, but still a great read).

Oh snap, this was one of my favorite books when I was still into manga(i'd say it's top 3 next to Planetes and 20th century boys). The imagery of this series is so unique and creepy. It's a shame that the story kinda goes down the drain when they introduced the midget fairy.

Honestly I dont know where this is going, its kind of stale but now we get to see how "Falconia", Griffiths new land and castle is shaped up. Has he gone good all of a sudden or was he good all along but went evil for some time and made sacrifices and killed people to be able to be good and make a peaceful, prosperous land later?

I dont know but I think (or atleast hope) he is evil so he get to be that final boss in the end.
Would be pretty anticlimatic if he is "good", WTF would Gatts do then? Probably go all emo and dont know what to do and that would be so lame.

dont forget that the whole reasont aht people are swarming to falconia as refugees is because Griffiths arrival in the world released all those monsters so at best hes cleaning up his own mess

He's a member of the God Hand, he screwed everyone he ever knew in his search for power, he commands a legion of monsters, how could he be good?

He's been hinted to be something of an anti christ figure.

Otherwise known as 2014.

I'll be a great day when I'm 80 and I read the last Berserk chapter written by Cyborg Miura.

well arguably it was more of the skull knight's doing when he tried to kill griffith with his sword made of beherits
was it intentional? and was it the beginning of the age of darkness as in the prophecy?

"When the Sun has died five times, a red lake will appear at the West of the city with a name both new and ancient, and it will be the sign that the fifth angel, the Falcon of Darkness, is born. The Angel shall be both master of the sinful black sheep and king of the blind white ones. He is the one who shall bring an age of darkness upon the world."

or another unforseen event in the causality ? :p
I guess we'll just have to wait until we see the elf king who is a confirmed "good guy"

Well the only thing we know about griffith is that he always wanted a kingdom of his own. we readers will always stand by guts because we have seen some shit, but what of the other humans who are given protection and much more? Even rickert seems to be having second thoughts now...
Also don't forget that gut's and casca's child seems to be having some influence over griffith since he's part of him

I looooove this series...it's easily my favorite anime. Can anyone recommend anything similar? I've seen gurren lagann, trigun, akira, cowboy bebop, outlaw star, dbz, naruto, bleach etc and they were pretty good too but just weren't quite as awesome as berserk imo. Right now I'm watching d grayman and it's pretty mehhhh but it's the only decent anime I could find haha...so ya any recommendations would be appreciated :p

Claymore, at least at first, has a very similar vibe to Berserk. But the anime didn't really followed the manga past the beggining.

Also, someone already recommended the ongoing manga Shingeki no Kyojin. Very similar in it's horror, brutality and overall sense of despair.

Thats some really high quality animation.

berserk was pretty cool for its first season, but then the gore and the dark fantasy was just too much..
