How much, I have no idea. I can't believe that you just made this thread interesting. But I guess SC2 could be comparable. If not mentally, then the physical aspect must make up for some of the loss. I think that you could burn more than like 500-600 calories, or maybe even a lot more while playing very intense SC2.

Have you never had a close game that kept you shaking on the edge of your seat? Sweating is a natural stress response. You don't have to be physically exherting yourself to sweat. But the thread is about burning calories not sweating.

Seriously, how can this be possibly comparable to running a mile? Running a mile can make me throw up (If I'm trying to get the best time possible) and feel like I'm about to die. Starcraft? Probably more comparable to the physical strain of jerking off with the left hand while using the mouse with the right hand. Easy....

While the brain needs quite a bit of energy (about 20% of your daily calorie input is used to supply your brain with energy) it does so while "resting" or not really working much just like muscles burn calories even when they don't work. But different to muscles the brain doesn't need much more energy even when working hard. Only when you are learning new stuff (playing Sc2 for the first time, trying a new race) the energy demand of the brain increases more since all the information needs to get memorized. But i assume your ladder session is more like a daily or weekly routine. Stress on the other hand can make your body burn quite a bit of calories and would also explain why you sweat a little when playing. Im talking about laddering for 10 hours a day

I don't see how you would burn 500-600 calories sitting on your ass in an air-conditioned room doing nothing more then moving your fingers.

A pro, like Polt at Assembly might burn a few more calories than normal but i don't think it would be highly significant.

There have been other times when players have sweated that much, but I can't even imagine all the things that are going though his head at the time. As for the topic, it should be possible to lose some calories via playing StarCraft, but I would imagine that would only be the higher end of the spectrum. Here's the video, you just list it I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijf6RysNq9I

If your heart is contiously beating at this level, you will burn calories..... But your overall physical body is doing squat, you're just sitting. (besides your hands.) Even if you could burn such a crazy amount of calories from it, I wouldn't think it is beneficial as real physical exercise.
