So I've been reading the Berserk manga again, from the start this time instead of picking up where the anime left off and oh my god how, so good.
Anyone else read it recently or thought about picking it up ?
For those that do for some reason not know what Berserk is about, it follows Gatsu / Guts who is a professional mercenary from birth basically and his struggles through a world filled with evil. First chapter was released in 1990 and it is ongoing.
The manga is very gory and gothic, set in a medieval setting in a mystical world.
Anime series portraying a small part of the total story was released and a new one will come out soon'ish.
It's easily one of my favourite manga series of all time. Shame it's going to take another decade or two to finish. I just hope I live long enough to see it end.

I do hope he starts writing more chapters , hard to wait months to know what happens next.
I read all chapters like a month ago when I was ill and this manga is just insane. I'm waiting for more chapters to come to read it. In the beginning I was hesitating to continue as it was so dark and brutal that I wasn't even sure if I could finish reading the chapters. It was even darker and worse than a thriller from a movie. Definitely one of the darkest manga I've seen so far (in the beginning) to a more modern adventurous manga with less gore. I would recommend this only to 16+ as this is just an insane manga :D
He starts being a bit faster, usually since a lot of years now, he was doing 3 chapters in one month and then took a 5 months break. This time the break is a bit more than 1 month (24 june to be precise for the next chapter).
I've read most of the manga a while back. I should read it again from the beginning to the latest volume. As for the anime, it's my favourite but man do I wish for another season or something. I read that there's going to be some film being made. I would rather have more of the anime though.
I've been reading it for ages, anime didn't really even begin to compare to the manga though imo. Makes for a decent introduction to serie I guess. There should be also a new anime coming out soonish, unless if I got trolled really hard.
One of the five short teasers, does get me pumped.
Afraid Berserk will never come to an end though with the like six months waiting times between chapters. Luckily Miura is still fairly "young" so we have time.

They are going to do another series of anime. I think they'll actually do the whole manga this time around. Hope so at least.
Love the dark style the the manga and the artist's drawing style. He uses a lot of detail, even in backgrounds and it really adds something to the manga.
Yeah I've read the whole thing a couple times, when I'm not just opening a random chapter and killing time. But since it takes so long for each issue to come out (like my other favorite ongoing manga, Gunnm:Last Order) I try to take long breaks from reading new releases, so that I can get a substantial development each time.

I envy your patience I even read spoilers if I can get my hands on them.

I do the same too not with just Berserk but pretty much every manga I read.
easily one of the greatest manga ever made. i've re-read the series from start to finish about half a dozen times now waiting for new chapters to be released. honestly don't mind the long wait if it means that the quality will always be top notched.
This is the only anime I've watched that made me want to read the manga (not really huge on anime but this is excellent). I've only read a bit so far but it's very good.
Its going to be a couple of movies (I dont know how long or how many) instead of a series of episodes. So the whole of the manga wont be covered. Thats all I know although its a bit shady with all the details how its going to really turn out. The first movie is said to be coming very soon "halfway through 2011" is a official statement. But since we are there already... I dont know. A month or two maybe?
And yes this is one hell of a manga! Easily a top 10 manga for sure and I have read ALOT and most of them are very good (that I have read) so all I can say is that this manga is godly good... Has a very very deep story and is very well-made. Definitely recommended!
Eh, maybe I'm in the minority here, but as much as I love this manga, I don't recommend that anyone read it past volume 14. It's astonishing just how bad this series becomes after the Golden Age arc is over. It feels like the author has completely forgotten what made the series so great. Nowadays, when I read this manga, I feel like I'm watching a bad JRPG. None of the new characters are as memorable as the original hawks, and the kids are especially annoying.
Of course, the first 14 volumes are just about the best manga ever created, bar none.

I beg to differ slightly. The manga is awesome all the way till Volume 21. In fact, the Dark Tower arc is the highlight of the manga for me.
Then, it goes downhill...almost indistinguishable from any other shonen manga.

the godhand Slan in the troll's forest and Skull Knight
Since we've got so many enthusiasts all gathered here in 1 place can any of you recommend a similar manga? Dark/Gruesome and awesome? Or smth with a nice medieval setting? (not necessarily european medieval, but I'd prefer people with armour on and fighting with swords/axes/spears and the like.)
Also about the new berserk anime: how is it supposed to be in the form of movies? Like Hellsing Ultimate OVAs type of thing?
I really liked the golden age arc but after that my intrest kind of dropped.
As far as i can tell though the golden age arc is one of the best manga's ever.

It's called Homunculus. It's not medieval but it is dark. Has some of the best artwork you will ever find and is probably my favorite manga ever, not that i read all that many because easily 99% makes me fall asleep past the first 5 pages.
Well, you can still try Vinland Saga (first chapter here if required). It's not as dark as Berserk but it's pretty good and i like the way the story is writen.
Berserk is easily in my top 5 manga of all time. Only downside its the pace of the chapter release lately... sometimes it goes on a 6 month breaks.
The best manga AMV of all time

Im not sure about the Berserk movies but i think it will be something similar to NGE movies.
Vinland Saga is really similar to Berserk minus the supernatural/fantasy setting. Other awesome manga that i recommend are : Akumetsu , Battle Royale , Sanctuary, Gantz, Vagabond.
I just finished reading Berserk about a month ago and say that its a very good manga. People made it out to be very gory/violent but I found Battle Royale and Gantz to be much worse in those regards(which is also recommended).
As with other awesome manga, the only complaint is about when the story will finally finish and time between releases. Epic manga with epic antihero and villain (what a bastard).
I am halfway through the first page on the thread and the background music switches to "Forces (God Hand Mix)" And I am like: What? O_o
On topic: I love this Manga and Anime and like many others I fear that it will never ever end. I hope the movies can hold up to the material.
But when I compare the stuff we see at the moment then I have to say it does not compare in any way to the plot around the Elves of Misty Valley (Hell it does not compare to most of the things we have seen so far). That arc (?) was intense/shocking/horrifying. This was the best part for me. I really would like to see that on screen.
And why did he ever introduce kids to this story? why? I mean something to lighten the mood to contrast it with the horror and gore okay! but kids?
I like the remake of the OtakuVengeance amv better:
It's one of my favorite mangas but the rate of release (like 5-6 chapters per year, small ones too with no real progression) is what kills it for me.
The author, if I recall correctly, has stated he doesn't really have the motivation to finish it. This side arc (that has lasted for like 3 fucking years) seems like he's just stalling because he has no idea how to finish it.
A great manga ruined by a bad mangaka, if that makes sense.
I've only read one of the books, but what I did read I thoroughly enjoyed. Now that I know there is an anime I'll definitely be looking into it. Thanks ^^
Only Anime I have watched at least 20 times. At least. Character development kicks ass.
Pretty sure the new anime is going to cover the entire series...besides the tweets saying it will cover the entire manga, the trailers show griffith from the golden age arc, puck, gutz in the Berserk Armor, the hill of swords scene, Zodd in the Golden Age...That's a huge timeline there.

12 kingdoms isn't nearly as dark but it has a medieval setting... it's called junnki kokki or something in jap.

Ubel Blatt. It's often compared to Berserk in a good way/bad way. Berserk fans seem to enjoy denigrating it as a worse version of Berserk though I actually like Ubel Blatt more though I read Blatt first. Both feature anti-heroes, share a magical medieval setting and use gore, but I would say it's like how shounen mangas are similar to each other.
Once you finish the sort of "prologue" story you'll understand why Ubel Blatt is interesting. Ubel Blatt is currently on hiatus though, but apparently Berserk has pacing problems too.
Another recommendation would be Claymore. A group of female warriors called "Claymores" protect the general population from monsters called Yoma, the thing is "Claymores" are half Yoma so risk turning into a monster when they use their "yoki" energy.
Despite it being mostly females this is not a fan service manga. The manga also takes a while to get interesting, I would say after the Teresa arc is where it starts to pick up. You can also watch anime for about 20 of the 26 episodes before it starts detouring to an anime specific ending. You will miss some foreshadowing and some things will be different with the second main character near the end.
I really enjoyed Berserk for the longest time, but I don't like the path the author has taken in the more recent manga volumes. The tone of this manga is just so depressing all the way through, but my hope stays strong as Gatts stays strong. As long as Gatts lives, there is hope that he will find happiness again. Though the author does a great job at making that hope seem as slim as can be.
I remember when I first discovered this manga that I marathon'd it up to the most recent chapter in about 3 consecutive days. Good times, although I'd really like to see something other than tentacles haha.
My favorite manga/anime/story/anything of all time. My favorite part is the couple volumes before the eclipse.+ Show Spoiler +
as Guts is leaving the hawks. Specifically his conversation with Judeau. It also has the best, most tastefully done and meaningful sex scene of anything ever.
I like where the newer chapters are going though. Berserk is the kind of thing you give all the time it needs, like a Blizzard game. Halfway through the Tower of Retribution I didn't expect it to be such a meaningful and important arc. I'm actually more excited than ever for the future of the story as the most significant event since The Eclipse happened a few chapters ago.
I also welcome the new characters, especially Serpico. I don't know how long Guts and Puck could have carried the story or survived wandering around alone. Ishidro isn't intrusive and Shierke has grown on me.
I do plan on reading this at some point, but I've never really liked reading ongoing manga with few new chapter releases. I took a 4 year break from Elfen Lied so I could read the entire thing.

Iono, I am starting to feel the opposite of how you feel. Right before this arc where the world get all funky, it feeled like the story was heading somewhere.+ Show Spoiler +
I mean, Skull knight was collect behelit and guts got the black armor and discovered that his sword has been magically enchanted due to the countless demon he slain etc etc etc.
During this time, It felt like the story was progressing some where and there was going to be a big clash but then suddenly the world got funky. Then suddenly your left with a wtf feeling and it felt like everything was back to square one.
My opinion is that their need to be some significant or progression after fighting all these tentacle/Sea God. My theory is that Mermaid Girl is probably going to join the gang after this is all over. If she doesnt join the crew then that mean this entire arc is completely pointless....or someone is either going to gains something of significant. Otherwise this arc is completely pointless as far as I can see because I feel no progression from this arc at all.
After watching the anime some years back I read the all of the manga material. I stopped a while ago though because there was so long between new releases that I couldn't quite get in the mood of the manga anymore.

The Sea God thing certainly isn't the peak of the story, but its a fast-paced arc (if you ignore publication breaks) that should be ending fairly soon. Once we meet Hanabofuku I expect to see some massive plot twists and get hammered by all sorts of crazy knowledge. Give it time. Berserk is not a series that can be rushed.

Iono, it sure feels like it at it peak atm because they are killing the Sea God. If this arc is ending soon then that just prove my points that this entire arc was irrelevant. Maybe this arc was just to explore the new world that Griffith has created? Iono...beside that I am not feeling this arc that much.

