Fuck Thanksgiving.

Also, bull. The parties are trash and both should be abandoned. Blaming FPTP and a two party system for sticking with these idiots is just a crappy excuse to enjoy the status quo.

Just when I thought GH's take would be unique in my observed experience this Thanksgiving.

It's a war on Thanksgiving

Are you really that insulated from history? I suppose it would explain a bit.

@P6 I'd read it. I feel like you nailed Kwark like Jesus to the cross. He'd be skimming some off the top too though

Its like those hordes of Americans who think that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan was done in an effort to end the war. Potentially even the lie that it saved lives somehow or that the Japanese would not surrender otherwise.
When you came along so righteous with a new national hate, so convincing is the ardor of war and of men, it's harder to breathe than to believe you're a friend. The wars at home, the wars abroad, all soaked in blood and lies and fraud.

Let’s not paint Imperial Japan as some victim of the mean Americans power. There are large sections of Asia that still hold a grudge against Japan, with good reason. And we totally dropped that bomb to end that war. And then they dropped the second one because the war didn’t end. Then Japan tried to end the war, but a bunch of generals in Japan totally thought they could still win and there was a fight to prevent the Emperor from delivering the message to the people about the surrender.

Do you have any evidence or arguments that they weren't dropped in an effort to end the war or that it would have saved lives as an alternative to an invasion of the main Japanese island?

That sounds very plausible, I totally believe this statement made by the president of the United States and have no doubt whatsoever about its veracity.

The whole sale invasion of Japan may not have been as bad as the US general predicted, considering how war weary the population was. But given the era and general lack of communication and we didn't even have phone cables from the US to Asia until the 1960s, we didn't know shit about Japan. We did know that they sealed their own men in machine gun bunkers and crashed planes into our ships in an effort to stop us, so no one really wanted to engage with the idea of a full scale invasion.

A quick check shows that a year to year repeat has only happened once in 90 years (Nixon 1971-72) and still his ego cannot accept that they would not pick him again.
Sigh.

Thanksgiving is, for the most part, a continuation of old-fashioned pagan harvest festivals.

The US, like many of its holidays, fed the history of it through a Disney-like-filter and spat out a glurgy result that basically glamorizes complete fiction. And then that was fed through the marketing machine to produce today's commercial versions.

I don't particularly believe the stories of them knowing it was an awful, horrible weapon but this war was so terrible that it justifies dropping them. It seems to be much more of an after-the-fact reasoning, and they were dropped because it was war, because WW2 was vicious and because civilian bombing was a regular thing.

At this point my guess for Man of the Year is Mueller. World leaders have been fairly quiet this year.

Amazon's CEO is now worth over a 100 Billion dollars
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/jeff-bezos-closing-100-billion-163041425.html

The Amazon.com Inc. founder’s fortune is up $2.4 billion to $100.3 billion, as the online retailer’s shares jumped more than 2 percent on optimism for Black Friday sales. Online purchases for the day are up 18.4 percent over last year, according to data from Adobe Analytics, and investors are betting the company will take an outsized share of online spending over the gifting season.
The $100 billion milestone makes Bezos, 53, the first billionaire to build a 12-figure net worth since 1999, when Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates hit the mark.

Bezos’s fortune rose $32.6 billion this year through Thursday, the largest increase of anyone on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a daily ranking of the world’s 500 richest people. Amazon have climbed 5 percent this week alone.

As Bezos’s wealth flirts with new heights, there’s likely to be more questions about what he intends to do with it. Unlike Gates, who was the world’s richest person until Bezos passed him in October, or U.S. investor Warren Buffett, the world’s third-richest person with $78.9 billion, Bezos has given relatively little of his fortune to charity.

Bezos is only just starting to focus on philanthropy, and in June tweeted a request for ideas on how to help people. Since 2002, Bezos has given away Amazon shares worth about $500 million at current prices, according to a Bloomberg analysis of Form 4 filings. The billionaire said in April that he sells $1 billion of Amazon stock every year to fund his space business Blue Origin LLC.

Gates, 62, who has a net worth of $86.8 billion according to the Bloomberg index, would be worth more than $150 billion if he hadn’t given away almost 700 million Microsoft Corp. shares and $2.9 billion of cash and other assets to charity, according to an analysis of his publicly disclosed giving since 1996. The index numbers are based on the close of trading in New York Wednesday. Bezos’s fortune and Amazon share data reflect Friday’s closing trading prices in New York.
