So this is a bit of a rewind but essentially I am wondering if EG forced Idra to leave Korea after GSL January over a sponsorship issue. It would certainly fit with EGs track record. A bit of evidence:
Here we have EG Idra in GSL January in Code S Ro8. After this Idra suddenly leaves Korea following his most successful run in the GSL.

Here we have Jinro in GSL March (there was no February GSL). Note the Razer Banshee headset sported by the manly Chinro. Starting in GSL March these headsets became standard attire for GLS players. Wearing the Razer headsets would be a conflict of interest for EG players who are sponsored by Steelseries, a Razer competitor.

Now that Huk is playing for EG we see him without the Razer headset.

At the same time, Idra moves back to Korea. It seems EG finally worked out a deal with GomTV. Has anyone else thought about this? I mean, I understand EGs efforts in protecting their sponsors, but if this truly is the case... it just seems kinda shitty.

You mean Ro8? Idra never made it to the Ro4 if I remember correctly. Only Jinro did. And I think you're reading too much into this haha, but interesting theory.

You really think that EG would fly idra out of korea over some fuxing headsets? Do you realize how difficult and expensive it is to move people internationally?
|
Idra left Korea because out the number of major tournaments starting in the US. Its not a conspiracy.
|
Doubt Gom would ban one of their all-time most popular attractions instead of saying "Ok, wear generic ear-buds."
Not to mention that other players bring their own headset all the time.
And IdrA has spoken at length about simply preferring America and the foreign scene over the GSL.

this shud added to the Esport Drama thread

tbh. i never have really looked at the headsets when i watch the gsl. but i guess maybe. did huk wear a different headset when he played for liquid. if he didn't well then i don't think there is a correlation.

He wore the Razer headset.

Hahahah, interesting theory. I never noticed that Huk wore a different headset o.o

Idra had been complaining for months that the only thing in Korea was the GSL, and he probably just missed being home in the States after years and years in Korea.
|
IdrA left Korea because the green mushroom eating banana people were threatening him for his BM, and IdrA said that he would rather continue being BM than give into the GMEBP terrorist demands.
That or the headset thing. Both seem equally likely.
|
If this is true, EG really fucks their players over by their shitty sponsorship deals. Just think Incontrol and SotG.
|
Idra lived in Korea for +/-3 years, most of the time in a house with almost none to talk with. US had major tournaments starting so it was worth to leave. Nothing shady here.
And if they would've forced him.. well it turned out to be great didn't it? Well maybe not skill-wise but look at the other things he is doing/has done now.

As much as Steelseries probably want to be represented by the players they sponsor, they would probably fully understand the league has its standards and own sponsors (Banshee is not only Razer) and accept it if there's no way around it.
I don't think EG would force a player to move country because of that. Actually I think its not very easy but there could be something worked out if GOM wanted them to all wear the Razer headsets, but certainly its not impossible as we can see, HuK wearing a steelseries headset.
Maybe EGAlex can enlighten us, but I highly doubt what you are saying is correct.
Edit: And I think I've already invested too much thought into it. IdrA once said that he will leave or leaves Korea as soon as its worth it. The scene was and is rising, there's so much money to earn and with his level he could have won a lot - but right now the correct choice is to Korea as the level is just a lot higher and IdrA will use this chance to improve massively again while already being really good.
I think right now he's slumping a bit, at least from the results I saw, but he has a good mentality to recover (and yes, I mean it). He does rage, tilt and sometimes does stupid things, but he's a great worker and trains hard.

leather gracket idra without the beard was definitely my favorite.

I bet your onto something. Him leaving Korea was very strange, but IF this is true, then Idra handled it like a pro. I'm not saying your right, I'm saying its plausible, 25%-35% it was a factor.

This. Idra has said it multiple times when he left, that it made more sense to participate in foreign tournaments.

Stop drumming up unnecesary drama. This is a nonissue.

Hm. That is an interesting fact with the headsets. Never noticed that before.