I don't think the arc will be completely pointless regardless how it wraps up. My view on the arc is that currently things are getting better for humanity back on the mainland. While things are still going to shit for our main characters where ever they go lol

Oh, I'm quite certain that's the entire point. Except, that shouldn't take years to accomplish. Seriously, it's not a particularly interesting sub plot in the first place, and he has taken so many breaks in between these releases. I wish he would continue at this fast pace (for him anyway) and end the manga with the next arc or 2, because I will probably never finish it otherwise.
To be honest, I was initially eager for this arc BECAUSE it was about exploring the new world. Unfortunately, this arc has proven to be the most disappointing one in Berserk yet. Plus it's stalling the real story from continuing.

The story in it is interesting, the characters are great, and, unlike Berserk it has 0 ratings below "Decent" on ANN.
Then you should read the manga because the first 5 pages is of him screwing a chick that he knows was a demon and then used his cannon arm to rip her face off after he "finishes" his man business first of course. Incase you didnt notice, this is manga and not anime. The anime does not do it justice for cutting alot of scenes that were to gruesome and left with a mega cliffhanger.
I didn't like Berserk because I didn't like the setting, the characters and the story. Demons from hell, eternal suffering, mercing around, cannon arm blahblahblah. Booooooooring. Shigurui is much better, it's more down-to-earth (but still borderline fantasy), gritty, and dramatic. There is great character development involved, awesome antagonisms, secrets and twists.

Ah well, many people have different opinion on setting. I have watch to many samurai setting and have grown tired of it. Such as Samurai Deeper Kyo, Basilisk, Ninja Scroll, Ninja Resurrection, Samurai X, Samurai 7 etc etc etc....that it just got borrrringgggg.
I personally like berserk because the setting is more unique then just a simple samurai setting that has been over used. Like seriously, when do you see a guy that carry a big sword, with a cannon in his arm, going into war as well as fighting demon as well.
I am not saying that the show your recommend is bad at all. I am definitely going to try it out after watching that guy sliced up the 2 guy faces and set them on a plate. It definitely looks very gruesome and twisted and definitely worth a shot as well. I am just saying that although you say Berserk is boring to you because of the setting, it is definitely more unique then another samurai setting.
Thanks Manit0u for reminding me about Shigurui. I loved the anime but put the manga on hold because it was not fully translated but just checked and its completed. Gonna start reading soon.

The anime has plenty below decent with its only 485 ratings compared to the 3582 of berserk.
I watched the first 2 episodes of Shigurui and thought it was kind of meh.. more like violence only for the sake of violence, but maybe I will watch it again.
Anyway imo when it comes to anime AniDB is far superior to ANN when searching for new quality stuff.
I love berserk and eagerly await the new anime series re-make but man, that manga is seriously taking forever to finish. I hope the author doesn't pass away before it's fully completed because at this rate it seems there's several years left until it's done.
there was a blog topic about it a while back that said that it was a realistic/dark samurai manga and since I really like vagabond and berserk I started reading shigurui
omg that blog was the biggest troll post ever
It's more like a overdone samurai horror manga than anything else

Homunculus is good. It does have a dark tone to it but it can get freaky weird sometime....and like seriously freaky weird but it good.
I didn't like the anime that much (compared to the manga it's low budget, short and contains some filler episodes when the main plot could have been) but it ends at the such a good point in the story that I just HAD TO read the manga.
The manga is definitely the best manga there is, even though it's released so slowly .

However I actually can't even remember anymore why they are going to the fairyland. I'm not kidding so could someone refresh my memory...
The whole reason the entire party is together in the first place...to get the bitch's memory back. Bitches love their memories. Basically this is playing out to be a role reversal at the surface between the two main characters.
The problem with Berserk is that the chapters are released really sporadically. I believe that the magazine it's published in is bi-monthly but for the last few years we've only been getting like 10-12 chapters per year if that.
I would also argue that the story has some pacing issues, after the band of the hawk arc (what the anime covers) it feels like a lot of the arcs move at a snail's pace with some of them not seeming to have a lot of repercussions to the main story. The main goal of Gutt's band right now is to get Casca to the Elfking so he can supposedly cure her mental deterioration and we've been trying to get there for it seems like over ten years (the manga has been going since 1988 I believe). A good example of the storyline malaise is what's happening right now, I don't understand how the island there on with the sea monsters/pirate monsters factors into anything, I really don't.
I am looking forward to the new anime/ova/whatever that they're putting together though. I like the style of the story if nothing else.

Yeah, I'm sure if we were to go back and read the more recent events five years down the road the pacing will seem much better. The breaks are such a killer though =/
Like I said before though, you gotta give things time. Miura is the best of the best, he won't let us down. Retribution seemed to have little to do with things until we got smacked in the face with + Show Spoiler +
Griffith's rebirth.
I think Miura's had his hands in the movies for a while now though, and its been eating into his manga time. He is no slacker, he doesn't take breaks for no reason.
This may just be me, but I had to drag myself through the first section of this manga. The story finally got good when they meet Griffith at the dying smith's house and set off. Everything before that was pretty much mindless killing with an uninpressive storyline.
Now, I am really starting to like the characters, rather than hating pretty much all of them. While the story has become a bit more generic, the characters now have pretty good developement and the setting is epic.
The last ~15 chapters have brought this manga from a 7.5 to a 9.5.
If the heartbeat has a force stronger than a cannon, would cutting it with a sword result in an explosion of blood strong enough to kill Gatts? The scale of the sea god is truly a scary thing.
the drawings, the expression(of faces, the thoughts, the stories, the characters and the most important is the love that guts have towards caska. It truly is amazing for such a man to fights his ass off, i'd say no more, this manga, can-not-be-missed.

lol more like 22 years ago I think.. but still good manga except it's being to turn on to a meh fest like what some one said with all the side quest.. I think this is going to take around 10 more years to finish since the other 4 gods hasn't been explained well or why are they gods like griffith.

Trailer for the new 2012 Berserk movie ! Im so excited for this !
It looks awesome but I dont think they can do the whole golden age arc in just 3 movies without cutting some parts of the story unless they are doing 2-3 hour long movies.
I was getting really worried about Gatts, but it looks like the Merrow are going to help him out. Maybe he wont have completely squashed eternal organs and eyes after all this. The sea monster is so awesome. I love it.
i swear kenta miura infuriates me almost as much as kubo tite, we never know for certain when he's gonna take another indefinite break and leave us hanging again, it almost makes me think that he is doing it on purpose. so pretty much he's been trolling us for the past 2 decades.... >.>

All I hope is that Griffith gets taken down in the most cruelest way you can imagine, and then multiplying that by an infinity factor. That and Guts getting together with Casca

fuck, that looks good!
Yeah, I was worried about the CGI at first, but when you see an entire army fully animated at a high frame rate rather than pans over still shots it all seems worth it.
A few people on skullkight.net already saw it and said it was absolutely amazing, and even with the cut content it's still great.
I didn't expect anything, but when I saw link for a new chapter I nearly had heart attack. And then I almost had a second one when I saw "continues feb 10th!", but I just can't die until I see the end of this.
It is one of my first mangas (it's pretty much what got me into reading mangas after animes cliffhanger), I remember reading it until my eyes would hurt, taking some sleep and reading it again. So realistically merciless. I read it just for story, but now.. Now after looking at bleach and some other mangas I just take my time to appreciate details and effort put into every page.
I don't demand new chapters or plot development, I simply appreciate it. I'm a happy man.
(Its still weird to see Guts hang out with bunch of kids, but as we know, nothing lasts forever, especially around Guts)
Ehh Berserk is boring nowadays. The release schedule is too slow and they're fighting some enemies of no consequence. Also the ending is kinda predictable: Guts kills Grifith and then kills himself. Or atleast thet's my take on it.

I really don't think Berserk has ever been predictable. Obviously Guts will beat Griffith somehow, but will he survive? Will Casca ever become sane again? How the hell will anyone ever beat the God Hand? What happened between Skull Knight and Void? There's so much in the world of Berserk that is impossible to answer right now.
The first out of three berserk movies from the "Berserk Golden Age Arc" era is announced(by warner bros) to be released 4th of feb in Japan this year. So i guess the sub version is right around the corner. The second is suppose to come out in june, the third some time late 2012... Woho. This is the best news i've read in ages!

I think the biggest question is: will Miura actually finish Berserk before he dies?.
This Manga, Gantz, dorohedoro and another wich I can't remeber the name of (it's about titans eating people in a fantasy world) are definately my favorite mangas of all time I think everyone who likes Berserk should really check these manga out, especially Dorohedoro.
You have some nice tastes in manga then . Although gantz and berserk are getting kinda weak maybe its just the slow releases. The manga you couldnt remember is Shingeki no Kyojin took me a while to learn that name.
I love both Berserk and Gantz for the same reason. At some point the creators made a scenario which is almost ridiculous in terms of what the protagonist or protagonists are supposed to accomplish. It amounts to people basically having to "kill a God." The creators then make all of these barriers that make it close to impossible and then they somehow have to either make it happen or at least make it interesting. It's a tough thing to pull off. I think that Gantz will turn out ok, but I wonder how Berserk will end, or if it ever will. It seems like it's winding down, but there is so much left for Guts to do.
At least we're dealing with living creatures in Gantz. You can kill living beings. With Berserk you're fighting gods that respawn when the let you kill them (as was the case with the succubus thing). If they're the embodiment of things rather than entities unto themselves (pestilence, lust, ambition, sloth, etc) then there's simply no point in even trying. Perhaps Griffith's current human incarnation will provide the weakness needed for a kill. Why he would bother coming into a human body, much less the child of Guts, is puzzling to me.
Been ages when I watched the last ep of the Berserk anime and after my exams, I will pick up the manga I guess...still wanna know how everything turns out after the bloodshed
I only picked up Berserk 2 months ago, but I ended up reading all about 300+ chapters in 3 days. It's pretty good, so I'm fine when the author takes their time to map out a coherent and thought provoking story.

gantz depresses you? i'm just curious as to how that is and i'm hoping you mean the storyline but the whole early theme of berserk is rather depressing. it's almost like anything bad that can happen to you, will happen and that's the actual reality.

I'll try to explain.
In Berserk, you can always rely on Guts to be a badass and the secondary chars are usually pretty solid too. In Gantz however, the main char keeps making weird decisions I can't agree with, not even mentionning that the author likes to kill his chars at the most random times.
And I get why you could not like Gantz but like Berserk. Gantz has a very, very cynical view of people as a whole. Even the main character ends up being a massive dick most of the time, and not for good reasons like Guts in the Black Swordsman, just because Kurono is a douche. Berserk is so full of genuine emotion and human interactions, just take some time to read the conversation between Guts and Judeau before Guts leaves the hawks, or even the Guts and Casca sex scene which is easily the most well done, realistic and tasteful sex scene of all time. Gantz is very different, Gantz is just brutal and mysterious.
I do love Gantz though, it's probably my #2. You get the feeling that nobody is ever really safe from dying, and that anything can happen. After the entire team but Kurono died on the Buddha mission I fell in love. That was probably the only moment in manga that can compare to the eclipse.

