Maybe because Zerg and Protoss seemed more unique; or that Terrans inherently have a disadvantage going into every engagement unless they engage properly (You can't simply A-move marines against AOE units like Colossus or Banelings). I know for a fact that gold league is a Zerg/Protoss fest in my division at least, I was the only Terran ranked in our top 8 and the furthest Terran was like ranked 14th-16th.

I don't know. I remember Zerg being the least played race a few months back on the ladder. It might just be the nerfs, balance change and the perception that Terran is broken/OP/Imba. I think Zerg/Protoss is just a bit easier to play at beyond silver league (Zerg is more challenging if you're below gold because of their different mechanics).

Also, late game Terran sort of blows compare to Zerg/Toss in lower leagues. That and TvTs last for a lifetime if one of us decides to go mech (which usually involves me being mech).

I switched from Terran to random. The main reason is the TvP matchup. I just don't enjoy it and never have. I find the matchup much more enjoyable from the Protoss perspective now that I'm random. I think it's mainly because Terran is pigeonholed into going mmm, 1-basing, or dying. It just gets boring doing the same thing over and over whereas Protoss has so many more viable options available. That's why I love TvZ as Terran, but it's really the only matchup as Terran that I like.

I cant wait when they make mech viable vs toss so i have options. Remove energy from Thors (skrew strike cannon, it never gets used anyway) and you'll see a much more interesting and balanced match up

Terran just isn't fun anymore. Personally for me, it's the late-game aspect that myself and other terrans are having trouble with, which results in most either quitting or switching to other races.

I mean, it is do-able, I'm not going to cry imba because I think the game is balanced very well FOR the highest skill levels, which it should be.
At the lower levels it's a bit of a hassle. So I guess it's mostly people not wanting to put in the time to reach that high of skill level to enjoy the game competitively on the ladder.

Playing terran tends to be more work than the other races, just like in bw. It feels like you need to outplay your opponent every game, and particularly in TvZ one micro mistake will quite literally cost you the game, so terrans take many frustrating losses.

meh i dont think terran is underpowered.
Terran's strenght is early game and mid game with weak economy (usually)
So if you are in the low leagues you usually have to kill your opponent in the early to mid game or the mechanics are too weak in the late game. So i usually kill my oppont early or i pretty much give up.

However terrans are starting to find more and more builds that work in the late game so im not that discouraged. Plus seeing nerfs after nerfs gives me the feeling that terran players are always abusing the strenghts so BLIZZARD nerfs it. Which in a sense means the terran are the better and more creative players (it could be just me but terran mechanics allow for more creative play)

Really i dont think terran are weak they are jsut in a slump where terrans arent finding more builds to abuse..

As for the nerfs... bunker changes all the time??/ what is the point of this change anyways..... ghosts emp radius change/ i dont see the need, just change how emp works like make it take energy within a period of time so you can micro away from it....reaper change/ enough said.....and so on

People see all these nerfs and want to try out other races out of curiosity. They'll probably go back, it might take a few months though for them to get bored of whatever race(s) they are trying out. It's just like back then when a race is strong, everyone wants to try them out, then when they're nerfed they want to try out another one. Remember back when MC was dominating and there was that 3 gate void push against Terran that was really hard to stop? And how you could block off zerg ramps with 2 pylons and a canon, etc.? There were a lot of Protoss back then.

Terran is very abusive at gold and below. Terran really rewards staying on one base for longer than the other two races and this can mean players get a lot of wins without ever expanding. I saw a lot of players getting away with stim timing attacks and stupid builds like 2 port banshee for easy, 1 base wins. I think a lot of these players hit a wall when those no longer work, but they haven't learned any other skills beyond abusing those builds. The terrans that do make it to diamond and beyond do so through more "solid" play that has a longer life. It is sort of like a protoss player who only 4 gates in every game. You hit a wall and likely give up at that point. Zerg and protoss have "fewer" builds that don't require you to expand and slowly learn that more bases is better.

