As the seconds count down for the largest StarCraft:BroodWar tournament since TSL2, I reminisce on all the hard work that has gone into ISL. Great thanks goes out to all of the sponsors, all of the staff, and all of the great players now making this a well rounded, 32 player showdown. Without further hesitation, here's a quick reflection of the progress of ISL on teamliquid.
The countdown for the ISL Round of 32, in order, all of what took place up to this point.
All of the dedication, all of the hours of work, now we have finally arrived. Saturday March 26th at 19CET the beginning of the $1,000 will slowly creep into one of these players pockets:

Now sit back, relax, and grab your popcorn, this is going to be good.

But scheduling it at the same time as the TSL is really not doing this tourney good, something should be done about that

Is that Sayle's girlfriend? She has a cute voice.

Woah, random finn in top16 defeating Yayba :o

Napoleon isn't exactly a nobody lol.
He is kinda oldschool ( He was in mgz) etc... ) but he was always a good player.

random? dude napoleon is probably the best Finnish player of all time along with maybe ovvi and that fat protoss... umm, madclaw. Sure it was an upset, since he's been inactive (and mostly playing 2v2) but it certainly wasnt too unlikely, especially not on those maps.

I was really hoping for something more professional once the Ro32 started. This is why I offered my services with graphics and the like.
But I can't watch this without putting it on mute.
Don't get me wrong, the casters seem like cool dudes... but it's just not entertaining or enjoyable to hear what amounts to basically a voice chat channel passing itself off as a tournament cast. Especially a tournament that claims to be the "biggest foreigner event since the TSL2."
The BM, even if it's in jest or if they feel its warranted, doesn't help either. It really seems like it's only funny to the guys in the tournament themselves.
Great effort, entertaining games, but the lack of professionalism is really hurting this. The tournament could be so much bigger otherwise.

Hey there! Thank you so much for your response about this tournament. If I might, I'd like to address a few things here. This is the FIRST ISL. This means there will be mistakes, it won't be perfect and we will be trying to have some fun to see what our viewers will like during this event. As for professionalism, that is something that can always be worked on. I'm sorry if you were offended by any of the jokes that were said on air today. I will agree that our casting was a bit of a mess because we ended up having 4 people hanging out and attempting to cast the event. This will change in the future, so that this situation will not happen again. This is a very big foreigner ran event.
The "bad manners" was not really bad manners. It was actually us joking around, because the general response of people in the chat was that they loved it. When we saw they didn't like something, we changed our actions to try to please them. This is part of what every casting/broadcasting group does. They test the water to see what their viewers like and dislike. So please keep this in mind that this was the FIRST one and we will be using the information of today's cast to help improve future casts. We do hope to make this tournament very big for the broodwar community. So please stay tuned into future casts. We hope that you will be pleased with the future results. Thank you again for your feedback! <3 ^_^

I didn't like the BM. It was amusing in the beginning, but it was a 9 and a half hour cast, and its not like it evolved at all.
Kinda represents my feelings on sayle's guests. Sometimes they have insightful things to say; that sayle hadn't touched on , and I didn't consider(I think it would be really entertaining if there was the opposite of the KasPra show, where there is an A level player that talks about their mindset in a series of games (this is not commenting on the entertainment of the KasPra show)). But unfortunately it seems like their strategic input is more of an occurrence rather than a constant. And it seems to go away completely when there are more than 2 guests at once.
I voted "not fine" but I am no where near against it as the guy who shuts off the sound. I just find it as something that I would change.
I hope this isn't referring to in game player BM, because I'm going to look like a dick for railing on the cast unprovoked, and I do like that BM. It is rare enough and varied enough to be a welcomed change of pace.
|
i feel the bm was hilarious and added much to the cast. I think a lot of foreigner casts lack the enthusiasm of their korean counterparts, and humor helps to bring them to that level.
|
on the bm topic
the 2 things i didnt like was game being bm with tessla (sexist jokes) and of course the bm against szajna ¬¬"

Well, let me be clear, it's not that I found any of the BM offensive. Competitive gaming is always going to have BM, but, as part of the cast, it detracts from the overall professionalism. In my opinion, that's the real issue at hand here. A little BM comment here or there never hurt; there's always a time and a place.
I suppose I wasn't clear, but my comments were more about how the casts are "4 people hanging out and attempting to cast."
That's always fun for a regular stream, but, as you say:
This is a very big foreigner ran event.
What I've seen thus far just pales in comparison to other productions to come out of the scbw community over the past few years. I guess I just had far greater expectations than I should have for this.
With sc2 taking the spotlight on all things competitive in the foreign scene, I was looking forward to a solid and professionally run tournament.
I understand that it's the first outing for this event, so I suppose I should be less critical. Nonetheless, I think voicing concerns like this can help with future iterations of the ISL.
I feel that if this tournament is to be taken seriously, it ought to take itself seriously.