Oh btw, if ever you're interested in the very spoilerish/mysterious main plot (which the author took down, because it gave away too much of what could happen in the end) Chap. 83 "The Idea of Evil"

This is sigle handedly the best anome out there Kentarou Miura is a Genius although crazy or in my terms sane he has portrayed everything you should need to know in life in his manga that of which is better than the bible! Also a phenominal artist a true one if anything.

I think you're confusing chapters with volumes. Berserk currently has 36 volumes and the anime covered until about volume 12-13, cutting some of the story out.
In any case, you're for a long and amazing read... Hell, I remember when I read all of the manga available in a few days, at a certain point I actually became a little depressed given how dark the story and some of it's undertones are at some points.

Don't worry I'm pretty sure everyone except Guts will die sooner or later and Guts will probably die in the end as well after he kills Griffith.
Only 7 pages for this glorious piece of art ;____;. Also Miura has said he wants a good end for Guts, that could mean many things...but I have a feeling even in the Berserk universe he might want guts to survive somehow with caska. I predict his current party will get wiped out though like the previous. Miura doesn't want people thinking he's gone soft. People have to remember this is setting up perfectly to end up like the band of the hawk.

The manga is still good, but it's not nearly as good as it used to be, imo.
Well I guess it's nice to learn a bit more of Guts past, still chapter bit of a letdown after the usual long wait though.
Also I'd like the recommend the following Manhwa to Berserk fans, lot of similarities to Berserk with the tragic hero etc. Although bit more comedy on the side.
I am so so so so so freakin happy that another chapter of Berserk is out. Every month or so I contemplate why Miura hates me so much. He has built such a fantastic world and story, I wish he was more like Kishi and rushing to tie everything together.
I love this flashback shit, would not mind for it to go on for a year or two. Personally I feel Berserk lost a bit of it's awesome when Gatts got the Berserker armor. It's not him that's ridiculously overpowered anymore, it's some epic loot magic armor. :/
I'm glad he's picking up pace, but we've been waiting so long for Guts & his party to reach the Elfhelm, it's kinda disappointing he's doing a background story. T_T
I actually really like the background story it's a nice change from the whole being bathed in evil 24/7 thing. It's awesome but it was taking a toll on me as much as it was on Guts.

Guts is about to get to the elf island and people are complaining a flashback about elves is irrelevant? People need to have more faith in Miura. well we're better off with an elf than with something else, there aren't many good forces in this world. And given how we just had 3 chapters on how guts was once saved by an elf it sort of makes sense. Still I hope we don't have too much elf/mermaid talk and more of guts' story in the upcoming chapters, that one allusion to the eclipse was worth more than farnese's whole character to me

This elf explanation doesn't make sense to me though. I thought the kid was a portion of Casca's deformed child, though I suppose that's Griffith's body now. Poor Casca, still makes me angry. They had something beautiful.
Schreike doesn't even know that Guts and Casca had a child, so she jumps to conclusions. It has been pretty solidified that the child is in fact Casca's and Guts' ( it is very attracted to them, and appeared when Griffith started using its body ).

but thank you for giving me an estimate cause I've been checking twice or three times a day for the damn thing lol
I think that some creators feed off of the positive energy of their readers in a positive way. Meaning they strive to work on their manga and finish it because they have this productive symbiotic relationship with their fans. I've always felt like Miura has the opposite. The more the fans enjoy his manga and the more they want it, the more he seems to feel it necessary for him to not make it.
Or perhaps it's a sign of how big he's gotten and how significant Berserk is, since I can't imagine in the US who made comic books being this late with their work and this inconsistent and still being employed.

So I've watched the Golden Age Arc II movie already and saw that the third installment was coming out in winter. That made me curious, so I went to the wiki page and see that it's release is slated for Feb 1. The one that just came out was released way back in June in Japan, does this mean there's no way we'll be seeing the 3rd one before summer at the earliest?
Sorry for the bump, but I'm just curious of how everyone's experience in collecting the manga has been?
For example: I find myself constantly looking for book stores that carry them.
So Far I've managed to get volumes 1-2-3-18-31-34-36 brand new and -4- used. (all different stores...)
but the struggle is relentless. Brand new I'm paying around $16 in Canada, used is about $7 but that is even harder to acquire and the pages are typically yellowed. got lucky with boxing day sales and found 2 copies today, 18-31 for about $12 each.
My problem is that I don't have a credit card and can't order online so I feel the difficulty of this quest will be outstanding.
Another issue is that I have access to after the Golden Age arc in small diluted segments right before me....
The show got me interested and now with the movie releases I am ever invoked to it's brilliance.

Picked up the first issue at a swapshop in town for something to read on the ride home. Was very impressed. Had heard about it through other forums and such, had 0 idea of what the plot was about or who the characters where. Enjoyed it immensly.

the 1st 3 volumes of the manga are almost like prototypes compared to rest of the series, at middle of the third volume the art improves so much it almost feels like its a completely different manga. It's just so strange everything changes literally in just a different page D:
Sorry for bumping again but I think everyone here should check out the thread I made for Reddit.
I pose an interesting concept to any Berserk fans and have even got started on an intro for my Idea, just as a short concept of how simple yet entertaining it could actually be, and how it could pose yet another method for people to be introduced to the greatness Kentaro has given us...

I would like to say thank you, thanks to this post ive finally decided to pick up Berserk. I knew Berserk since a long time but was lazy to see how it was, ppl would always say how badass the "guy" was and i finally understand it now, yep i get it now. Been reading the manga non-stop.

I literally spend 15 hours this Christmas break watching the Anime Series and then going back and reading all 37 Volumes.
It was one of the most epic days of my life.
I'm dying for someone to point me to a similarly incredible Manga series.
It's hard to match Berserk. Especially, as I'm guessing you want something a tad more mature and complex in story than your run-of-the-mill anime. So:
Monster: I always try to mention this one as I feel it's incredibly underrated. It's basically a psychological-thriller about a Japanese Doctor in Germany who inadvertently saves the life of a serial killer. It's a pretty long series both in manga and anime (74 eps). Though my main criticism with it is that it feels overly melodramatic at times and a lot of it could have been compressed into a more succinct series.
Claymore: Bit more like Berserk, though as time goes on the story kind of loses its luster and starts to acquire that JRPG feel to it. Kind of like Inuyasha, but it doesn't suck ass. Still a good series overall.
Shiguri: Personally, I didn't like this one at all but I can see how others might. I love a gory and dark anime but this one just feels way too gratuitous in that regard to the point where I have a hard time taking it seriously. Somewhat boring at times as well.
Ghost in the shell: You're probably familiar with this one, lol. If not, what the hell are you doing here? Go watch/read now!
Black Lagoon: Love this one. It's very similar to Cowboy Bebop, though not in the future and not quite as good. It is however, full of humor and much darker.
I would recommend Shingeki no Kyoijn. Great story, great characters (although the author isn't afraid to murder them lol), the right amount of gore to make the world seem really fucked up in the good way.

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants.
Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.
Nominated for the 4th Manga Taisho Awards (2011) and winner of the 35th annual Kodansha Manga award for Best Shounen, Nominated for the 16th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize (2012)
It also gets an anime this spring, which hopefully isn't censored too much:
Other recommendations: Vinland Saga, Historie, Dorohedoro, Vagabond and Tower of God (ToG is not as mature and a bit more comedy, but still a great read).

2 years ago, I spent a couple of days in the winter holidays carefully reading Berserk in a dark room while listening to the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. Somehow, I thought that would be epic. I was spot on!
It's a pity this author takes such long breaks. Damn shame. Also, when you read Berserk, you realize the potential manga has, and it's just too bad other material of this quality can't be found!
I will look over some of the suggestions above in time, but I am familiar with Gantz, and that is crap!
I would recommend Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal (4 episodes), I don't know if it exists in the manga since I haven't read it :p, but this one kind of catches the vibe of Berserk, the closest thing I have come across anyway.
It is very good, up there with Berserk in my opinion.
On January 03 2013 04:51 Erasme wrote: Gantz is nowhere similar. Maybe the first books but then gantz become shit
Gantz isn't really similar, but I still think it's awesome. It picks up after the Buddhist Temple mission and is amazing up until part 3 which is stretched a ton, but still fairly good.
Read Vinland Saga! I've recommended it to quite a few of my friends who've enjoyed Berserk and they've all loved it. The drawings are top notch and the fights are great! Also, it's about Vikings, how can you go wrong with that? + Show Spoiler +

Oh snap, this was one of my favorite books when I was still into manga(i'd say it's top 3 next to Planetes and 20th century boys). The imagery of this series is so unique and creepy. It's a shame that the story kinda goes down the drain when they introduced the midget fairy.
Honestly I dont know where this is going, its kind of stale but now we get to see how "Falconia", Griffiths new land and castle is shaped up. Has he gone good all of a sudden or was he good all along but went evil for some time and made sacrifices and killed people to be able to be good and make a peaceful, prosperous land later?
I dont know but I think (or atleast hope) he is evil so he get to be that final boss in the end. Would be pretty anticlimatic if he is "good", WTF would Gatts do then? Probably go all emo and dont know what to do and that would be so lame.

well arguably it was more of the skull knight's doing when he tried to kill griffith with his sword made of beherits was it intentional? and was it the beginning of the age of darkness as in the prophecy?

or another unforseen event in the causality ? :p I guess we'll just have to wait until we see the elf king who is a confirmed "good guy"

Claymore, at least at first, has a very similar vibe to Berserk. But the anime didn't really followed the manga past the beggining.
Also, someone already recommended the ongoing manga Shingeki no Kyojin. Very similar in it's horror, brutality and overall sense of despair.

King Gaiseric aka Skull Knight came and saved him before it occured.

or another unforseen event in the causality ? :p I guess we'll just have to wait until we see the elf king who is a confirmed "good guy"
Griffiths existance in the world is pulling it closer to the astral plane, shit like trolls have been apearing long before the emperor dude
and if yo think Griffith is going to be a kind king have a good long talk with witch girls dead master
Well the only thing we know about griffith is that he always wanted a kingdom of his own. we readers will always stand by guts because we have seen some shit, but what of the other humans who are given protection and much more? Even rickert seems to be having second thoughts now... Also don't forget that gut's and casca's child seems to be having some influence over griffith since he's part of him
the only humans given protection are those in falconia, the rest of the humanity is getting decimated by monsters that are only around becuase Griffith wanted a material body the god hand are too powerful to exist on the material plane without completely screwing everything up
also you ahve it backwards, Guts and Cascas child (if it is Guts child) does not have an effect on Griffith, it was Griffith raping casca that made the baby an evil grotesque abomination
yeah we are aware of that, but is it the case for the new band of the hawk (the human ones at least)? when guts will be coming to take griffith's head don't you think people will try to stop him? that's what makes berserk so good, while guts is seen as a bad guy by most people he can't really be blamed for anything and the exact opposite is true for griffith. And as I said, we readers have developed the same hatred guts has towards griffith to a point that nothing can redeem him, to a point that everyone's else opinion of the white hawk is irrelevant.

