Over here tipping is a social nicety; there's some expectation you'd give SOMETHING if you've had a decent meal, about 5-10%, but its not exactly strictly expected. But in the US you either do a solid 20% or something or you get lynched because its the staff's pay. Why not just...you know...pay the staff properly? Can US businesses just not afford it or what? | ||

I am sure their is some historical reason why tipping is a big part of the staff's pay. But right notice its economical. It keeps food prices low, because the cost of paying the staff is directly paid by the patrons and some other stuff. Some staff like it because they can avoid claiming the funds on their taxes, which is not strictly legal, but the IRS isn't going to hunt down that small amount of money. Its not a good system, but its the one that exists and not one is really in a rush to change it. I am pretty sure she would just tell me to repost the picture of her hand from the 1v1 thread. | ||