I have to agree with this guy right here . Normally the casts are laid back and w/e it's fine but tbh I watched the first two hours today or so and I felt that half of the games weren't even casted and half-way into some games they just start getting back to what's going on. On the other end of that, I think it was the highest view count today maybe that just being ro32 or w/e but more viewers is better.

nice job napo, sziky, ace!

Can't say I disagree. We already discussed on fixing that way before responding to the post occured. Four people in a cast is way too much. By professional do you mean more boring, or less curse words?
For the other topic, I'd like to leave it up for more discussion. Carry on plox.

I have to disagree that the cast was not professional. I think having friendly atmosphere in the cast does keep it from going really boring, specially if the event is something like 7~ hours long. If its mechanically straight forward casting with exact same style... I would have fallen sleep in about 2 hours or got bored to death. Also its nice bonus that sometimes there's revealing information happenings in the cast (change of bonus player, smurf name revelations and love confessions ).
When last night we saw something like 3 games back to back going 4 hat hydra and protoss playing totally standard... I found it more better that first few minutes of the game we're not just about the game.
Only part in the cast that I found oddly unprofessional, we're the comments of that pikatchu time to time. She was funny, specially when she battled with game, but darn that girl did some awkward comments about matches time to time. But in the way it was entertaining and Sayle going "oh.... *silence for few secs* okey" and continue casting, made me giggle hard cause it was so awkward moment .
Anyways, huge thanks for great casting and event! And Game, you! No more cheering for ya! I really hoped you could have won this whole tournament to make everyone rage(or rejoice )!

Cursing / bm / w.e is fine but if they are going to chit chat about why joekim's dog is licking himself mid game do it early-game, not when there is somewhat important scouting/tech going on... I find it a little hard to keep interest, I only picked this instance out because it could be humorous(bad example against my argument some would say) to some but there were many drawn out random conversations mid game.

Just want to echo draw. Try to keep it at least remotely relevant when there's actually things happening in the game...

Gotta say that I did miss this completely. And agree also with that there should be more commentary when things are happening ingame. I think that commentary should be in the comfort zone; where its relaxed, entertaining and professional. I guess there was some moments where one of those elements went overboard and could be toned to make it better (your example is great one). Have to keep in mind that they are doing this free .

dRaW: Uhh... was this dog licking thing going on while I was refereeing/playing? dRaW + Shauni: In principle that sounds great... but casting for 9 hours isn't exactly ideal for staying focused.
|
well in terms of casting: i actually wasn't intending to cast today. i only had a couple hours of sleep after coming back from a party and i really wanted to cop some more shut-eye, since i had some important things to do tonight. yet in hindsight, i tuned in because of my bets. there were some necessary things i needed to say during the games, and most of the unnecessary things i've stated were on the basis of awkward dead time or silence and/or stirring up somewhat crude entertainment vitals. due to my lack of energy, i was barely involved in the cast. however, i will apologize if viewers are appalled by my persona. everyone is throwing around the word "professionalism" when nobody involved is pertaining to any of their sacrifices in this tournament as a profession. furthermore, nobody is getting paid. in reference to the jokes and insults, 99.9% of the time it's for kicks & giggles. i understand that many people do not comprehend the complexity of sarcasm and overly-exaggerated notions that are apparent in the casts. all in all, i love this game and i use my knowledge as well as my talent to keep it substantially alive. any device, any idea, any product, any process can be developed and evolved into something better. yet that coincides with incentive and the only thing that can be judged derives from every individual's passion.

I think the whole Game vs Tesla thing went a bit overboard. Well, that's a huge understatement. It just got old really fast, and it was always Game who initiated it. I am grateful for what you guys are doing, and I have high respect of Game's actual commentating of the games, but try to focus on the game and the players. Sayle really tried his best to keep the focus on the games, so props to him.
|
As Sayle said, it was a "sausage fest" with all the rampant misogynist "jokes" (?) from Game. It was annoying. It is not about getting all serious and pompous about E-sports and shit like that, but those jokes were really lame. At the same time, Game offered the best insight on the games, with a good eye for build orders and strategy. Sayle and Game work quite well as a duo. It was funny went Tesla said "Julie fighting" like in koreans game. Good imitation of Pikachu too. It is cool to have a girl around, but it would be better if she talked a little more about the games.
All in all, it was cool. Sayle was as good as usual.