Spoiler free summary hidden behind a spoiler tag: + Show Spoiler +

Other recommendations: Vinland Saga, Historie, Dorohedoro, Vagabond and Tower of God (ToG is not as mature and a bit more comedy, but still a great read).
Hey thanks for Shingeki no Kyojin recommendation, only had time to read a couple chapters but seems awesome so far. Was wondering how I've managed to miss this gem but I blame the shounen tag as I've just sticked with seinen mangas for the past few years.
On topic Elfhelm @ 2014...
And yeah the moment I saw the massive fortress where Griffith was gathering people I couldn't think of anything but some kind of massive massacre/sacrifice party.

I dont know but I think (or atleast hope) he is evil so he get to be that final boss in the end. Would be pretty anticlimatic if he is "good", WTF would Gatts do then? Probably go all emo and dont know what to do and that would be so lame.
dont forget that the whole reasont aht people are swarming to falconia as refugees is because Griffiths arrival in the world released all those monsters so at best hes cleaning up his own mess
well arguably it was more of the skull knight's doing when he tried to kill griffith with his sword made of beherits was it intentional? and was it the beginning of the age of darkness as in the prophecy?

if you remember during the tower arc, the weird behelit apostle swallowed gut's child and in turn was used to give birth to griffith's body
hard to say if people will try to stop him griffith might have grown bored of the whole nice king bit and try out a kingdom of darkness
he might even be gathering all these people to turn them all into monsters
Griffith is (probably) playing nice for now but hes not who he once was to use a claymore term Griffith has awakened hes a god hand now and hes as likely to grow bored and slaughter all the people in falconia as he is to keep sheltering them
speaking of this series, did any1 ever play Sword of the Berserk on dreamcast? That was my initial introduction to the series and while the story in that game has nothing to do w/ the main plot, it still retains that creepy atmosphere or destiny the main story has. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_the_Berserk:_Guts'_Rage
oh yeah, gameplay wasn't bad and the storyline was interesting great game but most certainly not the best dreamcast, hack & slash or even berserk game!
Ladies and gents, I present to you berserk on ps2
you have to import it from japan though but i'm sure it's worth it :p

How many puppies need to be sacrificed to create a new chapter? We'll get it done.
To give this post some real meat, I'll give a short review (note, some spoilers ahead):
As a recent first time reader of Berserk, it's quite odd. The Golden Age arc is so awesome and the anime definitely got it right in focusing on that arc. The anime did an amazing job (and is the way I originally got into the series) even if it didn't fully do the arc justice. The series continues reasonably well through The Conviction arc, but definitely has some low points where it doesn't quite feel like Berserk.
By the time we get into the Hawk of the Millennium Empire arc, the whole thing really feels different. Once Guts creates his little band of heroes, it feel like an edgy Inuyasha rather than Berserk. We do get an occasional reminder that we're still reading Berserk, but it's only fleeting reminders and the Fantasia arc doesn't seem to be making any improvements. If anything, it's feeling more and more like a typical Heroes vs Demons manga and that's not what I originally came for.
It's still not bad and I'll keep reading until the series is over (will need life extension technology); however, I don't impatiently wait for the next release like I would have during earlier arcs.
I kind of wish the entire series started with the Golden Age arc and then extended the time that Guts left the Band of the Hawk where he would start to get into the battle against demons. And then we end the series, one way or another, during Griffith's attempt to ascend.

once Casca reenters the story and Guts become more human and more about protecting then massacring the story lost alot of what set it apart
The series is only around 2/3's done, so there's a lot of progress to be made to round out the story. I don't really mind the fantastical elements introduced now, you have to remember that it's Berserk. If you feel like it's getting a bit too lighthearted or comfortable in its new skin, you're probably about to have another + Show Spoiler +

I don't know that that's the reason for the my different feeling. My favorite arc was the Golden Age arc where Guts was the most human. When he stood against 100 men to protect Casca, it was one of many high points in the series. He was also at his most vulnerable during that arc, where just overhearing Griffith say that his soldiers are not his friends had a major effect on Guts.
I think my issue with Berserk is how magical the world became. The Golden Age was almost realistic, but very dark with some demonic undertones. The whole series was about humans and their frailties, even for Guts and Griffith who both seemed nearly invulnerable in some ways. Then the whole series shifts to Guts vs Demons. Even then, at first there's the constant wimpy demonic harassment which is more psychological than physical and then big boss demons that Guts needs to push himself to his limits to overcome while being unable to save anyone around him. It was still about humans and their frailties. However, the further we get, the more it becomes about legions of demons all over the place and Guts just crushing through along with his band of magical heroes. Even the biggest baddies don't seem scary anymore because the series switched tone as magic spread far and wide and the series became less human. Gut's emotions for Casca almost seem out of place by this point (and that's probably what you're noticing) whereas the exact same feelings would have fit in perfectly during the Golden Age.

Because Guts must improve a lot and has to beat a lot of insane opponent before reaching Griffith, If I had to put an estimation I'd say the serie is 1/2's done xd.
how about guts uses the power of the his armor? ...like learning how to controll it and "together" they become an unbeatable "demon"

He'll be killed by Griffith, Shierke and Isidro last bastion of resistance. Erhm, maybe not, but even if Berserk isn't as depressive as before, it will not end well.
And i have this feeling, the further the story goes, the longer it takes for the next manga. (or germany was somehow behind and therefor 1-2 mangas per year)
..and people are saying song of ice and fire takes long for each book >.>
Yeah we waited for more than 1,5 years for the volume 36. I heard that Miura was very involved in the Berserk OAVs, and that henceforth he'll focus more on the manga. I hope it's true.

to be honest I dont think the manga will reach its finish before he dies, I hope it does but I doubt it will each release feels slower then the one before
Wait, Miura is like... 47 or something now? If anything, I doubt death is the thing that will prevent him from finishing this manga. He could still have another 50 years to go. I just think it's abit early to (sometimes jokingly) start bringing his age into this. 47 is still pretty young. Not that I can imagine an old man working on his manga, but on the other hand, why not? Let's say he needs another 15 years to finish this manga, he'll be 62 then. I have a 65yr old grandma that still plays tennis every week.
Just sayin'.
EDIT : also, don't assume he'll keep up the slow pace it is going at right now. Didn't people say he was working on the anime? Cmon guys, some of you just live to complain don't you?
for one thing i like the slow pace: for how incredible long he is working on it and the total time of finishing it.
i mean, harry potter was like 10 years, so was friends, and people were saying how they enjoyed it, having something they like follows them for such long time. and berserk seems to go full lifetime mode. its just insane, after more than 20 years its still running, and no end in sight
I want guts to sacrifice every single one of his companions, become a demon and kill grifith. Sadly, if there are 200 chapters left and we get ~5 releases per year then it's going to take another 40 years.
So, my friend told me that Kentaro Miura has been hospitalized from a heart attack or something. Not sure how legit it is, he says his source got it from some Japanese site. Anyone know anything about this?
Basically draw a line, with the first point being the current status of Gutts and crew, the second point being Gutts killing Griffin and probably dying as well, and in between those points, create as many twists/tragedies/gut-wrenching stories about each character (killing them off one by one except maybe Casca).
Such a brilliant manga to end that way. In any case, Miura has already outdone himself with what he's written. I just hope this arc gets finished, because I like how he's setting up Griffin as some kind of anti-christ.

What's it been like over a year?! Finally looking to focus on Falconia? No more stupid god damn zombie pirates? Possible Griffith on the throne next chapter? Possible conversation with Rickert..Luca. Is. Back..?
I just hope that for some reason Rickert does not get caught up in the radiant bullshit that is Griffith, but then again if the fucking Emperor Ganishka could fall for the his godliness at the very sight of him(which is why he turned to mist), I don't know if Rickert will manage.

Griffith is now the most OP final boss ever. His crew of monsters is serious as all shit, and I have no idea how Gatsu has a chance of winning a PR campaign to recruit allies against what everyone perceives to be a messiah figure.
I hope Rickert isn't seduced into joining the Band of the Hawk 2.0, though it looks like a very real possibility.

Haha. Berserk is a labour of love. Miura is only 47. He has plenty of time. Stan Lee is still going strong. and he's almost twice Miura's age.
I don't think I can stomach another Golden Age arc, that by far was the most horrifying hell on earth sequence I've ever endured. I'm never reading that part again, hope the rest of the manga isn't like this...
wow finally... But for nothing of importance to happen. This has always been the pace though, its just that nothing has happened that resembles the old berserk that kept me hooked. Gutts traveling with a bunch of 9 year olds really don't help the case, even if it tries to build up for something important. IDK, I really dont have a clue how they'll finish this.

What arcs do you like if you don't like the Golden Age arc? To me, it's seems like that arc pretty much IS the manga, at least so far. Not much of significance has happened outside of that arc.

I think he meant that this part was too hardcore for him.
How does one enjoy seeing good people suffer/die? I don't.
Pretty much everyone succumbed to horrid ways to advance the development of the 3 main characters. Guts made it out of that tragedy at way too much of a cost, I just hope the payoff is worth it when pretty boy gets his just desserts (which I'm assuming is still a long ways off).
Of course if Griffith somehow "wins," that would irk me to no end and I would have followed Guts' struggle for nothing. It'll be like watching Hamlet die without getting his revenge (would make a shit story).
I've read more of the manga and it looks like Guts has made new allies, each with their own unique powers. Things have finally settled down and the manga is starting to resemble more a standard shonen, which I'm perfectly fine with, as long as Miura doesn't kill off his party (and I'm willing to bet he's reluctant to do so since they have a thorough backstory as well, which I've enjoyed following so far).
By now everyone should know what Guts is about without the need to kill off more of his friends. Baddies like Griffith still need to die though, painfully.

i could see the final arc them assaulting Griffiths castle and them slowly bleeding off members to slow down Griffiths troops and then Guts gets to Griffith who decides to fight him as a human to settle the score since there tied 1/1 and it ending with just everyone pretty much dieing
Honestly the best ending would be guts sacrificing all of his new companions to become a demon powerful enough to kill grifith. Have the ending be "everyone dies" except for guts who becomes the world's boogeyman.

