Dear moderators: Terribly sorry if this thread is deemed inappropriate (or in the wrong section :c). If so, please take it down. I tried searching for a thread like this. If I managed to miss an existing one, I am sorry.
I think most of us can agree that the finals of IPL's TAC3 has had it shares of problems, so I thought it would be good to point it out so they and other leagues can learn from the mistakes displayed. I do not hate IPL, I just want them to do well, and you do learn from mistakes.
I'll probably forget some, but here are some problems experienced.

No booths While booths certainly help in sound proofing, they also do limit the players' field of vision, and them being able to see the crowd might pose a problem. Also, it looks pretty bad to have the players sitting within spitting distance of the casters, even if they do wear military-grade sound-cancelling headphones. It also looks very cheap, and not very fit of a big team league finals.

Wtf is this Shit? *Break "We have" *Break "Liquid..." *Break "TAY..." *Break "JAAAA" *Break "And now we're back with-" *Break It's not very hard to be creative with downtime. Sure, it's o0k to run some commercials for your players, but surely you can find some way to waste time? Have the casters talk about the game (hell, have them analyse the replay), and the one coming up. Maybe even discuss their statistics against the specific race and/or player. Maybe you can interview the teammates of the players in the game coming up or go into the crowd for some opinions. There are so many options to fill time.
Tech (vehicle of ESPORTS) Currently, the stream basically flatlined during Losira vs Sheth, which is sadly not the first time during this event. Earlier we saw Seed go up against Taeja in a tense match, when the video gave up, and we were only able to hear the casters. Then the audio died. When it came back, Taeja was in a convincing lead and the viewers had missed a big comeback. D:
Casters This is nit-picking, and not an actual problem. I do not think that KK and DoA are bad in any way, but they're not analysts. Couldn't IPL fly in an established caster (like Day[9] or Apollo) or invite a pro (Demuslim was commentating the games on his own stream, Idra and Incontrol have ventured into casting before) to help with the analytical side? Just a thing to make the whole package better than it already is.
I probably forgot some things as well, so feel free to chime in. Again, I do not hate IPL and wish to see them fail. I just think we're better off pointing out problems and pointing out ways to make things better for the community as a whole.
|
i can't imagine you've told them anything that hasn't already become apparent to the people running IPL...
|
This stream is a total fail, enough said. Fortunately, there's also DeMuslim's commentary stream available for IPL
|
The downtime/ lack of atmosphere really stands out for me. They need some music, something, anything to make it less awkward. They just throw Kevin Knocke out there and hope for the best. Even their production (camera work etc) is complete garbage. I'm being pretty hard on them, but that's because in my opinion team leagues are a big part of the future of esports, and IPL seems to be the only foreign organisation willing to compete with GSTL/Proleague. They have to do better.
|
I cant stop thinking that players can hear casters, i just cant imagine loud speakers being weaker than headphones.
|
The worst part about this (imo) is for the sponsors (and future of eSports).
Why would I want to sponsor a tournament that is BARELY functioning and when it is "working" you are greeted with a "Powered by AMD" advertisement.
That's like saying, "Hey! Want your computer to be horrible? Try AMD!".
If I were a sponsor I would be forcing them to stop displaying such advertisements.
|
I think we know why they keep failing.
"Sponsored by AMD"
|
Keep in mind that this is a League of Legends competition with a live SC2 final tacked on. You can probably guess where the majority of the organizational effort has gone.
|
They need to hire a dedicated obs, Adebisi ftw!

Then I'm completely baffled. For several reasons.