Tesla and Game will no longer be in the same cast. Ro16 casts will either be me + Game (+ Joekim) or me + Tesla (+ Joekim). Joekim in brackets since he's not technically an official caster but he always shows up anyway
I agree that the Ro32 cast wasn't as good as I would have liked, so apologies for that. There are certainly improvements we can make and we're aware of them. On the other hand, Game is still "running the show" here, so it's still ultimately up to him how much changes.
|
despite the criticism, thank you Sayle and the casts!
|
^^ yes. Despite criticism of one aspect, I still love English casts, love the interviews, and love the ISL overall.
|
I agree with some of the criticism, but on the whole the casters are doing a good job. So big thanks to all involved!
|
understood its long ass casting but you dont have to do 9hours in one shot, as much fun as bw watching is everything in moderation, i believe I stopped after 2hrs. Also it was just a few things, not like filling space/talking random is that bad... it was just the times that some of the random conversations did happen, if you rewatch the vods you will realize. Yeah it's for free and there can be a lack of motivation for professionalism but no one is saying to be a korean commentator we know it will be laid back, just as mentioned earlier the timing of said conversations can be better managed.
edit: my comments were not really to be detrimental as the other casts were better than this particular day, maybe just the number of casters exceed the focus required. *which was issued by game/sayle already*
All issues aside the tournament has been running smoothly so thanks for the people running the tourny/casters, etc the work is appreciated.

damn too curious so i spoilered myself^^ waiting for the VODs!

Despite not being best friends with game and joekim, from what I've heard the casting is fine. I only watched a couple games though.
In any case joekim I'll be able to bo5 you next saturday. Until then I've got a shitload of schoolwork.

hey, does somebody know where i can find the game of Kolll vs Mamon?? Thx alot!
|
They should be uploaded to the youtube channel (check op) by Sayle sometime soon if not already.
|
i can't find them there maybe i'm just too dumb...
|
You're right. EleGant casted those and he hasn't uploaded them to his stream or the youtube channel yet, they'll be up sometime soon however.
|
Koll vs Mamon was casted by Elegant[aov] and it's not been uploaded anywhere yet. Waiting to watch these games myself.

All of the VODs of the games that I casted are being uploaded right now. I expect they'll be done in a few hours time. I'll post an update tomorrow morning to confirm they're up, but I won't have time to do a proper listing in the OP (like I did for Ro56) until I get home in the evening. If you can't wait, just keep refreshing the page at www.youtube.com/user/iccupbw :p
I have no idea when the games casted by Elegant (most notably Mamon vs Kolll) will be up.
Also, I had a lengthy chat with Tesla (pikachu girl) and Game today about the casts. Hopefully we'll be able to provide a much better experience in the Ro16, so please do continue to support the event, and of course the sponsors ^^
Edit: Unfortunately, due to several poor recording splits as well as some slip-ups during the casts, there will be spoilers of some matches in unrelated VODs. For example, the Bakuryu vs Dragon match is spoiled at the beginning of the VOD for Ramms vs Cute. If you wish to watch all the matches as spoiler-free as possible, I suggest watching the VODs in the same order that they are uploaded.
I also just realized that I forgot to put "ISL Ro32" in the VOD names like I did for the Ro56. Guess I'll have to fix it tomorrow when the uploads are done.

Saturday is CL playoffs at 19:00 CET and then ISL Ro16 at 20:30 CET, so it would have to be before those. The details are up to you guys. Just let me know when you want me to be online to cast.
VODs are not done yet. My browser crashed after uploading only a couple of videos so I had to restart it just now :/

I gotta go, will finish when back or feel free to take over.

I really love the cast, especially at my games. "You need to micro".
Too bad Game didn't say that he was being dropped from the game as obs, and there was so much lag that mutas didn't even attack. Next time please add "I lag as obs, units barely responding and this is not LAN". Micro that lag...

Hmm, the latest upload seems to have failed. Maybe the browser crashed again or something. I'm still at work now, so I'll have to fix it when I get home in a couple of hours.

There's some sync issues with Elegant's VODs and he's out of town until tomorrow I think, so I will be re-casting the Kolll vs Mamon match tonight. There's a Ro16 match that will be played early and is scheduled to start in about 15 minutes. Once that's done, I'll do Kolll vs Mamon. Sorry for the delay.
|
which one?
Edit: its Hejek vs Various if anyone else was wondering
|

Kolll vs Mamon is now up on the youtube channel. Hejek vs Gotunk game 2 is also up now (the previously labeled game 2 was actually game 3). Sorry for the delay.
The Ro16 match wasn't played so don't freak out about VODs for that please.
There is a VOD for the showmatches that were played last night though since they turned out to be amazing games. It's currently being uploaded to www.iccupbw.blip.tv since I can't be bothered to split it properly for youtube. Upload should finish in a couple of hours. It will be titled "31/03 showmatches".
|
All VODs are now up on the AoV iCCup Starleague's YouTube Channel. What was missing was Jumper vs PatrOn and Ace vs Alfiomerda, which were casted by EleGant[AoV].