As a player who went from Copper League to 2 Masters accounts i can tell you that cheese is not abusive. If you look at terran race design it is made for timing attacks, drops and unpredictable strategies, especially in early game.
About zerg and toss having less 1 base strats-
first half a year of the game in pvt was proxy gates and 4 gates, Zerg- baneling busts. Terran 1 basing can even have a late game, while other races are extremely all in with 1 base, but no one bashes them for that

yeah i was playing T for awhile, then switched to Z cause i think it is more fun overall, but i came back to T because i love mech, theres something about it, i need to get it out of my system, so back to T on the ladder it is for me. Its actually preety awesome, since mirror matchups are TERRIBLE! i dont have to deal with tvt all the time, i can actually practice fun MU vs Z and P.

Just my two cents, but I think from Diamond onwards, Terran are the hardest race mechanically, so as a result, many people switch to "more fun" (easier) races. Not me saying UP, and not trying to start a whine, just I think they benefit the most from good mechanics, and at that breakthrough point, require to play close to perfectly.

I do also want to add that the old ladder pools were extremely Terran favored, i mean go back to the first ladder pool, could anyone stand here and tell me Terran, before its nerfs and on the old blizzard ladder pool, was not severely over powered then?

I'm talking Steps of War, close position Shattered, close position Meta, Blistering Sands, Delta Quadrant, Scrap Station.

Then there was the nerfs, no matter how you slice it, Terran was the king race of ladder play for a long long time.

Regardless of whether the races are perfectly balanced now, I know that atleast at one point in the past, Terran was just stronger stats wise and map wise on ladder than today. Jeez close position Shattered, I remember scouting that and just thinking "OMG i hope he only knows 1-1-1 as an area code".

Pretty sure this has been the case for a long time, they were always over represented in bronze + silver because they are the campaign race and a lot of the casual's choose them. But I seem to remember them being under represented in all other levels for at least a good year (I do remember zerg being quite under represented when they were really UP).

Do you have any time series graphs for how the % representation has changed over time?

Tons of nerfs, it takes more work at upper levels (as you pointed out Diamond and Masters) and most importantly it's the amount of shit people give to Terran players because they think the race is OP no matter what tournament results say.

This thread is about disappearing from the ladder. So, I'll just say tournament balance does not reflect ladder balance since the maps used are not the same.

I switched from Z->T, but I think the reason is someone out there is kidnapping terrans they face on ladder. I mean that's what's implied form the title right?

Watch years form now, parents of terrans won't let them play on the ladder, all because of this post.

I think it's because anything under the best players is much harder for Terran. Especially TvP (according to most Terran players anyway). TvZ takes tons of micro, TvP takes a lot of multitasking (dropping and attacking at the same time, so lots of micro also), and TvT is considered borring and an awful matchup by a lot of people. I've played all 3 races at a Plat/Diamond level and I feel Terran is a pretty tough race to play until you have the skills to play at a really high level. So many people are just race switching I guess?

I play Terran as masters, THIS IS MY OPINION AND NOTHING MORE! Remember that. I feel like Terran is the hardest race to play, ALTHOUGH I have never really played the other races myself, it is incredibly easy to get rolled over by protoss and completely out macro'd in the mid to later stages of the game by a zerg.

My two cents on the table, I think people get frusterated with Terran when they game goes past 20 minutes because Terran is less forgiving than say protoss. So they switch to a new race. Again that is my opinion.

Yeah this is spot on. Terran has a VERY steep learning curve once you hit low diamond. All of a sudden you need to micro and multitask significantly more than at the lower levels to win games vs P and Z. As a result a lot of people switch. I myself was diamond and got so frustrated I switched to protoss for a while, but toss was too passive of a race for me so I swapped back.

It is nice to see a topic of this nature, it really gets old having no variety on the ladder, I thought there were more terrans in master but this simply isn't the case, its mainly zerg. The reason is basically the game design and there won't be more terran on ladder until there is.

The issue has come up a lot recently. I've seen a lot of explanations that include:

- TvT takes forever and so if someone wants a quick game of SC it can be a problem
- Lots of hate towards SC on Team Liquid and Reddit. No one likes getting abuse for the race they play.
- Constant nerfs are disheartening
- Lack of foreign Terran role models

Obviously no way to tell exactly what is the reason, but it's also worth noting that the drop off occurs above gold and I'd argue this is when it starts becoming very easy to lose large leads through lack of good unit control. Losing a 30 food lead to banelings or storms because you don't have the micro to limit the AoE damage is disheartening and I've considered changing on a few occassions. I've stuck at it though
