Hey, I had a question for you guys. I've been playing iccup recently, and have been keeping a solid D but not advancing over it. Basicly I'm pretty noob at the game. I play every day and have a real desire to get better, but something that constantly plagues me is how I feel after losing. At most I can play three games in a row, and if 2 are loses I get too angry to play anymore, and I'm sure I could be doing much better if I could overcome this. I was wondering if any of you had any tips or tricks for overcoming the dissapointment/anger after a loss. Thanks!

aside from stop losing, the best advice i can give is to find some friends at your skill level and play them constantly. it doesn't hurt as much when you lose to a friend that you can beat consistently compared to losing to some guy that proxy gated you on destination.

Think about it this way. A loss will teach you more about Starcraft than a win.

Get over your stats. After that it becomes pretty easy to just keep playing.

It's something that affects all players, though in different degrees.

The feeling after losing is hard to describe, and the exact nature is probably different for every player. For me, the bad feeling is the belief that I "could have" won the game, that the opponent won because "he got lucky" or had a "dumb strategy" that a D+ noob could have pulled off but won because "I wasn't looking for two seconds".

I don't think I've gotten over it yet completely, but I've been more at ease as of late.

One thing that helps is to pinpoint exactly why you lost. If this is a difficult step, then you're still not accepting the loss. The most recent game I lost, I was upset because I was ahead most game, but I saw the replay and objectively saw that there were a number of improvements I can definitely make. Try to be objective and point out one thing you can improve for next time instead of brooding over whether you deserved the win. It will make your mind at ease and also improve your game.

Scout better. Most excuses that "he got lucky" can be solved by scouting better. Instead of crying about getting 3hat ling rushed, send out an extra probe. Keep your first probe alive longer. Send out two extra probes. Make up for your weaknesses instead of crying about opponents that take advantage of them.

Finally, ask yourself, if you're really "better than that", why did you lose? Was it luck? In rare circumstances, it is due to luck, such as a 5 pool against your 14cc. However, even in those cases, there is a solution -- don't 14cc. You lost for a legitimate reason, and it means you have areas to improve.

Accept your weaknesses and find solutions to them. Savior has short fingers so he only uses hotkeys 1, 2, 3, and maybe 4. Did that stop him? I don't think he cried imba about his short fingers. He has low APM but I imagine he has some of the best mouse-rectangle-draw-click micro in the world to manage his army.

It's not about my stats, I can accept if I dip into D- one day because I know Il be back up at D by the next, its just that I find it so frustrating to lose. I know everyone does, but I was really hoping you guys could help me out with tips to get over the frustration.

Edit: The above post was exactly the type of information I was looking for, thanks.

i don't think that it is so much the stats that angers people as it is the cheese. standard games are always pleasant, win or lose, but losing to some smartass who 4pooled and talked shit after winning makes me want to call it quits.

standard games i can understand being frustrated by because you couldn't stop his 3rd/4th gas etc, but that is more motivation to play and improve.

Actually sometimes its best to stop playing and reflect after 3 losses in a row. I hate losing, but I'm a pretty emotional player, meaning if I lose, my play gets worse, like a lot worse. Now, if I lose 3 in a row, I'm crashing and burning. Like i'm not even thinking anymore, I'm just playing and desperately trying to win without any real plan or desire to do so.

Meaning, I usually wind up playing another 10 games in rage completly neglecting the thoughts of why I'm losing in the first place. Which in the end means I lose another 10 games

So yeah, if you lose two or three games in a row. Just pause, get a drink, browse TL.net, then dig up the replays. Go through them, try to find out what you're doing wrong. Which can work as a motivational thing, like "Okay I screwed this and that up, but next game I'll think about it and it'll improve my play and my chances to win".

Other than that I don't really know any other advice. Accepting losses can be a bitch ;O

I think a poker analogy is appropriate.

How a person handles his bad beats is quite revealing about his character.

Rekrul said that tilting is caused by insecurities. He says dumb things a lot but I give him credit because it's true. Any time you feel the need to "prove" yourself, you're being insecure and wanting attention.

If someone cracks your Aces with 2-7 offsuit and laughs about it, how do you react? Do you get pissed off and leave the table? If you think about it, you should be happy. You should be ECSTATIC. Here is a player who's obviously a VERY bad player, and he just revealed a MAJOR weakness. You should BEG for him to stay at your table and play more hands with him because you will win 90% of your games!

Recently, I lost two games in a row to someone on Destination, ZvT. He did the typical 8-rax 1fac 1star total gayness strat that terrans love to do. Initially, I thought, 'Wtf terrans have it so ez', but then I had to say, he pulled it off pretty well. After all, he beat me. He was pretty clever about it I have to admit. But as I recalled the game, I remembered that he had poor macro and there were a few other weaknesses I could exploit. I played him three more times, and I won all three. Kind of like Jaedong vs. Fantasy 2-3 comeback. Once I learned how to deal with his mech builds I stopped losing. If I hadn't cooled down after those two losses and looked for ways to deal with it, I wouldn't have been able to win.

i think a big thing for a lot of players that follow progaming actively is that they watch all of these really good players, and then feel as though they've learned a lot and have a good understanding of the game, however they lack the experience needed to play as well as they think they can

so they've built up this idea of how they're going to play in their head, but then in the actual game they don't play as well

Playing after losing a number of games in a row can result in this.

Just stop and play the next day after you lose a few games, because I find you get more concentrated on winning than just playing the game, and you end up making stupid mistakes or just playing poorly.

It's like what Chill said, stop caring about your stats.

Now to facilitate this, play on a smurf. It's understandable that people don't want to be judged based on what rank their account is, so play on a smurf no one knows so that you don't care what your record is.

Oh, I also realized that you're a new poster.

In a thread here, it's EXTREMELY rare for EVERY post to be useful to you. Don't take the many unhelpful and half-assed one-liner posts as indicative of this website as a whole. If you sift through the crap you'll definitely find some gems.

lol. Here's the solution. This worked for a lot of my friends, and for me: Dont play online. yes. Dont play online. Play against computers. That might be way too easy, so why?? Get a solid build order down, improve game sense, Learn what works, what doesnt, etc. After training like this for about a month or so get back online. And it will be different.

I don't think too many people are getting that this is not a "stats" issue, it is a sports psychology issue with handling defeat.

Just try to focus on the positive.

I would say more than that, but really that is all there is to it.

If there was no positive in the loss, then just shrug it off and play another game or a different game.

lol, I know exactly what you mean. I'm a D+/C- T, and yesterday I played against a protoss offracing as zerg. Our game lasted for 34 minutes, and he used nothing but zerglings for the first 30 minutes. He won. It was absolutely fucking humiliating.

But I think if you stop, take a 5 minute break, and just logically think it through, that the loss you just took wont matter in the long run, and that you can only get better from the experience if you choose to do so, it really helps to calmly move on and keep playing in a good temper.
