Hey so I am tentatively planning a trip up to Berkeley to visit my two best friends around mid November (before Thanksgiving), assuming I have no major exams around that period, and my friends have no major exams... I was wondering if there will be any LAN's around the Berkeley area mid-November, in fact I'd help to organize one - assuming someone can go location scouting and find a suitable place to hold the LAN at.
Anyways, I just figured that there were a few Berkeley LAN's last year, and I didn't get a chance to go, but this year I really want to make a trip up because my friends are up there, and thought to myself "hey might as well see if I can play a LAN while I'm up there."
So if anyone is interested, or knows if someone is hosting a LAN, let me know.
Thats my first thought when i go places!! Where are the LANS!!!!!!
We had LAN Before Time last year, iirc it was December or so. I went, Yosh was there and lots of TLnetters. Iunno, we've been talking about it for a while but no one has really organized it. I asked Zalfor and evanthebouncey who both went last time, we also had nitrogen23... if anyone couild organize one it would be great and I'd go to it again if it's on weekend (like it should be... or friday too)
btw there's lots and lots of TL.netters in the bay area :p
I could organize it if someone could find a LAN center.
last year we just used a class building - SSBM LAN was downstairs below us and we were upstairs... dunno if the other people will organize it again because turnout aws lower than the 2 years ago LAN. it was organized by like, the asian association or something btw XD. Yeah, I hope we could pull it off it would be awesome! I think you could just use the class building again but I'm not sure on specifics on stuff like that
let's see if any LAN centers in berkeley...
ya there's thursday night starcraft nights somewhere in berkeley too, every thrusday.

Omg Im down, (now living in SF)
yea..... asian american association does hold a video game tournament semester-ly. And my guess is that it'll happen either the friday before thanksgiving or the friday after.
If you're looking to organize a LAN party, I guess I could ask around. A lot of the places around berkeley are aimed more towards people who just need to get on a PC/go on the internet really quick, as many places charge by every 10 minutes or so. BUUTTTT, I have seen one place in Korea-town right in between berkeley and oakland that seems like a semi-legit gaming pc-cafe. Maybe if I end up going down there to eat or karaoke, I'll check their rates and ask about it for you.
that place is only semi-legit and hard to get to.
whatever happened to thursdayt night batltes?
dunno... apparently my brother just went to a starcraft LAN in berkeley just last saturday and they are pretty often. not sure about those. If a Berkeley LAN was held in Dwinelle again that would be really cool too, although last time my keyboard/mouse/laptop config was pretty complicated and sucky. How did AAA organize it in Dwinelle, did they ask and get to use it for free or what??

will jump lurkers for crack
let's do this... not during finals/midterms, and i'll be down.
Ah nice, I can meet Last Romantic Hopefully Yosh will show up too (he still resides in Berkeley even though he graduated, right?)
hrmm.... i was at a starcraft lan last friday (10-ish people). apparently they have one every friday night in bowles hall's library. The skill level is....... well, at least the environment is very friendly =P.
That place I'm talking about isn't tooo hard to get to, there's a bus that goes directly there, and I'm sure some people have cars too. I'm saying that it's a possibility if people from outside of Cal end up wanting to do something more organized, without having to bring their own laptop or setup or complete setup or whatever.
And Yosh lives in the south bay, and he's a busy guy :S, so iono if he'd be able to make it.
Oh yeah, it was on Friday, sorry I got my days mixed up. Yeah, you probably saw my brother and he brought 2 of his friends. Ya, those tournaments are probably D- to D+ level I'd say about. Last time when we had the Starcraft LAN Before Time last november or something the average skill level was probably like D+/C-. It was just me and Yosh above that average I think, unfortunately he was on my side of the bracket and knocked me out in the semi-finals, otherwise I would have had the privilege of playing him in a bo5 in finals!
I could potentially host one in the bay area.
I have access to a variety of locations, machines, etc, and I am a somewhat older player (25 for two more months)
It all depends on my schedule.
I've been producing DV cinema lately, I could even possibly shoot a documentary on it.
That would be interesting, wouldn't it?
THE LANMAN COMMETH
sometime november, I'll know more for sure on my schedule in the coming weeks ... I've been doing a lot of shit recently , planning to go before Thanksgiving.
just let me know ahead of time and i'll work extra hard earlier in the week to be there <3
oh my...... that's a pleasant surprise =]
This time we will have to get as many people as we can. Last time we got like about 25 people or so but I'm really sure we can much more than that, especially with the TL Find a Starcraft Buddy in Your Area Thread

Something like that. Or caltrain to bart. It's really not that far (and you would think someone else from tl.net would be somewhere near san jose (I know 2 that are kinda close that can drive).

