Are you prepared for another exciting, action-packed, LAN party?
Well get ready, because the Fall 2008 BYOC is under way!
This semesters event will be held on November 22nd at the Pennsylvania College of Technology field house located in Williamsport Pennsylvania! The theme is Ninja's and Pirates-so be ready to choose your side!
Last semester we pulled in over 250 gamers from all over the east coast, this makes us the largest LAN party in Pennsylvania! We expect no less this time around!
All participants will be required to register for the tournaments before they start. Tournament registration will take place on a first come first served basis on the day of the event. Official tournament rules will be listed in the event program as well as on this page.
This year there will be three tiers of tournaments. We decided to do a tiered system to allow for more tournaments, but still reward the bigger ones with better prizes. By doing so, this should ensure that everyone in every level of gaming skills should have a great tournament experience! The tier system works as such:
* Tier 1: 4 major games o These tournaments will be the focus of the event, and thus will never run parallel with another major tournament. The games will be announced and broadcasted on the main projector. The prizes will be the largest prizes (other than the door prizes) of the LAN party
* Consoles o Halo 3 o Rock Band
* PC o Counter Strike: Source o Call of Duty 4
* Tier 2: 4 other games o These tournaments will feature popular games that just weren't feasible to offer a large prize for. These tournaments may run parallel to another tournament for time constraints. Prizes will still be significant, but of a lesser amount than the Tier 1 tournaments
* Consoles o Soul Caliber 4 o Madden '09
* PC o Starcraft: Brood War o F.E.A.R. Combat
* Tier 3: spontaneous tournaments o These tournaments may or may not happen. If there is an interest in a certain game we may create an on the fly tournament and give out a smaller prize (such as free food or t-shirts).
* Consoles o MarioKart Wii o Super Smash Bros.
* PC o WoW Level Race
Register today at http://byoc.acm.pct.edu! Only select a seat if you plan on participating in PC gaming, and if no seats are available, we will have plenty more available first come, first serve at the event.
A waiver will be available soon for download, and should be filled out prior to the event by guests under 18 years of age.
Thanks for checking us out, and get ready for some of the best gaming in Pennsylvania!

I want to stress that this is not a serious SC tournament like WCG and what not. Its simply for fun, and the prizes are not anything substantial. Last year, the prize for SC was a SteelSeries Headset, Bottle of Bawls, Mousepad, and lots of random swag.
Also, the LAN is completely free to enter, but make sure you bring money for food and drinks.
|
whoa free! i like the sound of that!!
lans here cost $25 plus you have to supply food and drink
|
|
Wow level race makes me smile. I bet everyone participating will have gotten a friend on WoW, so as to get 3x exp and teleport for free -.-
|
haha this would be cool to go to! Williamsport is a bit of a drive though
|
Actually, if the WoW level race happens it would be on a private server (approved by blizz ofc). You wouldn't be able to do something like that.

jk LAN is always good!

wow nice, i would definatly try to go to this. is williams port near lycoming college?
|
If we were free, NrG.FantacY and I would definately drive down if there were alot of TL people meeting up around this LAN. Unfortunately, we don't really have any time to do so until Winter Break, and we are (I still think it's going on) going to the Philly meetup near Christmas.

That goes for the other games too. We play popular games on campus, not games which are more respected by esports. Besides, the chances of us actually doing the WoW tournament are slim to none.

WorpeX, do you know the map pool for the Starcraft tournament?
Like I'm just wondering what I should practice beforehand. I don't want to be practicing Python/Tau/Longinus and show up and everyone is playing BGH or Fastest.
Edit: Just for clarification I guess I wouldn't mind if BGH or Fastest was in the map pool but then it'd be auto win for low money players because everyone knows BGH/Fastest players have no talent.

Good question! Their aren't very many rules actually:
* Single Elimination * Players decide on map * 32 player cap * Final map, best 2/3 * Players must save replays for discrepancies * Games must be played on fastest speed
That's really it. As far as the map pool goes, their isn't a set map pool. If two players decide that they want to play on BGH they can, however both players must agree on the map. We've so far never had any problems with this system (this is the third tournament now). I personally hate fastest maps like BGH also, and so far I haven't ever had to play on it. People have though in the past. We've never had any disputes on the map used, but if it happens just give me a shout.
Now, if you really enjoy maps like Python, Blue Storm, Tau and other custom maps, I would suggest you put them on a flash drive before the event so you can put the maps on your opponents computers easily. I will have them on mine, but i'll be running around getting other players settled, so it would be faster for you to do it yourself.

Final map, best 2/3? Do you mean final round? So is every game a best of 3 or just the finals?
Best of 1 scares me. I'm glad though that it says play on fastest and save replays. Even WCG this year couldn't handle that, like what the fuck lol. Although no one really listened to what WCG had to say about playing on "Faster" speed setting.
From my understanding you register for tournaments at the door, right? I believe I read this starts at noon and ends midnight - is dat rite? I wanna make sure I get in at the right time so I can win dat prize.
|
yes yes, final game is a bo3, the rest are bo1. And yes, its from noon to noon.

Quick question for anyone who has ever been to a lan before:
What can I expect when going to a BYOC lan event? What should I bring, any necessities? I don't play SC with a mousepad, should I bring one for this just incase the table is like messy?
THANKSSSSS.
|
Well, I don't know if I'd be able to answer all of your questions, but we do have a pretty nice image gallery up from last semesters BYOC, im sure that will answer many of your questions:
http://gallery.acm.pct.edu/main.php/v/BYOC-Spring08/
For what to bring, i would refer to this link:
http://byoc.acm.pct.edu/whattobring
I would bring a mousepad, even if you don't usually use one its nice to have just in case your mouse doesn't work on our tables. Besides, their fairly easy to carry around and are cheap as hell.
