5. How does a basilisk operate?
The short answer is: we mustn't say. Detailed information is classified beyond Top Secret.
The longer answer is based on a popular-science article by Berryman (New Scientist, 2001), which outlines his thinking. He imagined the human mind as a formal, deterministic computational system -- a system that, as predicted by a variant of Gödel's Theorem in mathematics, can be crashed by thoughts which the mind is physically or logically incapable of thinking. The Logical Imaging Technique presents such a thought in purely visual form as a basilisk image which our optic nerves can't help but accept. The result is disastrous, like a software stealth-virus smuggled into the brain.
A friend of mine sent me a picture over msn which is what this article is describing
here's the image in the spoiler if anyone wants to take a gander at it

This is...well this is pretty freaking interesting.
I want to see the real picture, but I don't want to "crash" O_O.
Unless of course it's BS, and then...meh.

This shit seriously scares me.A single picture that can kill almost instantly?
|
I looked at it for about 20 seconds, friend that linked it to me looked at it for a couple minutes. We're still alive after an hour so far. xD

I looked at the thing for a couple of seconds. Hopefully my brain doesn't fry.
This is pretty scary.

Complete and utter hogwash. Just a crude way to get clicks and propogate chain mails.

The image is just a section of the mandelbrot set, which was slightly modified and bent in 3D, nothing "mindcrashing"

Sounds like good old fashion bullshite
|
Wow.. my bullshit detector is off the charts. So for some reason the mind will crash if it encounters a certain image? A specific arrangement of photons will crash the brain because it is ''incapable of physically thinking it''? Bull and shit.
Now for reasons. The arrangement of that photons hit the eye will not cause a signal to go from the eye to the brain which will shut off the brain. How would it? What path would the eletrical signals take for the brain to do the previously though impossible and crash itself (I'm assuming it renders you unconcious)? At worst you may get a headache from your brain not interpreting images correctly (it's how optical illusions work what you see is mostly what your brain expects to see), but you wouldn't crash. The brain cannot shut itself off the only way to do that is by trauma or lack of nutrients. (sleep is technically not unconcious)

Hey, if this doesn't kill you, the Boogeyman in your closet or the alligator in the toilet will.

Tbh that fractal image doesnt really looks like a parrot, its birdish, but not a parrot :D And it doesnt fry my cpu.

If it can't kill my PC, it can't kill me! hehe. Very interesting concept though for sure.

I'm kind of worried my eyes hurt when I looked at it.

I looked at it. While its creepy in an unsettling way because of preconceived expectations i would imagine. I dont think it killed me.

I don't understand. For example at the picture linked: while as a whole it doesn't make any sense if you pay attention and see it in segments you will see different stuff:the background, the holy shit nvm i just saw the bird lol. K now that's spooky though i highly doubt it will crash your brain.

The point is you look at the picture, stare at it for a while, then read where it says it will kill you for looking at it. It's bullcrap :p

from wikipedia:
"Basilisk" and "Medusa weapons"[16] are mythological terms used by various authors, notably David Langford, in Different Kinds of Darkness and related short stories to describe a (fictional) class of image or sensation which causes death or harm to anyone who views it.
Langford's fictional basilisk images, or BLITs,[17] are so deadly to the characters that all information about them, including the death toll when they first appear in the story, is classified; however, each of them is given a name or number, and a reasoning common to such stories is provided. From Langford's fictional "comp.basilisk" Newsgroup FAQ:[18]
"...the human mind as a formal, deterministic computational system -- a system that, as predicted by a variant of Gödel's Theorem in mathematics, can be crashed by thoughts which the mind is physically or logically incapable of thinking. The Logical Imaging Technique presents such a thought in purely visual form as a basilisk image which our optic nerves can't help but accept. The result is disastrous, like a software stealth-virus smuggled into the brain."
A mock-up of the first Basilisk image to appear in Langford's stories, known as "The Parrot," was generated by an enterprising fan[19] and posted on a popular image-hosting website as a prank in late September, 2007.[20]
So its fake

Uhh. Where do all these bullshit news come from. UFO's over Jerusalem & killer images ROFL
I looked at the picture, it was not pretty.

This is ridiculous, it's impossible to "crash the brain" through a simple image, just ridiculous.
DMT, smoked, is probably the biggest mind melting experience we know, and people can smoke that multiple times a day and be normal afterwards.

maybe if I'm on PCP yes possible brain damage but now.. all I see is a beautiful picture
well, to be honest it's not beautiful. I imagine if there is something in this world that could actually kill a person via just image then it has to be sadako being IRL.