Last time I went to Berkeley I played in a big table tennis tournament. Then I went to chill with Edison but we didn't play any SC cause I guess FroZ is gone from Berkeley.
I took the Amtrak from downtown SJ. I think you can take Caltrain too.
hm I can take caltrain and my sister knows Berkeley since she's like an alumni or something. I might be able to go o_O
I'm 15 btw lol

Don't worry lmao, I'm 15 too. The time I went I was scared people were going to be drinking or doing drugs or w/e lol, but it was totally unwarranted. The atmosphere was very fun and friendly. To be honest I was very apprehensive and nervous when I went, but it was just loads of fun and you really should try to make it The only thing I would have wished was more TL.netters, and this time it seems it will be very much possible. By the way, can you speak in Mandarin?

No it is about $40 probably, prices in California are like $3.60

On October 09 2008 14:25 Superiorwolf wrote: Ah ah ah, I just had such a cool idea, I should do commentaries on the games :D hmm but then the players could hear... how could this work! <3 :D
OMG. we've totally done that before (the first lan before time)! lol. the answer is.... a longass ethernet cord to adjacent rooms, and have the players turn up their sound really high you could also go wireless, but that's risky because the obser could end up disconnecting, and then like 50 people watching and listening would be sooo saddddd
and uh yea, this would be a lot of non-berkeley people, lol. i donno if Asian american association would be cool with like 80% of their tourney all non-cal students... especially cos they don't charge an entrance fee and give out like ~80$ worth of prizes.
Well it's not like it'd be hard to get people to bring some money.
On October 09 2008 12:16 Superiorwolf wrote: No it is about $40 probably, prices in California are like $3.60
you are asian you should be better at math ;p (jk) . but seriously if you drive a car that has approximately normal highway MPG (let's say about 22)... and the place is only an hour away we can assume it is about 50-60 miles. So it'll take less than 3 gallons which is round trip cost of less than $20.
I dunno where the extra $20 is coming from aside from maybe an entrance fee or buying food. ;p
On October 10 2008 05:53 FragKrag wrote: Well it's not like it'd be hard to get people to bring some money.
The issue is that...... according to UC Berkeley's campus club rules, if a club charges money for any thing, including an entrance fee, or EVEN including selling drinks or food, they can't give out prizes. Don't ask me why they do this, because I think it's retarded too.
I kind of want to go to a LAN for once in my life. The only problem is that I'm a really terrible, godawful player. My best iccup rank is D. It'll still probably be fun though. Is this being tentatively planned for a weekend?

Don't worry, LANs are fun regardless of rank and last LAN Before Time the average rank was D/D+ so no worries there 'Cept for a few people that is... you'll meet so many people :D Also, where do you live CDRDude?
Lol Xeris I dunno but frankly regardless of whether it's $40 or whether it's $20 money should not be an issue in going to a LAN that's so close o.o XCetron, you better come!
About an entrance fee... I don't know, prizes are cool but that is one stupid rule. I for one would pay a few bucks to put into a pool but I don't think others would be as willing (especially seeing as the majority of people will be like D/D+ anyways). Otherwise I would be just as fine if there was a small fee to cover the cost of LAN organization and stuff.
Anyone have the info from AAA on how they were able to use Dwinelle? Was it rented or what? Do Berkeley clubs have free use of campus buildings??
lets just play and have fun. =)
Well, I'm sure that the money can be a donation that is optional but encouraged.
It's almost November... any updates? Xeris, are you still coming to Berkeley over Thanksgiving break? Otherwise we'll have to look to others to organize a LAN.
I'm going to talk to my friends next week and decide firmly upon a date. it won't be DURING thanksgiving, it will either be right before or right after.
(its looking kinda like right after at this point just because school is a bit busier than I expected)
AHHHH Im so down! (San Mateo resident near SF) When and where please!? I vote for before thanksgiving... I dont want to wait that long... Possibly a 2 day lan?

before thanksgiving for sure, when exactly do most schools let out for thanksgiving break?
I would say Nov 22-23 is a perfect weekend.

