1. Go to your task manager 2. Go to processes tab, and allow changes (click on the Show process from all users) 3. Go to "Set Affinity" for the Starcraft process, and DO NOT allow it to use all cpu's, just choose 1 core.
To those who have this problem, let me know if this fix works... after it I played for 8-10 hours straight for a few days before quitting SC. People please read my earlier post.... problem persists after these affinity, explorer kill, driver removal, closing everything, etc. This is a real Direct draw compatibility bug with windows 7 which happens randomly... I've already tried a lot of things... sometimes I've thought 'oh wow 6 hours no crashing this must be the solution.... boom, crashes 2 hours later and same inconsistency on crash times continue
Again, the issue has no solution yet other than either playing wmode or XP dual boot/virtualization. Can some mod please keep this thread from people posting solutions proven that they don't work on an earlier post? God this is giving me a headache

I can confirm with what never_toss is saying. I've tried pretty much every solution provided in this thread and I've deduced that there's no fix to this besides wmode, which sucks for playing BW since it's so hard to scroll your screen to somewhere else with your mouse. 2X Wmode is nearly unplayable since you can't scroll at all and everything slows down. There goes my streaming days for BW......

it works for me and im running windows 7 32bits although the colors mess up in the menu but all good in the game.

For people that are crashing in Win7 x64, have you activated your Win7 copy yet? I have an activated system with a genuine key and it never crashes, but my unactivated system always crashes. I think the crashing may be caused by the "Activate Win7 Now" message that pops up...
|
I have activated my system so there goes that theory.
|
I've been investigating this, and I think Spotify and Flash (ie, Firefox or IE with a Flash window open) causes the crash.
|
its not the activation. read never_toss's post. its the direct draw. no fix so far. if its for LAN usage, just download ICCUPs Chaos Launcher so you can play it in window mode. it works, but it sucks having a small screen and when you maximize it sometimes it goes over the screen -_-''
|
Anyone know if I can have the ICCup launcher start with "affinity 1" straight away? Making a batfile to start Starcraft.exe with affinity 1 doens't seem to work well with the antihack launcher, and I'm getting tired of forgetting to tab out and change it through taskmgr
|
Affinity is pointless. Now, all I do is: turn off everything -- then no more crashes so far. No Chrome, no skype, no bamboo doc, no outlook, -- I was having crashes all the time, and now, it's fine. Hope this helps. I'm using ICCUP launcher but not using any tricks, I'm leaving explorer running, not using affinity, etc...
|
Affinity is the only thing that works for me. It's probably because I use win7 on an old dual processor (D3.2).
|
i dont think you need to set the affinity of the chaos launcher to 1. just use the window mode option and problem solved, no color mess-ups, no lock-ups, just BW in a very small window.

Hmm, good thing I only play BW on windowed mode.
Don't hurt me.

I dont know if anyone already posted this as a solution, but im to lazy to read through 12 pages of it, so heres what you do.
1. right click broodwar and select properties from the list.
2. click compatibility.
3. check box that says run this program in compatibility mode, and then slect windows xp (service pack 2) from the drop down bar
4. next check the following boxes run in 256 colors disable visual themes disable desktop composition run this program as an administrator.
5. make sure only the boxes metiuon above are check if not it could mess it up
This will allow you to play the game as long as you want, the catch is that the menu has messed up color, the color is just some bad pixels its not anything drastic, but games have fine color. This is how i run Broodwar

did you set the window mode to 2x?? i think that mode has problems since it slows down the game. but i dont usually get freezes unless some background program starts popping out and interferes with my game and thats just killing the explorer.exe application

This problem is because of Winamp. Everytime when Winamp is open in background, music doesn't have to play, it crashes.. and when Winamp is closed, there is no problem whatsoever.. I've played 30-40 successful games at different times and I've come to that conclusion.

This has nothing to do with Winamp. I used to reboot Windows and kill all non-essential processes and still the freeze would happen. That is until I switched back to XP! ^^

well.. my problem is because of winamp.. whenever winamp is open, system crashes and I had to restart.. but in other cases I had no problem.. not once or twice I'm talking about more than 50 try.. that can't be coincedence. anyway.. I hope you guys can solve it as well.. cuz Windows 7 rulez.

I made a thread about this before when I had the same problem. I have windows 7 64bit and my sc started crashing after an adobe software update.
I tried different solution before getting rid of adobe because I thought: "It can't be adobe." So I removed adobe.. and sc didn't crash anymore.
But you can't do shit without adobe so I installed it again... and sc crashed.
So I just did a restore before the adobe update and now... I just don't update adobe anymore LOL and I can still view Flash.
I don't know if this would be a legitimate help or not... but it just worked for me