That would be the worst ending, because it would turn out that Guts is no better than Griffith. Griffith did that EXACT same thing in order to become who he is right now, he sacrificed everyone of his companions.
That's the point. Berserk is not a manga that should have a happy ending or even a happy anything for that matter. It's a senin about corruption and the cruelty of man. The current arc has way too much flowery goodness as is. I wouldn't be surprised if some characters got killed off soon just for that very reason.

Guts isnt someone who gets close to people or make any promises, people are following him of there own will with no promises from him
the old guts at least would easily leave them behind to kill Griffith
On July 29 2014 02:32 Hyperbola wrote: That's the point. Berserk is not a manga that should have a happy ending or even a happy anything for that matter. It's a senin about corruption and the cruelty of man. The current arc has way too much flowery goodness as is. I wouldn't be surprised if some characters got killed off soon just for that very reason.
I thought it was pretty well-established that the current arc's happiness is just a facade? Like the appeal of this manga for me at this point is how Guts is going to resolve his beef with Griffith. Griffith made the transformation of the world much more suitable for humans and pretty much is beloved by everyone with the exception of maybe that young knight (friends with the young seer), now the question is whether Griffith is going to reveal his wickedness and public opinion goes against him so Guts can actually go against without being viewed as a devil. That's something I look forward to resolving....in 20 years...
(The fact that this manga started in late 80s is both incredible and fucking terrifying for the readers).
I could sort of picture Guts charging at Griffith in rage leaving his companions to be devoured by demons but I just couldn't see Guts sacrificing them just to gain demonic powers himself.
Also fuck these bumps when there's no new chapter.
I say after the author dies, we dissect his noggin to get a glimpse of that genius of his that must be stored in there. I may not have waited 20 years like some people, but I sure as hell did wait 9 lol.

Sorry, just wanted to get some discussion rolling. Initially, I actually looked up what people said about Gigantomakhia but apparently no one has written any reviews, or anything which might resemble that, yet.
Wondered whether I should read that but this here has me somewhat scared:
this is pretty bad we have lolis who offers to pee on a grown mans face and to show him her genitalia we have boob-shaped sand dunes we have a big angry ugly black man who punch things and we have the japanproxy who are the only ones who can use typical grappler moves "honorable martial arts that impress everyone"
so in other words its a typical racist, pedo, sexual crapfest that i thought it was going to be the art style is ok if you like berserk

I suppose so. In one interview he said that the Golden Age arc wasn't good and that what he currently writes is better than this.
Sorry for bump but I just read this incredible manga to the current chapter and just wanted to say this is fucking amazing might even be #1 manga for me top most certain hooooly crap. Guts>all Now the pain of waiting starts for me too :/

There is supposedly a new chapter out soon, and you got my hope high for nothing when I saw the thread bumped
I thought we were back do getting "regularish" chapters now?
Honestly for me Berserk is the greatest manga ever written. There is not even a close second comer to this manga. I just hope Miura gets his motivation back so he finishes it because i doubt we are close to half way through. Doubt it will happen though given his age and the problems he's admitted to having with the story line.
I wasn't sure if there were apostles in there or if it was only monsters. I can recognize an ogre when I see it, but recently (ahem), some apostles were sort of not that bad to the eyes. I think of the Dragon one, the Archer or the Lancer.

He's only 47.
he's only been drawing it for the past 24 years or so, and i believe we're only somewhat just past the halfway mark. he'll be drawing this til he's at least 70
I just recently finished reading all those chapters, it was a amazing ride :D
I'm not much into the mediavel mangas but this one of my favourite mangas for sure, amazing art and characters.. They are all so flawed and yet so compelling.. this would be a excelent movie imo
Does anyone know anything about this? will new chapters come out?
I'm so confused at this point. Griffith is a demon but he's using his power to save humans from certain death. Is he trying to do good or be adored or what? Anyone have any ideas?

Some people speculate that he may be gathering people there to sacrifice them all together or something similar. I have no idea but this manga is becoming like an ex girlfriend - for a bit you hope she comes back but when nothing happen for months, then you stop caring

Griffith wanted to be a savior, he sold his soul to the demons but this is still his objective. So, his band had to die for him to be successful. Is he a good guy who used awful ways of achieving his goals (like back in the golden era), or is he a demon that seeks to sacrifice everyone is anyone's guess now.
Well, he got pretty far sacrificing the band of the hawk (or falcon i dunno wtf translations) so maybe he wants to try sacrificing EVERYONE as they all adore him so he can climb to that fucking imaginary castle or w/e he saw in the sky (i mean his vision/goal/w/e). And maybe people have to be on his dick for him to sacrifice them.
Maybe he still hasn't reached it. Just a wild speculation.

the only reason there is a threat that they need to be saved from isbecause Griffith is in the world, the only thing he saved them from was the other kingdom his presence is allowing all those monsters to apear
and yes he wants to be worshipped, he wants to be king

I think you hit the nail on the head there. What Griffith wants is for people to dick ride him all the way to his fucking castle. It all makes sense within the context of the story now that I think about it.
Be honest, if you were in Griffith's position (broken dreams, broken body) and you had your dreams dangling right in front of you then you would do the same exact thing.

i dunno if id we willing to kill everyone i know for such a hollow ending, sure hes king but how could he not be with the power he got? he didnt need to actually work for it it was basically gifted to him
besides even if we cant say that we would have chosen differently doesnt mean we cant damn the choice or the death hes brought afterwards

I never thought of it like this But in all honesty, no. I wouldn't even think of it
Don't forget he also believes his dream is what's in the best interest of humanity.
Since he want to unite everything under him and then only those worthy will survive, meaning, all the apostles and "monsters" will have to die atleast all of the non-allies!

he doesnt care about humanity, his actions are directly putting humanity in threat of going extinct, he simply wants to be the king of a country and damn the consequences no matter how many corpses he has to pile up to do so
I agree with Shell, it's a possibility that the first Band of the Hawks was sacrified so he can actually save humanity. And that would be way more interesting than him just being a bad guy and Guts the good one.

his very presence in the world is unleashing the monsters he is "saving them" from his arrival in the world at that tower caused plenty of casualties
Griffith cares about noone but himself hed let every single person in falconia die if that would put him closer
as soon as he gets crowned King hed probably grow bored of playing house and either march on the world or kill off his people
and if we was so noble, why kill the old witch who was remaining a bystander?
The monsters were born when the Emperor Ganishka was killed by the Sword of Resonance. If anything, his presence keeps the apostles in check, at least for now. Sure, it can be a way to sacrify everyone in the long run, but I don't really see the point of sacrifying everyone if not for a second ascent, and I don't see why he'd want a second ascent since he can already kill anyone if he really wants to.
I never said Griffith isn't selfish, his own selfishness brang the end of the first Band of the Hawk for his own good. But once again, I don't know why it would put him closer from his goal to kill more people, considering he's actually "living" his dream, right now.
And he's clearly not noble, did you even read the Golden Era? He showed how far he was able to go for his dreams.
The only one that would want to kill everyone is Femto, not Griffith, like BLinD-RawR said, and I'm not sure if there is a duality there, we'll see in the future. He seemed to have accepted the atrocities he commited for what he thinks is the greater good.
I never said he is noble, i just think his biggest motivation is not just having a big castle and die of old age!
He wants to be a god for humans, the saviour of all humanity.
Lysteria you said it right, he has a dream but his dream is not to rule over nothing, he wants to rule them all, rule them wisely, be fair..
This manga is a complicated subject, the motivations of our characters and a mist of very deep feelings.. he had nothing and he wants it all but not just money or power..
True, but Griffith is also ambitious, and not likely to be content with what he gets once he achieves his goal. He may well have decided that ruling an empire of men is now too small a goal, and may want to become a god on an even higher level. Gathering all the people for another sacrifice might just what he needs to take that next step up the ladder.

the God hand are not supposed to be in the world, the chick said that with his birth the 2 worlds are coming closer hes the reason all the monsters are coming into existance
he hasnt achieved his dream yet, hes not king, the question is what happens after he is king and has no need for the people anymore

Femto was the goal of the God Hands, of course. Now that he's alive, the two worlds will become closer and closer, but that's basically not a problem for those in Falconia, because all of the strong apostles are under his command. If some just tag along because he's fucking Griffith and that means a lot of battle (Todd, or that huge dragon dude), some others seem to really think they can live with humans, like that archer.
The thing with Griffith, is that he just never changed since the beginning of the manga. He never became a bad guy, he's exactly how he was at the start. He considers everyone on his way to be King/Emperor as either tools or enemies. When he became Femto, there was absolutely no change in his character. Instead of sacrifying nobles we didn't care about, he sacrified all those characters we learned to love for 10 volumes, and considering we're following Guts, of course that seems like a change.
His goal is to be the ruler, as a King or as a God, I don't think that really matters. And to achieve that, he needs people following him. All those people in Falconia are now considered tools by him, and I can totally see him protecting them from the merging of the two worlds, even though he's more or less responsible for it. Because if he doesn't, well, he's gonna be the King/God of no one.
And for the bored part you talked about last time, basically each and every God Hand is bored and try to create some action from time to time to humans, and even still they don't try to eradicate all the humans. If you are bored being a King, you're gonna be fucking bored to hell when all humans will be dead. If you want to stay occupied, you need toys to play with.

Answer, what Kings normally do. They rule? Because he's now basically a God doesn't mean he has to always think of something new to do. He can just rule for whatever number of years/centuries he wants and then disappear and become a legend that will have forged the core of the human race for the future.
There are soooo many possibilities that don't include "killing everyone because I'm the main bad guy of the story".

I don't see the problem with Rickert, the story is progressing way faster with him than it was with Guts and the Sea God thing for ten times the amount of chapter. And Silat is finally doing something, so pretty interesting in my book.

Because it's not progressing at all with Guts. Eventually, at some point, he will hit the elven coast and his part of the story will progress, but Silat is a side character with something going on with him for a long time, and that's nice to have him move his pieces slowly against Griffith. Rickert is just a way to help Griffith's part of the story going faster, while keeping a link with Guts.
The only interesting part of Guts' plot right now is the fact he's gathering allies.

