OLD NAME

NEW NAME

A store in Taiwan markets itself as a source for "hip hop urban clothing and gears." Fine enough. Chinese can do hip hop too right. What takes the cake though is something devastatingly funny if it were not totally moronic and racist - the name of the store: Nigger King. I am abashed and do apologize for the word, but it has to be written for purposes of clarity and discussion.
We know of Burger King right? And we also know about Engrish or Chingrish whatever they call it. But don't they do at least basic research before naming a store? Like, the word was last used under peaceful cicumstances in the 1950s'. Use it now and you'll get to all sorts of trouble. Does Taiwan not know about this?
I hope they change it soon.

llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllmao i cant believe this actually happened

I'm pretty sure they know what that word means. In fact I know they do.
|
i think its a pretty cool name
|
Oh my god. That's beyond funny. I can't believe someone would do that without perhaps googling that word first. Still, sometimes people just plain don't do the research.
|
|
Lol, I JUST posted this the other day on a friend's facebook who returned from a trip from Taiwan. 黑人王 = Black Man King. It's been changed, though to Niggar King.
|
The chinese name under it is even more blunt imo
|
|
I mean, I dont take offense to it. The word "Nigger" comes from "Negro" which means black. They don't know what the meaning behind the word "could" be because its something that only stuck around the english language as a derogatory term which most people that aren't native english speakers would know about unless told about it.
(i'm black btw)
|
Well, hip hop does a pretty good job glamorizing that word so I'm not really surprised but LOL that's funny.
I honestly don't believe they are trying to be offensive at all.
|

There's more, chinese characters mean: "hei ren wang" which means "Black man king"
*jaw drops.

LOL this is so retarded..
|
Somehow "Niggar King" seems almost more offensive XD

Something looks fishy here. The first two pics on this thread spell the N-word with an E while the post by SpeaKEasY has the same shop pictured with the N-word spelling with an A.

Nothing's fishy. The shop was asked to change the name, so, like I said, they changed the name to Niggar King.

If you told me a word in another language was a bad word, I'd have no idea if it's the equivalent of "crap" or "cunt". And while naming your store "black man" is still offensive to us in North America, in my experience Asian countries are more tolerant of racial stereotyping against minorities.

Somehow, it reminds me of this:

It's been changed to Niggar. All's well now

As I saw in the comments of this post on the front page of reddit
I think I've seen this shop in person! It's near a tourist area in Hong Kong. The sign in Chinese (黑人王) is literally translated as "black man king" or "king of the black people". I think the exact word choice was an accident; many of my Chinese friends don't think the n-word is offensive. They pick it up from music and the internet and usually think it's a friendly term. They also have a Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NKSTORE

Hahaha i love this stuff.
some of you have probably heard of that one toothpaste brand: 黑人牙膏 - black person toothpaste. marketed this way because to us asians (and others too i guess), regard black people as having really nice white teeth.

This is the cause of innocence and the enjoyment of hip hop. Another reason to get a good chuckle at engrish.
|
You' be surprised how many words leak into Asian languages without them actually absorbing the meaning behind it. As a Japanese speaker, there's no end of words in Japanese that are actually English words but don't mean even slightly the same thing. I'd imagine that's the case here. They heard it in a hip hop song or two, they figure it means black person in a "bro" type sense, call their store that.
|
Is it me or does the A look a little too grainy to be real? Granted I'm tired as hell, but something there looks fishy.

Maybe a little slowpoke?
|
no one should get butthurt over this, its just difference in culture. chinese people dont think of it as a bad word. i know a lot of people in my family point at things with their middle fingers all the time without realizing the western interpretation of it.
|
Well if a lot of your English came from american rap/pop music you probably wouldn't understand that the N word is not acceptable for a store name since they say it all the time!

Well, you google the word and find out it's the favorite term of endearment between black youth.

Over here its called Darlie in english, while keeping the same chinese name. I guess calling it N-word toothpaste would be too much XD

That's the key word on so many levels. Especially in countries/areas/communities where people are more tolerant things like this aren't seen as offensive as in those where this isn't true.
Why? Because all involved parties share a laugh about it and get along happily. The only reason I see people being offended by this is because it touches their own feelings about the issue, I think it's pretty narrow minded and intolerant to keep pushing down our throats how horrible certain words are. Those are the people who insist on the negative context of those words and make the whole issue worse.

i really dont see the problem.

(i'm black btw) And Negro comes from the Latin word "Niger", which means black, and is actually much closer to the derogatory term "Nigger".

Niggar King lol! Ain't that much better than nigger king, and most westerners will catch on to the meaning anyway xd.

It's a good thing he changed that letter. Now I can die in peace.

It's funny that oriental countries have to apply our values and morals to their business.
And yet, western tech companies make use of sweatshops in those countries where people work in absolutely disgusting conditions for endless hours, and we get outraged for 15-20 minutes when we hear about it, right before buying the latest iPad which is more shiny from all the new, even smaller children polishing it with their tiny hands. + Show Spoiler +They won't be around for the next iPad because they'll have arthritis by then.
And then they use a bad word and ooooh, how dare they use a word that has been bad in the US [for the last 50 years].

This is just true.
If not for the internet i wouldn't know that Nigger is still considered to be REALLY offensive in the US... I mean, the word is like used in every hip hop video and tons of movies were "friends" say it to each other?
|
i feel like it's reversed racism. people put so much effort into the meaning of 'nigger' that it becomes explicit and wrong, but only because of that. had these people not given two shits about "nigger" then that's exactly what it would become -- meaningless.
|
黑人 in TW or Chinese culture is NOT insulting, it literally just translate to black people and does not carry that negative meaning as Black people as it would in western society. in Hong Kong, we consider 黑鬼 to be insulting (it just means Black ghost, ghost being foreigners. Basically when you use this word, you are using it to attack the fact that he is black, that's why this word is insulting athough in direct translation, doesn't really have much racism in it.)
In Taiwan and China, they just add some adjective words onto the 黑人 part, like 臭黑人 (smelly black person).
In fact, one of the most famous toothpaste in Hong Kong and Taiwan is called 黑人牙膏. (black man toothpaste) The original name of this product is called Darkie but later is changed to Darlie because it is said to be racism.
(just for fun, there was a 白人牙膏 as well, 白 = white. according to wiki, there is a 綠人牙膏, 綠 = green)

what is racist in one part of the world may not be racist elsewere... you know there is a state called Niger, right?
