I've actually been using this for a very long time, it works just fine outside of Korea. I have not talked to people that work at GOM, but I have talked to people that know people that work at GOM in this section and what I gathered was pretty much "You are not Korean, therefore you should pay to watch our stuff. We are not struggling at all, we just want your money."

With that being said, I feel obligated to give everybody this:

http://www.gomtv.com/live/view.gom?liveid=18083

If they are not playing a live event, it is a live VOD or some other esport event.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the link. I know a couple of other ways the GSL can be watched in HD, just a shame we can't get that Tastosis banter in HD too.

"You are not Korean, therefore you should pay to watch our stuff. We are not struggling at all, we just want your money."

That's a pretty asshole quote that flies in the face of the "GSL is struggling, give them money or they go out of business" crowd. I'm not familiar with Korean culture, but I've seen similar arrogant nationalism shit out of Japanese anime and video game culture. The attitude there seems to be something along the lines of "we don't give a shit about your baka gaijin money so we'll region-lock the hell out of games, even F2P online garbage like Kantai Collection; we won't even include exports out of Japan in the official anime sales charts".

Meanwhile I'll continue to enjoy the free Source on Azubu for SSL and Proleague, and give all the praise I can to the SPOTV leagues. The player caliber and prize pool is pretty much identical in SSL as in GSL anyway, and the production value is arguably even higher.

Well what I am hearing from these people is that they said this, but even if I didn't hear that, I know enough about rotten business practices to tell you that they are not broke, and they do not need any extra money.

GOM doesn't just do GSL, and although GSL loses money, the event is only given a VERY small amount of money from GOM. GOM also does music, TV, other esports, PC programs, pop culture, and pretty much the whole 9 yards for anything on a screen that you are not in control of.

1080p is free in Korea, you can literally just walk into GSL without buying a ticket or paying for anything whatsoever, etc. This alone shows they can't be worried about funding at all.

Also, as BaseTradeTV's Rifkin has said before, it costs no more money to give Medium or even Source for free than it does to give Low. This has nothing to do with their way of making money and what they are doing is forcing people to subscribe just to make sense of what they are seeing on their screen.

People say "Well shit, I can't see anything that is going on, but it's cool, so I'll give them five dollars. No big deal" and they do this in mass. It's just to whore subscribers. It is a very bad business practice to do everything but force your consumers to give you something they shouldn't HAVE to.

Ahaha, so it's just extortion then.

Same thing Roadog said, it's just what some countries/businesses do. Thankfully with this though, you can watch it for free.

Also on gomexp.com just set your language to Korean and it will do the same thing. Nothing is actually IP blocked, it's just a pain in the ass to get and usually really silly.

I can see why they would want to keep people that can't speak Korean out, I mean look at Fish server, they even converted lots of stuff to Korean just because they don't want some retarded foreigner in their world, but what they are doing with the quality and sub stuff is using ignorance to milk people's wallets.

Look the sponsors. Only korean sponsors AND they are only relevant WITHIN Korea. Therefore very logical that HD is free in Korea. If koreans have to pay too, thats a lot more damaging than people outside Korea.

Exactly. GOM is not doing a charity for Korean viewers. Their sponsors and commercials are just not targeted at a foreign audience, that's all (and it would probably not be worth it with only a couple of thousand regular viewers).

You've been reading too much Reddit. Just because their ads don't target non-Koreans doesn't mean they can milk thousands of people just for the hell of it. They still play ads and you can talk about AdBlock all you want but they are insane for wanting to make any money out of foreigners.

GOM does not mange ONLY GSL, people forget this all the fucking time. The brand is worth over one hundred billion dollars.

Apparently you dont know what "business model" MLG did in 2012 (I think). MLG offered a ppv modell but luckily an US sponsor paid like 50k people ppv so that everyone (people outside USA too) can watch MLG for free.
I can see korean sponsors do the same with GOM.

