That being said, fuck tipping for takeout. It's not needed, and unless they went out of their way to help you or something I wouldn't bother.

Still, the UK system is better, where you just tip is service is really good.

The waiter would need to do some amazingly terrible things to make me think they shouldn't be paid at all. It just seems like such an amazing dick move. ive not tipped when its usually mandatory once, it was some of the worst service ive ever had.

I prefer leaving a tip so that the tip + the bill add up to a whole number. It's satisfying. Also I try to tip well especially because I eat at a few places fairly often and so the service I get at those places tends to be really good. I've almost never had a waiter so bad that I didn't tip at all, although I have had some terrible meals (ie Thai with half-frozen chicken in it) where I just talk to the manager and ask for a refund.

See there's another difference. In Britain you don't do that! The horror! You keep your head down, eat what you can whilst grumbling to any dinner companions. If a member of staff asks how your meal is you look sheepish, nod and say "lovely, thank you" or words to that effect and carry on. If its actually inedible you leave it and make loud comments about how full you are and how wonderful it all is. Then you leave the restaurant and make nasty remarks about it to all your friends. ;P (Obviously just playing to stereotype here. In fairness we rarely have a meal bad enough to complain about around here. These days we're rather spoiled up in Liverpool, good restaurant scene now.)

As for 18% it's pretty easy. 10% doubled and then round down. Unless you're eating somewhere extremely fancy that'll usually do it. I either do that or 10% x1.5 and then round up so that it makes a nice whole number. Then again I'm a #oldman so who even knows anymore.