I honestly mean no malicious intent, however, I had a huge problem with how this event was scheduled and run, on a logistics side. I was one of those people that had the chance to go to this event. (i live near SF) And IGN came out and said at first: "The Finals will certainly be at 4PM (give or take an hour) and there will be at most 2 bo9s plus a match between the team's aces". A week before the finals, IGN comes out and says they will push up the finals to 9:30 AM and there will be no more match between the two team's aces.
Now, the ace match thing I can sort of understand. However, pushing the event up to 9:30AM really grinds my gears. First of all, we are nerds, we sleep at 3AM in the morning, 4PM is naturally a lot better of a time than 9:30 AM. Second of all, it seems like IGN just wanted to schedule the finals as early as possible so they can get the SC2 stuff done ASAP and move on to the LoL stuff. I know it seems a little bit harsh and irresponsible, but the LoL community is large in the Bay Area as well.
But back to the problem of 9:30AM, SF is in an area that is not very accessible in the Bay Area (it's kind of on the edge and certainly not very easy to get to, unless you are a tourist), it is still about an hour to an hour and a half away from San Jose and about 1 hour 30 min away from where I live, if I took public transportation. Long story short, I would have to wake up at 6AM to attend this event, and it seems very unnecessary seeing that scheduling it at 4PM just makes a lot more sense for fans who live in the area. I just want to stress this again, the 9:30AM start time is just a huge inconvenience for an event that had as much hype as this one had. In the end, I had some conflicts and could not go to the TAC finals.
The price tag for entry is $18.75-$25, that seems really steep for the price of about 5 hours of entertainment, especially when there is no Bo9 between the aces. However, my friends who did go are seeming to have a very good time, so this could be debatable.
It just pains me to see that this event is just a huge disaster for SC2 fans. I mean, the bay area (area around San Francisco/San Jose etc) has been DYING for a big event to come to our area. And this event has not done us justice. We just feel misrepresented and there is such a big community in Bay Area California, but we can never really show our true support and justice, and we really can't even show it today. We're still waiting for our time to shine and dying for someone to bring an MLG/IPL(LAN) environment to our area. Poor scheduling, poor production, and poor organization have really disappointed me. I hate to sound to pessimistic, but this event seems like it was supposed to be for LoL fans and LoL fans only. This kind of upset me at first, but then again, it is reality. Not sure what this means for the future, but I think it's starting to go downhill.

As much as I hate to say it. I find myself thinking...I remember how epic GSTL was when they came to IPL4. And I thought maybe they would put on something at that level. Like this event doesn't feel that epic i guess is what I am getting at.

The GSTL Finals were produced by GOM. They just had Kevin do the intros.

I didn't go for the same reason, not enough guaranteed games + starting at 9:30am.
of course now it's been going on for 6 hours and is on game 2 of a second Bo9 so it would have been worth it retrospectively to show up at 12. However this was impossible to know in advance so I just stayed home.

Casters are fine. Only problem is the stream, which is just terrible. (Audio, Overlay, and Downtime)

I wouldn't say this is a "huge disaster" as there have been worse. In terms of IPL though, this event is pretty bad. Obviously, shit happens, games are going to drop, there will be glitches in the stream, etc. Hell, I couldn't literally watch the last game until the very end when the stream finally settled.
That being said, I really enjoy these casters. Comparing them to Tasteless/Artosis is like comparing apples to oranges, because they're two totally different styles of casting. Not everything needs to be heavily analyzed, and I'd prefer someone who doesn't have the game knowledge of Tasteless/Artosis to not try to analyze the game like that.

Well the GOM Soundguy really didn´t like the casting, judging from the music volume.

1 game per hour... amazing stuff
|
The observer seems worse than normal for this event, the audio is terrible, downtime is rapidly approaching MLG 2011 level. The one good thing is there are several other streams that provide more commentary/entertainment.
|
This was a very frustrating event to watch, it is now 1-1 in the second series and I'm calling it a night after what must be 20 minutes of downtime by now.
|
Theres no reason to do not critism IPL Finals if you watched MLG Dallas ... there is always an event which is worse, but it should not mean that you shouldnt tell the producing team whats fucked up ...
|
People do love to criticize tournaments every chance they get.