Griffith is only relevant to the story because hes the "final boss" he doesnt have a story anymore, he sold his story to become a godhand and just became a villain the only story he has after that is his part in the storys of those who foil him
So you just want him to become a villain without anything around him, okay I understand why you think those chapters are useless then. I disagree 100% about it, but I understand.

weve already seen enough of him as he took down the other evil dudes i dont get why we need to see more of it now
Because him taking down the Emperor wasn't the most important part, at least when it comes to Guts, later. On the other hand, we can catch a glimpse at how Falconia is working and how this is going to be a haven for humanity against the monsters. The fact Griffith is the one responsible for the merger of the two worlds isn't the problem, but if he's to be taken down by Guts, all those humans under Griffith's protection will become free targets. Rickert recognizes this, but still can't accept the fact this haven was built on his comrades' corpses.

remove him and the monsters stop being a problem, eventually Griffith will just get bored by playing nice and then what?
And then we get back to that conversation a while back where we already disagreed about Griffith's goal. Remove Griffith and the two worlds are still merged, plus all the strong monsters in check by him are free to act like actual monsters.

remove him and they start un-merging again, as long as hes around the problem will only continue escalating until even falconia is just a nest of monsters

Source?
the worlds had already been unmerging, which is why the fairies were turning into just myth, Griffiths presence reversed that and caused them to come closer, if he leaves it will go back to how it was with magical creatures apearing less and less fequently
I think it's only the first two layers that merged. Griffith is only in the physical world because he gave himself a physical vessel. The other God Hand are still stuck in the other layers.
I was asking for a link about Griffith being responsible for the merging, and the fact his death will lead to the unmerging, because as far as I am concerned, Erasme is right, the two worlds are one, and Griffith isn't really the one responsible, it was the sword of dimension slashing Ganisha.
About Slan, the succubus, she could manifest in the old forest mostly because there was a leak (sort of?) allowing her to go through using bowels as a catalyst. Griffith is a more complicated case, it's a possibility that his physical entity right now is a temporary one like Slan in the forest, just more stable. Meaning you could destroy his presense in the real world, but not his existence as a God Hand. Everything is speculation about that part tho. That's why, if you've got real information about it, I'm interested, Forikorder.
And thanks for the pic, Hyperbola, I somehow lost it a while ago.

just keep reading from where i linked until she apears then im pretty sure the skeleton dude (or someone at least) specifically points out that shit is materializing faster cause shes there
this shit gets talked about in small bits here and there from meeting the little witch to the latest chapter so unless you want me to basically re-read berserk just to point out waht you should know i dont understand what you want me to do
Griffith is too powerful, hes not supposed to even be in the world in his true form he should be limited like the succubus chick but he was truly born in the world with all his power its influencing things and creating paths for the creatures from the underworld to invade
thats why all of a sudden the entire world is full of monsters and shit like the Sea God are now waking up

Backup author? I hope this doesn't change the style and tone.
I hope he does. I hope he changes Berserk back to what it was originally: a dark, fucked up fantasy. Nowadays it's literally about cute girls doing cute things. They've been on a boat for longer than some of the readers of Berserk been alive. Guts doesn't seem nearly as vengeful and beastly anymore. Berserk has been pussified.
Rickert is already pretty much developped, he's just not going to be one of those warriors like Guts. Probably more of a leader or something. Sure he could have more development, but at this point, it's not required, we got all the informations we need.
Silat on the other hand, the few things we learnt brings even more questions!
Silat isn't really that interesting, he seems like a shallow plot device to me, the eyes through which we got to see the demon king's secrets.
I mean look at his story so far: first he pledges the Baakiraka to the king of midland to save his people. Then he pledges it to the actual demon king because "anything to save muh people!". Now he balks at pledging to Griffith just because he's not human, despite falconia basically being paradise.
Guess we need his shallow perspective again as we leave falconia.
edit: on the subject of Berserk being bright and sparkly and full of smiling girls these days; seems alot like smoke in mirrors to me. Destruction is only fun if there's something to be destroyed, and this is probably just buildup for that moment. Possibly along with some classic japanese moral dilemma about the value of a beautiful lie versus the grim reality.

I don't think it's quite so cut and dry with Griffith. It never is in manga, there's always gotta be some moral quandry, and this time it's the fact that Griffith sacrificed the hawks to "save midland".
From what I'm reading, as it stands, Gatts is the "principle" of the matter, whereas Griffith is the "greater good", or "end justifies the means".

except he doesnt care about saving midland, it wasnt even in danger when he made the deal

It's pretty cut and dry. You can't sell a story that simply doesn't exist. Midland didn't need saving, till griffith was the cause of it needing saving. Not everything has to be a shade of gray.
I believe midland got invaded by the Kusharn entirely without Griffiths involvement. And the fact remains that the only thing keeping the people safe right now is Griffith, his own doing or no.
Remember that speech sonia made before the fight against the reincarnated Ganishka? There are shades of gray.
Not only Midland was on the verge of being invaded by the Kusharn, but they were all split up before Griffith joined them. Midland would have been either a wasteland or a slave state without him.
Something you guys are forgetting is that Midland isn't the only player here. All of humanity is now in danger because of Griffith's changing of the world. The only people left alive are those who have bound themselves under Griffith's rule. The people don't know this, so they see Griffith of the savior from the evil beasts who have suddenly arisen in the land. But creating a situation where anyone outside your control ends up dead is not generally accepted as "good".
On the other hand, the moral quandary is there for sure, because for those under his rule, Griffith is as kind and benevolent as anyone, and their quality of life is many multiples better than what it was before he ruled. And Gatts is far from the principled avenger, he is mainly focused on revenge because of the death of his comrades and the rape of Casca, the principles of justice and the problems of humanity as a whole are the last things on his mind. Gatts surely fights with the attitude of the ends justify the means, and has had no problem causing collateral damage on his quest to destroy evil.

I don't know about that. I've read the manga several times and from what I understand the merging of the worlds was due to the skull knight's sword, not Griffith. Being able to see elves and stuff was explained by "believing in them", and the reason fantastical creatures were seen less was because the onset of the church and their doctrines.

You never ever proved this and still you say that each time. The two realms fusionned because the Emperor Ganishka was slained by the sword of dimension of Skull Knight, Griffith was there to make sure it was going to happen. Remove him of the picture now, and that does not change the fact Ganishka was slained by the sword of dimension, no reason for the monsters to disappear, especially since they were here (even though only scarce) during the Golden Age arc.
So you are saying there has been no one who has been harmed by Gatts' actions when fighting demons?
purposely harmed by Gutts? no

It happened after Ganishka was slained by the sword of dimension, once again. And Griffith was more or less responsible for it, but that doesn't mean the fact he dies or anything will remove the monsters. Before the merging, only apostles were roaming.
Now we got not only apostles, but also monsters/legends coming from the second plane, and absolutely nothing in the manga says in any shape of form, that removing Griffith will stop the merging. If anything, Skull Knight or his sword could be the answer - and I doubt it.
You just jump from "Griffith is involved in this" to "if he's dead, problem solved".
And about Slan, she could enter the human place of existence because there was a weakness, and it was stopped because of the sword of dimension (or resonance) once again. You should start to see a pattern there.
There was a mention about the 5th God Hand being the first step to the worlds merging, not a lot of details about it, it could totally be baiting the sword of resonance to the right spot at the right time. And killing Griffith right now would only end his mortal vessel, Griffith right now is clearly not Femto, so if you kill his physical body, there are still 5 God Hands. Proof? Slan got kicked out badly and she just does not care. Griffith's body can't be his own body, it went from that frail body to Femto.

How about you acknowledge the fact that the worlds merged and became fantasia due to the skull knight? The tower didn't happen because of Griffith per se, it was because of eggman, possibly also due to two branded people being together.

On September 03 2015 06:31 Forikorder wrote: did you completely forget about the tower where normal humans became monsters jsut because they were near Griffith being birthed?
Once again, I'm not saying Griffith does not influence the world around him, just that two worlds have merged, and he's not the direct reason it happened, neither him being killed will change the fact the two worlds have merged. Plus as far as I know, the Griffith we got now influence the apostles around him by making them mostly tame. If he was to lose his human self, the lower apostles would be free to go on a rampage once again.
Basically we got 3 kind of "monsters". First, the apostles, and all they need is a beherit. Sure, those are probably put into the first realm by the God Hands, but it was done before Femto. Second, the legends and creatures from another realms, that would disappear by making the merging stop, if that is even possible. And finally, the presence of a God Hand, that makes temporary mutations and stuff, not necessarly for worse, like we're seeing in Falconia (opposed to the tower).
Two of them are independant from Griffith's presence.
That's why I say you're mostly wrong, you start from something right but use that to draw a conclusion that does not consider all the options.
So you are saying there has been no one who has been harmed by Gatts' actions when fighting demons?
purposely harmed by Gutts? no
[
Them being harmed unintentionally is basically the definition of collateral damage as stated in the original post. You guys really are being (intentionally?) dense about this.

The tower went crazy when gutts and caska stayed for too long, and when caska was in danger. Griffith had very little influence on anything happening there. The clerics became monsters cuz of the egg apostle. Griffith forced the new realm to happen, but he didn't do it. The other godhand appeared after the trolls went crazy. The worlds were already merging.

no they werent, the exact opposite WAS happening the worlds moving farther apart as belief in the other world disapeared
just having 2 branded people close to each other draws in a bunch of monsters because they exist between the 2 worlds, Griffith technically does too except hes far more in the other world then Guts and Casca
and if anyone thinks its pure coincidence that he was born at the tower then i cant even discuss this further, he WANTED to be there thats why he was there

How long until he grows bored once there isn't any human left? I guess once he'll be alone with apostles, he's gonna have a lot of fun times doing nothing, because that's clearly not boring. Plus, it would make Guts's job much easier if Griffith is an enemy of mankind.
Berserk would not be Berserk if Griffith is just an enemy and everyone cheers for Guts. I'd much prefer to see him struggle between his revenge and the greater good of mankind.
You didn't understand me forikorder, what I believe is that Griffith has done very little yet, however the circumstances, the causality, forced everyone to do stuff to help his situation Also noone said he was born at the tower by coincidence, stop imagining things when your points are wrong

An apostle can still use their Behelit even after becoming an apostle, remember the count who refused to sacrifice his daughter to live after Gatts had him almost dead?
I think there are clearly themes of fate in the manga, but also themes of sometimes being able to beat fate, or to change it because of human actions. The same to me is the Behelit, sure they are almost always subject to fate, but their power is not 100% absolute.

My god I just realize they probably going to spend a year trying to find the elf people and then do some side quest to cure his chocolate waifu.
Almost couldn't believe what I was seeing when Erika made her way from the protesting women at a brisk walking pace and actually made it all the way outside so that she could get caught.
What is this writing? It's like Berserk suddenly became Cartoon Network.
Little girl dies, Rickert becomes the new vengeful main character for the next 200 chapters and in 20 years (our time) he reunites with Guts to take on Griffith.
I hope the little girl dies. It was kind of dumb that she decided after watching for a while, to go ahead and pay a visit to a battlefield which I might add is currently on AFLAME. Was there even a reason she decided to go for a walk?

Agree, just bad writing IMO.*puts damsel in distress for plot without any explanation*
Huh...apparently this Black hair thingy was introduced a while back a few hundred chapter back. He was also one of griffith assassination squad leader or something like that. I just thought he was another random demon.
meh, berserk watered down & waters down immensly with every new chapter... wish kentaro would just put the manga back on guts storyline & finish with it, or it's gonna be another 20+ years.

