Yeah, i had this problem and i didnt know windows 7 was to blame for it so i tried reinstalling broodwar, and then forgot the disk i was using was the broodwar one not the starcraft one so i now have to find the original disk... Stupid windows 7,

So yeah i have to play broodwar on my laptop or not play it at all now. :@

Is anyone actually playing in windows mode? The game becomes completely unresponsive, feels like your mouse is moving through syrup... I'm not sure if it's just my shitty computer doing this.

I really don't want to dualboot just for playing BW. It takes so much time just to play a game :/

yeah the game or mouse speed under window mode seems weirder... it's like a mix of being a little slower and choppier...

but on my desktop I have a pretty big monitor so I'm playing under 2x mode and it actually plays pretty well

Am I the only one who absolutely loves Windows 7, has not had any problems with it that could not be fixed automatically by Windows? The only thing I had troubles with was DOSBOX and I got that working eventually.

I've also had no trouble playing SC:BW on Windows 7, on two different laptops and a desktop. Granted I've used a downloaded launcher after installing BW from the disk on my Vista computer.

yeah people's mileage seem to vary. I would say however that the majority of Win7 users have had it freeze at least once. I'm not sure whether to say you guys are simply lucky and you guys have it coming or say that it's computer dependent. But I really doubt it's computer dependent since no one has found any correlation between computers that have had it freeze versus those that have not.

In any case, do you guys mind posting your computer specs?

Here are mine
Laptop (it will freeze): Windows 7 64-bit. Intel Core 2 Duo T7250. Nvidia Geforce 8600GT M. 2 GB Corsair DDR2 RAM

I've used the downloaded version of SC and the CD version and there's no difference

I keep refreshing the thread even though I know there's no chance of getting the problems solved... I got gaming abstinence and I refuse to play anything else

My specs are P4 D3.2 Geforce 7800 GTX 2GB RAM

Something that could be interesting is that about half of my installed programs are used with both cores, while some other just use one. Programs that should be run in x64 that is. I don't know why it's like this.

Windows 7 64bit, i5 720 processor, HD5870, 8gb corsair DDR3.

First it 'crashes' and I get the application has stopped working messagebox, however; if you just ignore the message and X it down you can just tab up and keep on playing. After this, everytime the samething happens the screen just freezes for 2-4 seconds and no message appears and it doesn't tab down.

The crash thing just happen once per session of BW. I'm also killing the explorer process.

I spent awhile looking for a fix after beta went down... the fix I found to a "crashing" bug where your entire system just freezes and you cant CTRL+ALT+DELETE, but can still hear music in the background is the following:

1. Go to your task manager
2. Go to processes tab, and allow changes (click on the Show process from all users)
3. Go to "Set Affinity" for the Starcraft process, and DO NOT allow it to use all cpu's, just choose 1 core.

To those who have this problem, let me know if this fix works... after it I played for 8-10 hours straight for a few days before quitting SC.

Hello TL, First post here, long time lurker.

First of, 16 bit applications does NOT work in 64 bit Windows, and there is no fix for it. I didn't get StarCraft working in Windows 7 64 bit either. The colors is a simple thing to fix.

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
StarCraft.exe
start explorer.exe

EDIT: Forgot to add, copy this into notepad, save it in your StarCraft folder as a .bat file... For example starcraft.bat and run it. The colors should be fine now.

I still have exctremely low expectations in having this fixed, but I something just occured to me.

This freeze never happens when I watch replays, only when I play. And I usually watch replays online with the iCCup launcher, though not with anyone else (RONREY)

My solution was to use my old computer with XP. Only have to switch the monitor cable whenever I play SC and wait some time for the start-up. Felt like the easiest solution to me at least :p

If you are running a 64 bit Windoze 7, you can try Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit. Personally I never got it to work, but I did get other games which didn't run in Windoze 7 like Dungeon Keeper with it.

Ironic that a Windoze application works better under WINE at a linux based OS than on Windoze itself. Kernel changes is not always good, you know.

I'm so glad I found this forum before I upgraded. I have windows 7 sitting on my vista desktop waiting to be installed but I've been rather hesitant about it. I'm sure the problem will fix itself eventually but I would rather play BW on vista than not have it on 7. I don't know why everyone complains about vista but I know it uses a lot more space and memory to boot up/run so I guess windows 7 "unclutters" the coding and uses less memory for start up. I don't know too much about it but I'm guessing I'm not far off.

The Windoze 7 codes are just as cluttered, they just cut out the most cluttered parts.

EDIT: That was written in a horrible way. What I meant is the cluttered codes are still there, but not in use, which means there is unnecessary much space being used up.
