Main problem is that watching GSL is insanely overpriced to ever get big. Only hardcore fans are willing to pay for the stream or on-demand vods. I am not sure but afaik OSL and MSL were free to watch on TV from the start so alot of people who never played it could get hooked by friends who recommended it to them. As long as you have to pay a rather large amount to watch it no one will who doesnt already love it.
Now you may say: But theres a free low quality stream! Yes there is, but have u ever tried it since season 2 and it worked and wasnt already full?
If they ever want to grow the sc2 fanbase they need to really offer it for free an finance that with ads or sponsors or they will never get enough people who will pay for premium content or watch it live on stage. It simply cant grow the way its run right now
just my 2 cents sorry for bad english

they shoulda kept 2010 format. 2011 format is way to confusing and not exciting in any way. I would go as far as to claim that the current format is unacceptable. The fact that we are used to retarded qualification processes as a gaming community is not an excuse. If you wanna hit big follow the format of well established organizations, NFL, UEFA, and so on and so forth.

Id just like to see longer games in bigger maps... The average match time is what.. 15 min? Not even? And thats basicly 10 min real time.. which 3/4 of it is building time..
The players with higer skills would really benefit from having bigger maps. We would see more of a difference in skill in the pro players cause right now its pretty much a coin toss in every match because every good player is capable of winning games with cheese. And also SC2 is not forgiving.
A small error can cost you the match which is something i dont really like.. You have to win a game with multiple good plays and tactics.. Winning a game because youre opponent made a small mistake is just lame.

somehow wandered in here and would like to point out that in 7 years, maybe 4 maps in the map pool on warcraft 3 ladder were changed by blizzard..
dunno what'll happen with sc2 but the precedent ain't good.

its even ridiculous they shut down restreams imho. just look at it that way: who watches them? mostly fans that arent willing or cant pay the premium stream for whatever reason so they would like to watch the free stream wich they cant because its always full or not working so the restreams provide a service wich gom isnt able to provide obviously and they get it for free because it reaches a bigger audience who may potentially buy the hq stuff in future seasons. Maybe im missing something here but this looks extremely short sighted to me and as is see it can only fail if they wont change that.

To be honest, the majority of the GSL is hardly worth watching.
For example Julyzerg vs. Odin on Scrap Station: Odin attack moves into 2 overlords because their positioned slightly in front of July's army to do exactly that...stop the Terran effectively attack moving. He then stims the marines backwards in one direction, with no split. Now, Odin may well have done other things in the game far better than I am capable of, but these are two mistakes that I dont make.
Or take NaDa vs. MC: have I thought of making a shit ton of Marauder and Viking vs. a Protoss going gate units+colossus? Oh, you know what, I have - the match was just dull, and pretty predictable - 0 drama factor, and these are two of the better players in the competition, on one of the biggest maps available. I'm thinking...this is NaDa and the GSL3 champion, I should be fucking pumped, but the reality is I cant even be bothered to finish watching, a combination of the players, the units, the maps and the tournament format are leaving me disinterested.
BUT: I believe the changes required are smaller than many people are suggesting, more some tweaking of the game, tweaking the map pool, splash of new units with HotS would see the whole situation made pretty sweet.

10 dollars a month isn't bad even if you don't have a job
You can literally go mow someones grass and have enough
you can FIND 10$ on the ground if you look hard enough for a month..

yea maybe in the US everyone owns a credit card and paypal account even if they are between 13 and 18 years old

Yes but if you don't have a job, that $10 should probably not go to Gom.

People still think the internet is some scary place where even the most respectable sites that tons of other people use will still steal you CC info?
Tell your mom to do some research and learn about how modern transactions work.

Could someone from TL make a summarizing post that says what the current BW ratings are and what the current GSL veweirship numbers are. There's just too much stuff in this thread to even try and read it now.

Maybe we are just the odd ones out though, not sure.

Here is the problem with your points. One people are not having problems with the free stream. All the people who watch the GSL free stream watch it live every night and its fine for them. Maybe a bit of overload on the GOM site due to activity but that affects everyone.
The other point is that they DO get enough people to watch. They had spectacular numbers for their first three seasons, and the marquee big matches had strong showings as you would expect. Yes, if it was free, MORE people would watch (but live, doubtful). You have to understand that only the hardcore of the hardcore will wake up at 4am to watch a video game tournament, no matter how big it is. Even the biggest sports fan will not wake up to watch a 4-9 am games on a daily basis. So really the hardcore fans already have their passes. They opened up the free stream in case someone wants to check in once in a while, and not feel obligated to with paying.
And of course, the notion that there needs to be live viewers for this to be successful needs to go. I just don't understand why this would be the case. Watching the games at the comfort of your own home is absolutely better. You can multi-task in between games. Discuss them with all your friends. You watch close up in your HQ screen (rather than a muffled live viewing). The only thing is the atmosphere, which wouldn't be noticeable anyway unless its the championship or something.

Tbh I stopped watching SC2 games as well. They're just super boring, BW Pro Games are much much more exciting. The OSL Ro8 today for example was awesome )

Its not ridiculous. They want people to use the GOM player. They are sponsored by Gretech. They also want people to watch their streams so they can get more accurate numbers to show to potential companies.
If you are waking up at 4am to watch SC2, how is $10 overpriced? You get so many hours of content its not even a contest. It is probably the cheapest entertainment in history, ever.
