Hey

After a very intense game you can end up sweaty as if you just had been running a mile

So my question is; does anyone know approximately how much kcal you burn while playing starcraft?

So check this out: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/robert_sapolsky_the_uniqueness_of_humans.html

In this talk he mentions that chess masters can burn 6000 calories a day playing in tournaments!

" ...[with] chess masters in the middle of a tournament, they are going through six to seven thousand calories a day thinking. [They are] turning on a massive physiological stress response simply with thought and doing the same thing with their bodies as if they were some baboon that’s just ripped open the stomach of their worst rival — it’s all with thought.”

Serious, competitive SC2 certainly burns calories. How much, I have no idea.

I can't believe that you just made this thread interesting.

But I guess SC2 could be comparable. If not mentally, then the physical aspect must make up for some of the loss.

Probably not that much. Sure an intense game can get your heart beating, the adrenaline pumping, and your pits sweating but I don't think it comes anywhere close to actaully running a mile.

Although at the highest pro levels I'm sure the mental energy they put into this game can also become quite physically exhausting as well.

It depends a lot on your hardware. Especially your power supply, and the percentage of its wattage that it draws from your treadmill.

Unless if you find yourself physically gasping for breath at the end of a competitive session, I honestly don't see the calories burnt being anywhere comparable to a physical workout.

The brain is the most demanding organ in the body in regards to calories. Evidence suggests that we invented cooking of meat before our brains went through it's largest changes in our ancestral history, so the securing of more calorie rich food, and access to digesting that food better (since you actually get more nutrients and calories from cooked food then from raw), helped us get a bigger brain through natural selection.

You sweat playing Sc2? You should look for medical help LOL.

And you won't have any significant calories burned, you're not exercising your muscles not nearly as much, and mental activity is light on them calories.

The question is ofc related to playing long periods, e.g.

Does 5 hours of pure laddering burn more then like 200kcal? It doesnt sound too unrealistic to me...

Why are people dumb?

Have you never had a close game that kept you shaking on the edge of your seat? Sweating is a natural stress response. You don't have to be physically exherting yourself to sweat.

I think that you could burn more than like 500-600 calories, or maybe even a lot more while playing very intense SC2.

sweating doesnt = burning calories lol thats a hugeeeeeee misconception. Swimmers are actually a good example. When swimming your body doesn't actually sweat since your body can maintain a level of temperature that it doesn't have to release heat fast. But swimmers are one of the athletes that burn the most calories in sports.

Seriously, how can this be possibly comparable to running a mile? Running a mile can make me throw up (If I'm trying to get the best time possible) and feel like I'm about to die.

Starcraft? Probably more comparable to the physical strain of jerking off with the left hand while using the mouse with the right hand. Easy....

You probably don't burn many additional calories. While the brain needs quite a bit of energy (about 20% of your daily calorie input is used to supply your brain with energy) it does so while "resting" or not really working much just like muscles burn calories even when they don't work. But different to muscles the brain doesn't need much more energy even when working hard. Only when you are learning new stuff (playing Sc2 for the first time, trying a new race) the energy demand of the brain increases more since all the information needs to get memorized. But i assume your ladder session is more like a daily or weekly routine. Stress on the other hand can make your body burn quite a bit of calories and would also explain why you sweat a little when playing.

If I remember correctly, Dreamhack had a heart rate monitor. I remember sometimes the players BPM would be over 130. If your heart is contiously beating at this level, you will burn calories.....

I don't see how you would burn 500-600 calories sitting on your ass in an air-conditioned room doing nothing more then moving your fingers.

Same stuff applies:
stressfull games --> calories get burned
non stressful games--->barerly any additional calories get burned

I think a normal player, like you or me, mostly sweats from anxiety i would say.

A pro, like Polt at Assembly might burn a few more calories than normal but i don't think it would be highly significant.

Tbh if playing SC2 made you burn a noticeable amount of calories we'd all be skinny as fuck but we're not. Also, I really don't mean this in a bad way, but look at JulyZerg, that man has done his fair share of 10 hour practice sessions and he's not skinny at all.

I was thinking of that game as well! There have been other times when players have sweated that much, but I can't even imagine all the things that are going though his head at the time.

As for the topic, it should be possible to lose some calories via playing StarCraft, but I would imagine that would only be the higher end of the spectrum.

Here's the video, you just list it I think.

But your overall physical body is doing squat, you're just sitting. (besides your hands.)

Even if you could burn such a crazy amount of calories from it, I wouldn't think it is beneficial as real physical exercise.

Reading this thread hurts my brain. Yes your body is always using calories to satisfy your basal metabolic rate, but I doubt sitting there playing a game will cause any significant increase.

I believe your brain consumes 15% of all sugars that a person consumes.

I have no doubt that after 45 mins of hard macro and micro, you might be a little hungry.
