We returned to cover the Dota 2 Champions League and realized about 30 minutes before going live that Tobi would be casting on a different platform- Daily Motion. The fact that we were the only stream on twitch covering a navi match is undoubtedly the reason we were able to hold about 10,000 concurrent viewers for the duration of the opening series of D2CL. Although both Hippie and I were beyond excited to see those numbers, we would have been doing the same old coverage on our twitch channel even if Tobi was casting the regular joinDOTA twitch channel.

After receiving an angry email from the CEO of Navi, we were able to open a dialogue and understand that the source of the issue wasn’t in fact that we were providing alternative coverage, but that we were doing so on the TwitchTV platform rather than DailyMotion. We’re still working with Navi on how we will proceed with our coverage, but regardless we figured this situation was isolated to a Twitch vs. DailyMotion scenario more so than anything else.

D2CL very well may be an isolated situation, but we ran into a similar problem today with our live coverage of the MLG Full Sail Invitational. Again, unbeknownst to us until minutes before going live, we realized that MLG is not using their traditional TwitchTV stream, but instead an alternative platform viewable only from their site. Our intention was never to steal viewers from the MLG stream as the only Twitch coverage; it was simply a bi-product of MLG’s choice to use a different platform. We have obliged MLG’s request to discontinue our coverage and have been able to resolve the situation amicably outside of the public limelight.