If I were a sponsor I would be forcing them to stop displaying such advertisements. Been thinking about that as well. I can't even really imagine how things can go this wrong if they have an experienced team(a somewhat experienced crew would for example test the setup before the event and have basic backups/backup plans even if the budget is not that high. I assume they have an experienced crew so what happened?) but regardless of why it must be horrible for the sponsors. Poor AMD.

Agree with virtually everything in the OP. A lackluster event with way too many technical difficulties and downtime. Events need to start inviting players to analyze games or entertain the time between games--even if they're not straight up casting.
|
you can't have 30min downtime between each game when you have a possible of 18 games to be played, it might not be bad as the viewers online but for the players and the crowd in the venue it's awful.
|

Well to be fair at IPL4 ST_Legend was doing the observing and MLG now has a really good observer in Adebisi. Should just invest in TheGDStudio for production.
And someone really needs to teach some casters how to fill time properly. Because making the crowd cheer for random stuff the casters shout out is just bad. Happened at IPL4 and everyone really didnt like it. Tell some stories about the players or something to make it interesting through the breaks, get other pro's or a set of casters to do some analysis of games to fill that space or something like that. Especially with this much down time you could have an analysis desk go through a replay of the previous game and such. Not saying you need to go out and buy a touch screen TV.
This dead space is just killing it from a spectator's perspective. Could have had TSL4 games played inbetween the games from how long the breaks are T_T

community ripped NASL a new one, this here is even worse.
i'm a huge IPL fan, and maybe they spoiled us but this just doesn't feel like IGN production that we've seen so far.
literally, worse major tournament this year. these types of problems are so 2011.

I have been very disappointed in the quality overall. I understand that it is a big tournament and everything, but if you are gonna give teams time for practice games you really need to be prepared with additional material, not this 1 game an hour crap.
|
Haven't watched any IPL TAC3 because I just don't like the casters and whatnot. However, considering how epic these finals are, I thought I'd tune in after just reading the preview. And then... 20 minutes of downtime and I don't even want to watch now. Oh and now the stream isn't even working for me now that the downtime is over.
|
i thought IPL would know how to host an event from the great IPL3/4
|
I got no problems with casters. Technical issues with the stream are sad but bearable to me. The environment isnt the best for an Sc2-event due to obvious LoL-layout, missing booths etc., but yet this still doesnt really bother my entertainment. The only thing that totally stands out to me are those gigantic breaks between the games. Someone might explain to me why they need 30+ minutes for next player to be ready. That are literally two meters between their bench and the hotseat. Add 5 minutes of setting up keyboards and maybe another 5 for introduction and set up the lobby. These breaks kill all the flow.

No issues with casters?
Doa: Zenio took a lot of economic damage. Cp opens drones lost (only 2 drones lost) Doa: yeah, but well he lost a lot of units CP opens units lost (zenio lost 2k minerals, oponent 3k) Doa: Huh well that's definitely a lot of larva lost, he can't possibly have any larva to drone up CP opens unit count (zenio at 70 drones, oponent at 50 probes) errrrrrr

I not going to moan on this thread. I cancelled my subscription which I have had since it was incepted. Not just because of this event (which is a new and horrible low) but a general trending down in quality compared to peers especially NASL.

I'd rather listen to DeMuslim, Incontrol, Idra, and 2GD than Doa and KK..even if their commentary is delayed compared to the stream. It's funny, there's comedic relief, and IPL is nonsense.

Yeah but theres a difference between making mistakes and just not analysing the game well. He only has a preview stream as well so he cant check things like that for himself off camera (which would help dramaticly)

I was never on it, just answering the guy that said that there is NO problems with casters 'cos I don't see that there isn't. The problems are understandable, I don't blame them for it, it happens, but you can't say there are none. You can't say these casters are perfect.

Pretty disappointing. I haven't really been interested in any tournament games for a while since this series, but after the stream dying a few times, casters making quite a few mistakes, and the high pitched buzz I'm off to do something else. Hopefully when I check back later Liquid ends up winning .
