One important point which I don't believe has been relayed yet is that the switch to showing RealID on the forums will only happen with the new forum systems we're launching for StarCraft II shortly before its release, and a new forum system for World of Warcraft launching shortly before the release of Cataclysm. All posts here on the current World of Warcraft forums, or any of our classic Battle.net forums, will remain as-is. They won't (and can't) automatically switch to showing a real first and last name. All posts in the future on the new forum systems will be an opt-in choice and ample warning will be given that you're posting with your real first and last name. Source: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25712374700&sid=1&pageNo=34#667 This confuses me. I get that they're going to warn you before you post with your real name, but does that mean you can choose not to have your real name posted when you post? Somehow I doubt that's what's going to happen as it undermines the whole system. It seems more like you're in or you're out. Though I'm up for clarification on this. I'm guessing he's just referring to how the old forums will still be kept the way they are.

LOL thats awesome Hopefully the 15000 posts or so on Blizzard forums will get them to understand. Of course, this only lowers my faith in Blizzard.

Just to respond to those that don't think we read through all of these responses and threads, we do and have been. We will continue monitoring feedback as well. We put a lot of thought into this change and have a long-term vision for the Real ID service and wanted to make sure that we communicated ahead of time and very clearly as to what will be changing and how. Keep in mind that posting is optional, and we recognize that some players will choose not to utilize the Real ID feature in game or post on the forums and support everyone's individual choice on using or not using it. This is obviously new ground for us and for you as well, but we want to make sure we're creating a great social-gaming service that people will want to use. We just want to make sure that if people are sharing feedback, that they keep it constructive, and yes, as I said, we are reading. I EAGERLY await the shitstorm, in light of the fact that they have 11,000 posts and still say "too fucking bad". Seriously, fuck that response.

I bet they'll be reading after the launch happens. I mean, it's been up for less than a day, and there are already 13000 + posts. Let me say that again in plain english. Thirteen THOUSAND posts. In just 11 hours. See where it began: WoW forums And that youtube clip cracked me up. I've always loved the hitler stuff.

At this rate it would appear that the thing that will stop sc2 as a major esport is blizzard itself.

A bully will continue to be a bully, a troll will continue to be a troll. There is no way any logical train of thought can result in the assumption that an undesirable poster will decrease their undesirable activity when they are still provided a certain degree of separation from their intended target. Arguments against providing real life names aside (which are valid) - [Cairneey] still remains as anonymous to me as [Joe Schmo] - and [Joe Schmo] knows this and will continue to act accordingly. In short - there are no more repercussions for undesirable posters with this new system than there are now, given the above. In fact, just as much would be accomplished if all forum posters were relegated to posting on one and only one character, with the option to show (but not post on) other characters on their account with the click of a button on their avatar. There is no need to use real-life names, even if creating a larger social network is what is intended. If someone sees me on the forums and wishes to talk with me in game, there is already an avenue for that. If things go well and we mutually decide to ramp up our relationship to exchange personal information - including real-life names - there's already an avenue for that. So the challenge, I guess, is explaining to everyone just how having real-life names will offer any improvement at all to the system already in place. 'Lifting the veil of anonymity' is not an argument and is hollow at best. Providing a more social environment is also not an argument, seeing as how we have the ability to do so right now - at our own pace and at our own discretion. ¸..• '¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.•' .•'¨¨)) Frejya -:¦:- ((¸¸.•' ...•' -:¦:- This is prob one of the most logical posts Ive seen on the subject posted by one of the wow forum MVPs Ugh that writing is like fingernails on a blackboard. I guess we should all try to be content with paragraphs, punctuation and capitalization. Any higher standards than those will guarantee disappointment. Lifting the veil of anonymity encourages people to behave consistently online and in person. I've never heard of anyone being mean in person but nice online. But of course there are many people who are nice in person but mean online. People are worried about their forum posts being in a public record because of job opportunities or academic opportunities or what friends/families would think of them. (Many of these people are against Blizzard's change because of this. They realize that if they continue to behave the way they do, which they like to do, they'd have negative consequences.) They would act more respectfully and politely or they wouldn't participate at all. They wouldn't automatically use a gaming forum as their outlet for being a disrespectful asshole. It does provide a more social environment for some people because using an alias and having a default state of anonymity are childish aspects of the gaming world. They deter people from having a normal social experience. Every respectable pastime involves people using real identities with each other. It's natural that a person who doesn't care about a thing like that, such as Frejya, needs someone to explain it to them.

I felt that the emphasis of privacy was zero while playing the beta. I really don't want people that I add as friends to see who my other friends are. I also do not want to show when I played and how much I played, if I'm online or not (maybe there was an appear offline mode that I missed), and I do not want people to know my real name. This has probably already been posted, but is there anything preventing people from making a new email account with a fake name? I think I'll have 3 options for choosing a fake name: 1. something really epic, like Batman bin Suparman 2. name of someone I hate. maybe my boss 3. girls name

The option is wether or not you want your character name displayed in addition to your real name, but you cannot take your real name off the forums if you post there. The option is to use the forums or not. Judging by the poll in the OP, looks like only 15% of SC2 players will be using their forum.

I personally would rather stick to other better moderated forums even if blizzard does eliminate spam and abuse.