Yeah, not enough rape and senseless murder. Berserk is turning into naruto.
I was stupid to believe that we were going to finally see guts chocolate waifu be cured soon and upon seeing that summer thing, it really hit me at how dumb i really was. Muira christmas present to his fan was the middle finger. At least we know when it coming out, unlike hunter x hunter.....hiatus for ages.

Hey guys we just tried to kill you all using a giant puppet filled with tortured souls burned alive because we hate everyone who isn't us, but of you can use magic so lets all be friends ok?
Also liked the explanations, but with enough cliff hanger to leave me eagerly awaiting the next update! Well, assuming there is one. Better to keep expectations low in this thread.
Guts is too mature and emotionally stable. There's literally zero conflict right now. The manga could just end right now and no one would notice. I hope Casca kills finally herself after regaining her memory. Maybe then we can get this series back on track.
It's a world building chapter. They're nice when you're marathoning a series to get a better perspective, but annoying when they come out once a month or slower.
Also, from your complaint in July, Guts brought a behelit to an island of sorcerers/witches. Sorcerers tend to be people who crave power. We already saw during the entrance to the island that they are quick to attack. Then the next chapter we get asked the question, is it Guts's behelit or is it meant for someone else and he's just carrying it? Then this chapter we got a lot of mystical creatures acting very strangely towards the newcomers, but put in their place by the witch who ended up being the elf king. And we finally saw a funny coup attempt by Puck.
What happens when a jealous or power hungry sorcerer steals the behelit and kills the elf king in a real coup attempt? The portal to hell is opened, corrupting the magical creatures, and all hell breaks loose on an island that is already pretty crazy. It's all being foreshadowed. To me, the only question is if the Elf King can heal Casca before it all happens (or does so with a dying breath) or if the attempt is a failure and more friends die with no Casca progress. Also, does the island end up as a hell hole or does Guts defeat enough of the monsters and return the island to peace under a different ruler or even save the Elf King?
I think next chapter we'll get a little more world building and some progress with the Casca plotline, but the chapter after that will be crazy.

My bet is Morda http://www.mangapanda.com/berserk/343/14 She ain't an apostle yet, but she's got some powerful magic and questionable ethics. She also says, "No matter how much we train and polish our skills we're still stuck in this damn island. We might as well be rotting away."
A little sleeping spell/potion on Guts to grab the behelit, and then it wouldn't be shocking that Morda kills the Elf King as her sacrifice to become an apostle. The Elf King's weakness would be a stab in the back by a friend. Morda becomes an apostle (probably one that is rotting for the irony). Becoming an apostle will wake Guts from his sleep, but everything will go to hell as the Elf King's magic is broken.
There's a lot of foreshadowing building up to this, even if some of my details are wrong.

you dont steal Behelits though if she was supposed to have it it would have fallen out of his pocket where she would find it, plus i dont think she even knows he has it
plus the sacrifice is supposed to be someone close, something real personal, the elf king would just be someone she knows not someone she deeply cares about, plus its questionable wether the god hands can even force the elf king into there realm and then kill her
i wouldnt be surprised if Griffith launchs an assault but i dont think its going to be like

She knows he has it. Gedfring (the first elder sorcerer they meet) called out Guts for having it, then when Guts showed it to the group, Puck took it and started playing with it and showing it off to all the witches. Most of them find it disgusting. Morda is sitting in the back seeming uninterested, yet we know she has a dream of getting off the island. http://www.mangapanda.com/berserk/345/10
Behelits will come to their owners possession any way they must. It's not all "oops, it fell" moments. The fact that Puck took it so easily from Guts points to it not being his. We also don't know the full relationship between Morda and the Elf King, but the chances of being a child saved from war/abuse by the elf king is high. The elf king could even be like a surrogate parent to her. There's a possibility for some expanding on that next chapter.
I may have to push back my "all hell breaks loose" chapter prediction by 1 because I do think the relationship between the apprentice witches and the elf king will have to be established for it to have meaning. Plus we have something for Casca (I hope) and I think all that will take at least two chapter. Then we have the betrayal.
Hyperbola, stories need tension and release and right now we're in the release. It can't try to be tense 100% of the time or it all turns to blandness. You need bad to have good, dark to have light, and calm to have chaos. This is the calm that will make the chaos all the more satisfying. I think this Island arc is going to be awesome when we re-read it in 5 years when it's done. It's just that the setup is painfully slow when we're reading it less than monthly.
And I should say that I'm only going over one possible future. Another possibility is that the 3 elder sorcerers that are not Gedfring could take the behelit to try to use it to stop the evil, but instead destroy everything. They're some creepy old dudes that presumably have a ton of power. Maybe they even sacrifice their own students, but Morda the rebellious one is able to battle them a little and gives Guts + friends a chance.
Whatever the case, Guts has brought the behelit, an agent of power and chaos, to a group of powerful magic users. He has unintentionally destroyed the peace of the island and nobody knows it yet. There is almost a 0% chance they leave the Island in the same condition as when they entered.
The fact that Puck took it so easily from Guts points to it not being his
the fact that Guts has a brand proves its not his, Guts is a sacrifice he cant be an apostle
seems like your just building assumptions on top of assumptions to even come close to making your theory realistic, just because she said one line doesnt mean she actually wants to leave the island that badly, and in the first place she could just join Guts group if she felt that strongly about it stealing the Behelit would be the plan B in this scenario
chibi witchs teacher mentioned the behelit was an item beyond absolutely anyones understanding or control so i really dont think its going to have a part to play unless Griffith launchs an assault i think there just going to solve the casca problem, one way or another, and then just leave
also dont forget there in a super safe zone thats even better then the mine casca stayed in that kept her safe, might not even be possible for the Behelit to activate there or for Griffith to send forces
On August 27 2016 06:27 Hyperbola wrote: Hopefully what y'all are saying will happen. A paradise like this does not belong in Berserk.
I don't get this perspective at all, but people keep saying it. Don't you remember the Golden Age arc? There were dozens of consecutive chapters where everything was perfect for Guts. They won every battle, he was getting close to Casca, Griffith was a rising star in the kingdom, he had the love of this friends and the respect of the whole kingdom, it was a close to paradise as he could possibly want. But then he lost it. That is what made the hell afterwards so poignant and powerful. Gore and mayhem are incredibly shallow compared to true loss. To keep the power in the story you need to show more loss, but Guts has already lost everything, so we need a time for him to get stuff back that he cares about. A peace, a break in the storm before we can move on.
I also predict that soon all hell will break lose again, but I'm not sure what form it will it take. It could also be that Casca is restored but then Griffith takes her or something like that. We also need more of Guts following the Skull Knight's footsteps somehow. I think perhaps his Behelit will be transformed into a weapon against the God Hand just like Skull Knight's.
Looks like Casca might actually get cured soon. By soon, I mean in 2 years. I am going to kind of miss mentally broken Casca. Her innocence really stands out considering how messed up everything is in the world. At the same time shit always happens because of how stupid she tends to act and how useless she is so I am glad that will probably change.
This year's 19th issue of Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine is announcing on Friday that Kentarou Miura's Berserk manga will go on hiatus until early 2017.
I don't think it will surprise anyone. Ch.347 will be the last one of the year
Well looks like they aren't going to cure Casca in time then. Got a feeling they are going to do some sort of quest to find stuff to cure her. But I do hope that next chapter we end off with her fixed and not being a completely useless and always causing problems

Not surprised, to be a true Berserk fan is to be a struggler. While I appreciate Miura's dedication to creating fantastic art, it does get in the way of getting new content published. Would be nice to see him follow the ONE (from One Punch Man) approach and go light on the detail while moving the writing forward but knowing his pride in his work, that's doubtful.
ONE releases like as much chapters as Miura per year though, when it comes to One Punch Man. But he is working on more than one project, like Mob Psycho 100, so...
in other news, young animal did an interview with miura and president of hakusensha/toriyama akira's former editor, and some interesting viewpoints were raised.
Oh my. Underestimating her inner throughts a bit there, guys.
That president has some rather old fashioned views on manga and editing. And he didn't want Griffith to go all evil god, which I myself thought was really interesting from a storytelling perspective.
Why do I even bother? This entire chapter was literally "lol you should totally read the next chapter" and "too bad it's in 2017" Fuck this manga. I hope Miura quits writing for good and this was the final chapter.

Lol dude what? Did you just start reading the manga or something? This is pretty standard pace since the last 20 years. If you don't like it then stop reading but no need to hate so hard. We're lucky they at least got into the dream state, could have just been a filler chapter of them talking about it.
About the hiatus, keep in mind that Miura likes to be very active part of all Berserk related projects so he's probably working on season 2 of the anime as well as the new game Tecmo is making. I'm sure we'll have some great chapters next year, can't wait.

He did write a new manga for a while. It was released last year or something and was called "Gigantomakhia" it was okay and I remember it because that was when berserk was on a huge hiatus and finding out that he was working on a side project sort of tilted me. Not sure I want him to work on another project, I am afraid the art will deteriorate if he works on a new project.
I'm glad we got a sorta-Berkserk-like chapter but it still feels like Miura is running on fumes. Last chapter we thought "now we'll see some serious shit" and now this chapter we saw some G-rated nightmare with another cliffhanger promising more down the line. I've seen enough Lost to know that when an episodic series is nothing but an advertisement for the next episode, the creators of the series have no real vision and are just taking people for a ride.
Praise his fucking ass, and also, hallelujah that this isn't turning out to be a slog of a new arc. So glad one of my favorite manga is back at least semi-regular publication.
Not sure I can read the next few chapters if it means having to relive that Casca shit though... some of the most brutal shit in manga history.

Still unsure if Neo-Miura can pull this off. He isn't the same writer/artist he used to be. I have a feeling this will be a kiddie friendly version of the eclipse. I hope I'm wrong though.

were not really gonna see the eclipse though, its going to be at most flashs of the eclipse and possibly only her emotions at the time of it since thats when she broke anyway
i think the focus is gonna be more on how those 2 react to the eclipse then showing us the eclipse all over again
yeah, 99% chance we're going to get the Griffith part except seen through Casca's eyes and GOD thinking about it just makes me want to punch Griffith SO BAD.
Damn. This chapter is like entirely made of symbolism used in classical art. As much as I dont want to remember The Eclipse, it calms me to see there wont be any NTR unless Miura is building up for massive curveball which I highly doubt given how consistent he has with sticking to foreshadowing and symbolism so far.
I'm starting to think who mini-Casca wants to talk to his actually herself (the last piece encapsulated in the sphere) or her child. Which leads me to believe the outcome will be one of three options:
If it's her child: she'll return hellbent on getting him/her back. If it's herself: she'll return hellbent on revenge or flat out refuse to return.
Either way it will not be what Guts wish for, exactly as Skull Bro's warning suggested. My guess is be she will return taking on Gut's original role as a hate and rage driven avenger.
Miura sure is dragging his feet. Now we gotta wait unit winter for the next one. To put that into perspective, we entered into Casca's dream last winter before the break happened. This means it took us literally a year in RL time to get from entering the dream to actually reaching the end. Except we don't even know if this last chapter will even be the end. We might have to wait until Summer 2018 just to see Casca turned back to somewhat normal. Perhaps we should all just be used to this by now.
I'm expecting a failure and the last piece being irretrievable or something. Having casca be a functioning member of the group would shake things up way too much.

