Its like those hordes of Americans who think that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was done in an effort to end the war. Potentially even the lie that it saved lives somehow or that the Japanese would not surrender otherwise.

Let’s not paint Imperial Japan as some victim of the mean Americans power. There are large sections of Asia that still hold a grudge against Japan, with good reason. And we totally dropped that bomb to end that war. And then they dropped the second one because the war didn’t end. Then Japan tried to end the war, but a bunch of generals in Japan totally thought they could still win and there was a fight to prevent the Emperor from delivering the message to the people about the surrender.

Do you have any evidence or arguments that they weren't dropped in an effort to end the war or that it would have saved lives as an alternative to an invasion of the main Japanese island?

The whole sale invasion of Japan may not have been as bad as the US general predicted, considering how war weary the population was. But given the era and general lack of communication and we didn't even have phone cables from the US to Asia until the 1960s, we didn't know shit about Japan. We did know that they sealed their own men in machine gun bunkers and crashed planes into our ships in an effort to stop us, so no one really wanted to engage with the idea of a full scale invasion.

Thanksgiving is, for the most part, a continuation of old-fashioned pagan harvest festivals.

The US, like many of its holidays, fed the history of it through a Disney-like-filter and spat out a glurgy result that basically glamorizes complete fiction. And then that was fed through the marketing machine to produce today's commercial versions.

I don't particularly believe the stories of them knowing it was an awful, horrible weapon but this war was so terrible that it justifies dropping them. It seems to be much more of an after-the-fact reasoning, and they were dropped because it was war, because WW2 was vicious and because civilian bombing was a regular thing.

At this point my guess for Man of the Year is Mueller. World leaders have been fairly quiet this year.
