Seeing TI5 dominated by the Chinese again is kinda killing most of the hype for me.
^i never get that kind of mindset, is not like east and west have distinct play styles nowadays so if you just cover the faces up you won't be able to tell who's playing against who
Somehow I get the 'sad' part though is like some people hating on Chinese 'ricing' games back then (when c9 riced more iirc) they will use whatever reason to hate on the teams -speaking this as an Asian looking dude surviving in the western world, everything still comes down to some natural human reaction. Funny thing is Chinese viewers will have no problem to keep watching if all of their teams dropped out (while they are being sad) and root for whatever team they like next.
Bare in mind I bet CDEC barely have any fans from Chinese viewers too lol
For me personally as I kinda feel the same way as Champloo:
The thing about the Chinese teams that makes me uninterested is just that I actually haven't watched their scene the entire year. So barely know what players are on the team.
This is my thoughtprocess when I think of what players are on what teams:
CDEC? Don't know a single player. Ehome? Think ROTK and Lanm is on Ehome. Is burning there? Idk iG? Chuan Ferrari and Faith are still on. Don't remember who the other two are Newbee? Mu is on but Hao left for VG. LGD? Can't remember a single player.
VG: ice x3, fy, fenrir, Hao and Super
So yeah, that's the players I know on top of my head. It's kinda hard to get excited when I don't even know their rosters.
I can cheer for VG because I know that team, the others not so much.
Has nothing to do with race. I just don't know the teams so have like 0 connection to them.

dont you watch other sports? people almost always favour teams from their home country and want to see them win, even if they arent fans of those teams. its not that you hate the other team, you are just more emotionally invested in teams you can draw some (arbitrary) connection with. in national tournaments fans root for the teams from their home town, in international tournaments they root for teams from their home country and in interplanetary competions its go earthlings. its the most normal thing in the universe.
Yeah east v west adds a lot of excitement to dota. Ofc I'm going to cheer for the US hope. Maybe the playstyles aren't much different but most of the players stream on twitch/post on twitter etc. You don't really have much interaction as a westerner with chinese dota players outside of events (I'd imagine it's the same the other way). It's difficult to cheer for some player you barely know anything about (There are exceptions like ice, fy, burning etc).
I'd imagine it's the same in china like why cheer for arteezy or fear when you never see them besides at large events and you have your own players to cheer for.
Now that c9 is out I'm not sure who I'd like to win. I like EHOME, rotk and lanm have something about them that makes me like them. Also LGD winning would be interesting just for the xiao8 story. But I also wouldn't mind EG coming up big again after DAC when it matters the most, or Secret making a huge lower bracket run.
In general I think Secret losing to EHOME made this TI far more hype to me. I don't really care whether Secret win or lose, but I'm excited to see whether they make a run from their current position to win the title or if they just crumble hard under the pressure. Secret just strolling their way to the finals wouldn't have been as exciting.

Well I am in the exact situation like you knowing who is in eastern team lol (except I know LGD pretty well thats why i have the flair for at least 6 months now), but the thing is I have similar knowledge to western team as well, other than EG, secret, c9,navi I know some bits and bobs for the rest of western teams.
So overall I know western teams better than eastern teams while I really just dont give a fuck much about western/eastern teams crumble. I flame or praise whatever team on the go (I do have some bias on LGD).
I like/dislike certain players or playstyle that's it and since the play style is so similar in east and west this year, like I said valve can just cover up the players faces I will still happily root for whoever I like after 10mins into the game.
East v west discussion is fun in its own though haha that's why I like it

My point exactly. I like guys who work hard.
Lost money on EHOME-Secret, recovered them on Vici and Phoenix without watching games themselves. I wish iG brings a fight to Secret, because if you aren't fan of Ferrari_430, Faith and BurNing you aren't fan of Dota in my opinion. My favorite team at this TI is CDEC (by a playstyle), and they don't even have flair on LD and I support iG, EG, EHOME and Secret because of the players' personalities and playmaking abilities.
Everyone on LGD is like a role-model for me, and I'll always support them despire the fact they now play the most boring drafts in their whole career aside from Maybe who played the most heroes mid this tournament so far with remarkable KDA every time. (Storm, Ember, TA, Tiny, Gyro, Leshrak, Bristle, SF, Puck). Such a pleasure to watch!

Pub draft is 5 carries. What makes what they chose a pub draft?
c9 brute forcing towers with Pugna+UD is like the most c9 thing to do after bone7 started drafting. It has worked for them before (obviously BS was a new pick in this context), but the issue was just that how on earth is it going to work against VG's lineup. How will you brute force towers against Gyro, ES, WW, Sniper, DS? And I don't really see another way for c9 to play that game either. They have UD+Pugna, it's not like they can somehow split the map and play a pickoff game either. VG can do that better with ES alone. VG also have heroes that scale well to later game and they have very strong teamfight throughout the game.

They felt like VG deserved the series after that first game and this was their way of bowing out in style. Such gentlemen, this C9 squad.

I think that part of what Valve wants to do with its Majors system is to make people care about all the regions.