When did you start reading Berserk? It's nothing new really. There has been 5-7 chapters a year for the last 6 years at least.

If it's her child: she'll return hellbent on getting him/her back. If it's herself: she'll return hellbent on revenge or flat out refuse to return.
Either way it will not be what Guts wish for, exactly as Skull Bro's warning suggested. My guess is be she will return taking on Gut's original role as a hate and rage driven avenger.
id really like for casca and other chick at least to be left on the island and just guts and other actual combat potential just go and strike at Falconia

Yeah. Given the level of detail plus he's working on the Grunbeld novel too I dont think it's surprised at all if anything I was surprised at how many/fast chapters we got this time.
I actually dont think the finale will be about the rape, the entire scene in the forest is already Casca trying to reject it plus her mind was probably already shutting down at that point in the Eclipse.
Judging from what is currently going on, is it safe to say that Casca is still torn between Guts and Griff from seeing them fighter each other? Or is that her fear of knowing that they will both eventually be forced to kill each other that is forcing her to be repress her memory

it's alot deeper than that. Her state was more or less resulted in being forced to accept rape, to the man she was in love with. For him to rape her, which is pretty disgusting way to treating a person who had affections for you to attack another fellow man, (no surprise due to japan) is mind blowing. All the while harboring feelings to a person who treated her right simultaneously attempting to come to grips with the other. it's pretty mind-shattering in that sense, and very believable.

I dont think she's torn between them at all. Her memories are all dark, torn, hostile and cold. Everything leading up to the eclipse she subconsiously hated, she supressed that she was just a pawn for Griffith. What she's seeing now is Guts defiance and fight trying to protect her, that Guts is even willing to let himself be consumed by the beast of darkness and become a monster if it means he can defend her and his companions.
My guess is armored-dogguts will defeat the black hawk but stay in berserk mode until within the dream Casca awakens and calm him. Schrieke will be unable to link up within Guts since they are caught within Casca's mind and not the real world. This goes along with Farnese realization that she will never be with Guts as he's in love with Casca and Shrieke realizing that Casca is what Guts truly needs to ease his rage. Basically Farnese represents the physical while Shrieke the mental/spiritual and Casca is what Guts truly need in both realms. Casca is a victim and indirectly hero/savior.
Casca being able to directly calm the beast of darkness is a feat beyond what everyone else in the party has ever done before. The beast is a direct reference of a fylgje from the heathren religion, a spirit that guides and represent a persons personality. Currently the beast of darkness is a corrupted hostile dog however dog fylgjes was usually viewed as stoic loyal protectors and not the raging beast it currently is, I could see Casca being able to "cleanse" it.
However. This doesn't necessarily mean she wakes up or survives and could lead to the bitter sweet ending Miura has talked about, Casca will "live on" within Guts as his salvation and somehow their child will be seperated from Femo leading to Griffiths death.

That would mean they have to carry her body all the way back and we get another trip that takes 10 years, so I hope she won't.
I didn't even think about it until you've bumped this thread but 2018 being this close means we will soonish perhaps see 1 or 2 chapters! Can't wait /s
I had to start reading it from 350 to get in the groove of it and pick the proceedings up but reading it like this was actually quite fun a lot better than an occasional chapter barely moving the storylines along.
On February 25 2018 23:48 PVJ wrote: What do you think will happen now that Casca has a cursed heart wrapped in something evil?
I dont think it's a literally a curse, but more of a psychological "curse". Everything we've seen in her dream have been symbolic of her trauma.
If viewed as a reference to Little Briar Rose the thorns would represent protecting Casca's heart from the outside preventing her to be further hurt. The only way to prevent her from getting further hurt would be by cutting of all her emotions. Given the her "empty" expression we see in the final panel and Miura's frequent references to legends and fairy tales this is at least my theory.
I'm most interested in seeing how her relationship with Farnese and Schierke develops considering they have seen the innermost of Casca.
Casca doesn't even look like herself. None of the characters really do. I don't know what is up with this art style but it looks completely alien.
Also that "awakening" was incredibly underwhelming. And we literally walked 5 steps forward in this chapter before it ended. Like holy shit how many more years is this island going to take?
The last couple of pictures were gorgeous. Even if there's no way the story ever finishes it's still a pleasing piece of art to follow.
Isn't the fact that Casca is drawn differently explained quite directly on the panel where they discuss how she is/they are two completely different persons? And maybe it's a quite tacked-on, unpleasant explanation but I can also imagine that Miura got tired of drawing her in this way for the past 10(?) years and wanted to do something different. But that's just thinking out loud and the actual explanation on the pages sits well with me.
Personally I actually like her new design. She haven't been the warrior she used to for years, she has been in an innocent childlike state instead she has only just recently been "reborn".
Although I was already looking for the May chapter, I messed up the release cycle somehow, so it turns out I haven't yet read 356 released two weeks ago.
I actually then had to read it twice to grasp what's it about, I also wish it would have been a bit smarter about setting it up. But the chapter itself then is great, Miura has some of the best presentation of battles, there is great pace to the action and good angles or I don't know what that makes it clear to oversee the whole deal.
Also, those war-flags made of skin are more horrifying in themselves then most horror movies in their entirety.
what a fucking troll I thought it would be a break after Casca's scream, but this chapter isn't much better chapter is too short (might make the wait longer for Casca), no setup on the war, and why should we even care that Griffith is killing some giants... =( he's the one who brought them here anyway
argh, I just wanted to see Casca, we waited so many years for that
Yeah i don't understand this chapter either. There was such a build up with the healing of Casca and everything falls flat right before the apex with some random giants coming from nowhere.

Aw. We only waited 20 years.
another 20 years for the manga to end then
You're more optimistic than I am, I fully expect that we'll never see a real end to this.
I gave up after a while on this ever being released but now I am seeing that at some point between the middle of July and today this has been published: http://readberserk.com/chapter/berserk-chapter-357/
Berserk is set to return after nearly a year of hiatus with Chapter 358 in the next Young Animal issue on April 26th!
From Skullnight.net:
"The 358th episode, which will be entitled to colour pages, is scheduled for April 26 in Young Animal #09/10. It is a double issue (but there is no double episode) because there is the Golden Week. The 11th issue is scheduled for May 24."
Interesting to see that there are actually some struggles in the new perfect empire - but the good kind of struggles that make everyone better. This is really leading up to an interesting end - if we ever get there!
Yearly chapter was kind of disappointing, but I suppose it fleshes out the workings of the country that griffith is making, so we can see how the hopes and dreams of everyone gets raped crushed later on.
Happy to see Farnese and Casca's relationship progress as it I expected. Nearly everything in their story is reversed yet they still bind together. Casca was saved by highclass (Griffith) and Farnese by lowclass (Guts). Casca was abused, Farnese was the abuser. Farnese in what most similar to the Eclipse (Slan's troll domain) she have experience managed to protect Casca while Guts failed at the Eclipse. Eventually they found salvation in each other, got a mother/daughter relationship that have now progressed to a sisterly one.
Dont know what to think about how she reacts to Guts, she can clearly interact with him when she cannot directly see him. So it cannot just be him that triggers her trauma. After her direct clash with the Godhand and Abyss can she see "more"?

Memories and certain associations of those involved in the Eclipse seems to trigger it, and I can understand why looking at Guts in that berserker armor would be all kinds of fucked up.
And the big one: he's still marked. That's probably why she sees him like that.
Three months for a chapter is soon? Lol, that's some serious Stockholm Syndrome.
I think this chapter all but confirms that Skull Knight is a dead Gaiseric whose spirit is trapped inside a magical armor. It's kinda cool that he's not an apostle. It just goes to show that you don't need to sell your soul to the devil in order to have power in the Berserk world.
Kentaro Miura, the creator of Berserk, has passed.
The Google translation of the above tweet reads: "[Report of the death of Professor Kentaro Miura] Dr. Kentaro Miura, the author of "Berserk", passed away on May 6, 2021 due to acute aortic dissection. We would like to express our utmost respect and gratitude to Dr. Miura's painting work and pray for his soul. May 20, 2021 Hakusensha Co., Ltd. Young Animal Editorial Department"
Tragic day for Miura's family and friends, and the world of manga and anime.
Very sad. The Golden Age arc of Berserk is one of the greatest arcs in manga history. I really wanted to see where Miura was going to go with the current stuff. I think he was using a shonen style to set us up for another catastrophe and now we'll never know.
I mean he was pretty publicly shopping for someone to takeover the series, he had notes, while it may not be the end of berserk, it may not have the heart and soul it used to. especially in the art department.
I'd be fine if it were left unfinished as is though.

Holy shit this makes me so sad. I was thinking this got bumped due to some news on a new chapter, why did this have to happen
I never thought all those jokes about Miura dying before Beserk finishes would actually come true. RIP Kentaro Miura, truly one of the greatest mangakas.
I am devasted, cynical as it may sound his passing is literally the first time a celebrity death has made me cry. Berserk means the world to me and has helped through some really rough times. Rest in peace Miura-sensei.
To be fair, I don't really know where the series could have gone anyways. Guts accomplished what he wanted - restoring Casca. Now I guess he would want to kill Griffith, but he can't really since he's a god. Basically he would need to find a way to target the God Hand. It probably has something to do with the previous God Hand and what happened to them? Some kinda ritual maybe? IDK, I feel like whatever ending we would have gotten would just have been disappointing, especially since Miura basically lost interest in the series. We're at a good stopping point now anyways, so a headcanon ending could be that Guts just retired on the elf island.
With the brand Guts and Casca are still destined to suffer an eternity in the Vortex of Souls, I suppose you could headcanon it cannot drag them if they die at Elfheim. Femto is also vulnerable now he has a physical body, could definitely see Slan betray the Godhand since she uniquely to them kept her human feelings and is gushing over Guts.
I was sad since the last time Gutz had a direct conversation with Griffith was 2001. That's 20 years, and Miura leaves this world with a cliffhanger D:
Hopefully the manga continues, but I'm just glad I got to see at least the world that was created.
Nice, hopefully the release schedule will pick up again. Miura wasn't really interested in Berserk anymore but I'm sure his assistants will be eager to prove themselves and pick up the pace of drawing the manga.
To be honest the past two years had great chapters -- getting Caska again, the destruction of Elfheim etc. really truly seems to me the continuation of the story Miura was planning, and not some cashgrab retcon.
