I think mahnini told me that the 965/955 could OC to like 4.0GHz on like normal volt/stock cooling (one or the other) if the mobo is decent. I heard the same thing as well. I'm enjoying the quiet fans right now and will probably just OC it once it starts losing performance to newer games. I would rather not listen to loud fans at the moment. :p
i have an i920 and with a decent cooler i got it over 4.0...its not a big deal tbh but i prefer to OC the cpu to like 30% of what it can for now and later OC it to 80-90%

why is there a gts 250 in sli
...
|
Cuz that's 2 9800GTX+ in sli and you can get them for about 220 bucks which is price/performance king for that price. best thing above that is 300+ bucks
Esp if you run 1920x1200 that's a good choice

eh ok I'll take your word for it.
Anyways for my new computer build which I will be making in either February or April I really can't decide between 3 setups T_T;;
1. AMD AM3 955 + 5850 -> $1280 including monitor http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17216647 -The idea is that it is the cheapest build and will be semi-upgradeable since the AM3 socket will still be maintained until the hexacore comes out. Mahnini helped me out with this one~
2. Intel 1156 i5 750 + 5850 -> $1350 including monitor http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17033488 -Probably a stable build that is a bit future proof though I'm worried (maybe without good reason) about the performance of the i5 750 vs the i7 920. Hyperthreading seems more future-'proof', and the only thing that the i5 has over the i7 is the aggressive turbo boost.
3. Intel 1366 i7 920 + 5770 -> $1370 including monitor -Probably the worst build overall when it comes to graphics, but the main point is the i7 core. It is possible to get the i7 920 at microcenter for around $220 which would shave off around $70, allowing for a 5850, but if not, I don't like having a 5770 with a i7 920 :/
Overall I'm kinda torn between 1 and 2, with 3 being a little spine up my back because the i7 920 is just too desirable T_T.
Anyways I have some questions:
1. Which is the superior build for the $, 1 or 2? 2. What does triple channel RAM have over dual channel? 2b. 6GB of triple channel or 3GB? 2c. Is it worth getting dual channel RAM with the i7? 3. How effective is Hyperthreading in general?
For those wondering about why the price seems to be so high, in all of the builds in included a monitor, Windows 7, Wireless Adapter, CPU cooler, CD drive, and a USB 3.0 mobo.

1. If you are really paranoid about having a dead socket pick 3, otherwise I would recommend 2. Obviously if you can get the 920 at MC that would be the best option. 2. Not much really. b. You can get away with 3 but I would recommend 6GB. c. No. 3. In games you won't see that big of a difference but for encoding, compressing and similar tasks its amazing.
I would advise against getting the 650W model. 500-550W is where its at for single card + overclocking, 750W+ is for multi-gpu setups. 650W is kinda the crap zone where you don't get much benefit from the extra $10 spent over the 550W model.
|
i think he'd be better off sticking with the 650W considering 5850 + i5 at full load is already around 500W consumption.
|
I think I'm gonna stick with the 650W.
When it comes to dead socket, Intel says the are going to abandon the 1366 in 2011, so it's not like buying the 920 will get me a better socket. If anything the AM3 socket is the most reliable of all of them because it offers the option of a hexacore and possibly more.

I would pick a worse GPU / CPU / PSU to get a better screen tbh. 22"/23"/24" are just awesome.

I have a very similar build to this. It was a pre-built computer by HP though. What I find really great about the GTS 250 and a small power supply of 650 Watt is that the computer over-all generates very little heat and is quiet. It makes playing more enjoyable without the sound of massive fans in the back. It's handling games well enough, so I have no doubt it will be able to run Starcraft 2 at maximum setting.

i would consider going with this, 24" is NICE

Yea I5 + 5850 and a 19" is like super sad T-T

On January 21 2010 00:07 Boblion wrote: Yea I5 + 5850 and a 19" is like super sad T-T Yeah, I don't know how I'd go on without either a 23"+ screen or dual monitors now.
Fragkrag's builds were weirdly expensive, though that's probably because all those were done without rebates. By the time he actually commits though, he can probably squeeze in a large widescreen just off price drops from 5850s I bet, it'd be sad if they continue to retail at like 300+ by Feb~April.
As for opinion on the builds, I pretty much agree with xmShake, though I'd favor i5 over i7 for most circumstances unless you know you'll be dealing with programs that will actually be able to utilize HT.
|
I actually don't like overly large screens haha. I can upgrade the screen later to get like a 22'' for a dual monitor setup.
Yeah I noticed they were pretty expensive as well, but I can't take advantage of combos on Wishlists ;p
|
goddamn usb 3.0 boards are expensive, the board in your i5 build cost $80 more than mine ><
Also, too bad u didn't buy a couple of weeks ago when i5-750's were $150 and i7-920's were $200 at MC =/
|
Btw Frag maybe you should consider to buy the 5830 when it will be released. It should be ~ 4890 but with less consumption, less heat and Dx11. I mean i don't think that a 5850 would be that useful with the resolution of a 19".

Not a fan of HP tbh, and apparently ibuypower upgraded my powersupply without telling me because when I opened it up to remove the packing and check all the connections it has an 800W power supply. It's still very quiet though even with 4 fans running yes I said 4 fans, it's been on for almost an hour now and only at 32C with the fans running at 70% speed. Plus it looks fucking cool.