You can actually work around to watch GSL in HD with English commentary!
All you have to do is download Livestreamer, with which you can pause and resume a stream in VLC. You open the low quality English stream in Livestreamer, the high quality one in your browser; stop the English stream in Livestreamer, wait until it synchronizes with the HD stream and then start Livestreamer (this assumes the low quality English stream is ahead of the HD one).
If the HD stream is ahead, then you have to open that one in Livestreamer, the English one in browser (preferably, though, the low quality stream should be opened with Livestreamer, at least for me the HD stream stutters very heavily—it might be just me, though).
Last time I tried this, the GOMtv Korean stream seemed to be ahead of the Twitch English cast so it did not work that well, but the Russian stream of magiK worked out pretty nicely.

Well if what you're saying is true, that sucks because I genuinely thought they needed some income.

Then again, the reasons why you don't pay for the tickets is that was the tradition in esports in korea and basically every event is like that. If they want more Korean attention in gsl you better not make them mad for forcing people to pay. The Koreans are really sensitive in that regard. Also just that Gom's doing well doesn't mean that GSL is. Gom might just sack GSL if it's not profitable.

So I can't 100% trust you on this, but I myself don't know much. What is clear is that if GSL's is not as desperate, then it is a REQUIREMENT and we don't give any support. But if GSL is, then we HAVE to give support.

GSL isn't struggling so much that they have to give us potato quality to save money. jesus christ, is the gom CEO struggling to eat like I am ? (yes, I actually can't afford the $8 or whatever it is to watch in hd because that means less food, a shame, I know)

I don't think he is.

GOM is just struggling for power here because they have none. their last grab at relevance before people just stop putting up with their shit and start watching proleague and ssl like they should. least they can do for people who get up at their unreasonable times for foreigners (which they probably do on purpose) is give us a decent high or even medium quality.

No, GSL is struggling. Gom isn't. Just like SC2 is struggling, but Blizzard isn't. SC2 and GSL won't see any growth unless a miracle happens where Blizzard actually get their shit together.

SC2 is at a high in popularity in Korea. Just the dirty commoners from foreign lands lack passion.

"I don't have any source on this but here let me write a sentence that feeds your bias so that you will believe everything I say."

There are two solid arguments for financialy struggling:
a) Twitch ads with that low viewer numbers can't support a stream of that production value over a long period of time. It's not just a computer with an internet connection like most SC2 streams.
b) Ads played directly in stream don't actually give them any revenue for english viewers. Korean advertisers want korean audience, not someone in the U.S. or EU who will never buy their product anyway.

But even that doesn't really matter, because the only one who knows whether or not GSL is actually struggling financially is GOM.
And until you put a valid source on your thread it's just some bullshit you made up.

Also why is it so hard to find alot of information about gretech, all I get is a little section that seems to be last edited in 2007.

One hundred billion dollars? They're "insane for wanting to make any money out of foreigners"? Some important detail might have passed me by, but wanting to make money off people utilizing your services is anything but insane. Want to clarify?

Grab the other stream, I forget what it is. TaKeTV or something? Mute it, play regular GSL behind it and you get HD while being able to listen to Tastosis. ez solution

As long as this issue over paying for quality in the GSL has been going on I've been happen to say that at least we don't have UFC level PPV prices. We could be paying 50$ for what amounts to a set of matches. Instead we pay 8 USD a month for almost year long tournaments at the highest level.

I suppose 1080p outside Korea is used as a way to fund English casters? Dunno.

This guy is a troll. He made a thread yesterday saying Blizzard should do in game advertising. Mods are on break this summer because there is a couple of these guys . Either that, or TL wrote an algorithm that creates filler garbage for plebs to rip us off of our money to buy TL +... /troll

Well if TL+ gives me a means to tag posters ("balance whiner", "blizzard/LotV bitching all the time", "foreigner hater", etc.) I'd buy it for sure. So if this kind of posts are a TL move they're doing it right

This is the most pathetic article I have ever read on TL. Opinion and rumours and a sense of entitlement beyond believe. Sponsorship pays for the service in Korea, but I do not think it would pay for English casters - why would it?

But as an eternal optimist I will just assume that this entitled PoS and the people that agree with him are just feeling guilty for their free-loading, retarded ways and are seeking any justification to make themselves feel less seedy.