It might be possible. Who knows?
For example, you can't normally crash notepad by typing various phrases into it, or strings of characters. But is there a possibility that if you put in a long and complicated enough string of phrases into notepad in the right order and timing, you could manipulate the transistors in your CPU or some other part of your computer that process this signal to violate their engineered safety factors and crash?
Any such solution to this problem would be retardedly complicated, however, and far outside of the grasp of our current science/knowledge.
|
Anyone who actually believed in that should be eliminated anyway

Im pretty sure captian picard was going to use this exact thing vs the collective in episode "I, borg" number 23 from season 5 of the next generation...

Any such solution to this problem would be retardedly complicated, however, and far outside of the grasp of our current science/knowledge. anyone that knows anything about the brain does. It's not possible, period. The human brains have so many saftey devices for not frying including shutting down and rebooting. No image can crash your brain no matter what it does. The thing you are suggesting is the same as it "Might be possible" to move straight through a wall. Whenever you touch a wall some cells will leave your body they will even pass a bit into the wall because of the molecules structure. Now imagine one cell having the enormous luck of fitting into holes the entire way to get out the other side, do that times a couple of billion and you have yourself a man that just went through a wall.
It's flawed logic, the brain isn't a computer that is going to short curcuit because of a few weird commands, to break a brain you need to abuse it constantly enough for it to lock down and not boot up again. A brain isn't a computer it's just a likness becuase they share some similarities, your brain can't delete system 32 on its own.
|
It might be possible. Who knows?
Yeah, it already is. Its called "torture and long term abuse".
This article is kind of dumb. Its ridiculously obvious that the human mind can be given "input" that it can't "logically process" and thus, "breaks", we just call it something else, torture, abuse, etc. Blast loud music at someone long enough and they'll go insane. Isn't that a case of "Brain getting input that it can't process and breaks" lol?
The Human brain already can be manipulated like a computer, it has been manipulated like a computer, we just don't think of it that way.

This.
The op picture is all bs, however flashing patterns will cause people to "crash" and die. I honestly don't know why nobody mentioned this till now, especially with all the comments that basically say "the brain cannot crash, evar".
Also, I recall seeing something like this in the book Snow Crash.

Actually all scientific info points to the impossibility of triggering seizures in people without preexisting photosensitive epilepsy.

I know, right? I am in utter disbelief at the number of people posting as if this was even meant to be a prank. -_-
It's a story. A total "what if?" scenario. I mean, aside from the text right at the top of the "article" saying that it's a story, there's this little tidbit:
9. How can I get permission to display images on my website?
This is a news.announce.newusers question, but keeps cropping up here. In brief: you can't, without a rarely granted government licence. Using anything other than plain ASCII/ANSI text on websites or in e-mail is a guaranteed way of terminating your net account. We're all nostalgic about the old, colourful web, and about television, but today's risks are simply too great.
And this is clearly something that has happened! Right!? /facepalm

There are images that will literally break ppl but not really shut em down imo. That would take more than just visual input.

I will even add to your comment as a Software Engineer. You can't crash notepad by typing a complex or "insane" string of symbols. The worst that could happen would be a out of space exception due to having a file bigger than your HD space =/ (Which could be related to long term torture for a human being I guess). There is also nothing binding the CPU and notepad directly. Notepad is not a compiler and it doesn't care of the input you give it, it doesn't analyze it and don't give a fuck about any timing you can think of.
So yeah, you won't crash your CPU intentionality with notepad and you will never crash your brain due to an unmanaged throw exception. The brain has a fuckton of try/catch clauses.....

The image has little relevance to the topic. It's from a creepy thread in 4chan. and the "basilisk" is from a fiction book lol.

I simply assumed my brain superior to a simple image. The thought of an image actually able to damage the brain is so outlandish, I never even considered it was meant that way. If you could kill people with imagery, it for sure would have turned up a whole lot more and probably on 4chan before it shows up here.

I don't think system crashing inputs is that uncommon for humans, but the diversity means it is very unlikely that a universal input of any sort exists..... It is even less likely in sets stimulus that is not very novel to evolution (a simple static image).
Frankly if you add in acceleration/orientation input from the middle ear, serious impedance of function from input is trivial.