I'm pretty sure that the turnout you'll get won't change that much because of a football game.
Overlapping an event with the Big Game is just a bad idea IMO. Better to have it on the Friday or Sunday if you choose to do it that weekend.
I believe clubs and campus organizations have the ability to reserve rooms on campus, so if you can get some club to sponsor the event, then they can get a room for you. However, the good rooms are probably gonna get reserved quick, so you might want to act fast.

The turnout you get will change [ - LR]
and it's going to be impossible to get anywhere due to the hundred-thousand odd people that will be cramming into the city for the game.

22-23 fuckkkkkkk Ill be out of town T_T
I really really really would rather it be on Friday, second to Saturday... I can check my schedule but I think I can make all Fridays and most Saturdays, I'm more tentative on the Sunday time.
Scratch that lol - I cannot make a Saturday the 15th... Fridays will work even though I'll have to skip practice but w/e... all my Sundays are clear!
@ the guy asking whether we need our own computers - last year we just had the LAN at a random room in the Dwinelle building and had to bring our own computers. It depends on whether this year we can find some LAN center to play at. Hopefully everyone is still reading this thread. I can PM the compiled list I have if need be (yosh and the rest of TL.netters are a must have ;D)
This year I'll be sure to bring a camera and/or video ;D
Ehhh, I can't come on 22-23 T_______T;;
Xeris where are you coming from? The weekend of 29th could also be acceptable. Although my brother wouldn't be able to make 22-23, I could still come. Or would you be able to do Friday the 21st? I think that works better for quite a few people although I have to cancel practice I would definitely take LAN much priority over practice haha
Speaking of LANs, does anyone know if a LAN with ~10 computers/laptops will make a big difference in the electricity bill? ~20?
:o
i could come any time... but i don't really play sc anymore and i don't have a laptop... i'll just take pictures or something
Xeris, do you think you could add some of the probable LAN dates to the OP?
It's looking like:
Friday the 14th Sunday the 16th
Friday the 21st Sunday the 23rd
Friday the 28th Saturday the 29th Sunday the 30th
I vote for the 14th and 15th... but can we find space in time to do the lan?
p.s. SuperiorWolf: thx, ill be prepared to bring my computer....

We're a good football school.

That's pretty much the ONLY weekend I can do it. This weekend I'm celebrating my birthday here, the weekend after I'm free, weekend after that I'm studying for Finals / finishing the 1st chapter of my thesis.
And then its winter break, and all my friends at Berkeley (the main reason I'm going there) are coming back down to LA, so no reason to go up there...
And THEN, I have my own LAN in SoCal in January O_O;
So literally 22-23rd is the only weekend I can make it to Berkeley for a LAN, unless you guys want to do it in February, or just organize it yourselves !

I work at the Internet Cafe on Telegraph and 43rd Street.
There's 28 computers, all installed with Starcraft.
The prices are as follows: 1 hour - 5$ 3 hours - 10$ 9.5 hours - 20$
You're more than welcome to host the LAN there.
i think we should just hold it in dwinelle like previous LANs
except we'll need all that equipment ~__~;;

honestly I'd rather spend a couple bucks to go to a lan cafe rather than go somewhere else and have to lug around my computer, monitor, cords, and possible a chair? I vote on a lan like mayorITC, ... Mayor whats up with a group buy? were bringing more ppl ~_~

Well, nothing is stopping people from driving to SoCal for 6 hours and having the LAN there instead. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure Internet Cafes are about 70 cents per hour in Korea, so you might as well as fly over there instead.
PS. Everything is more expensive in the Bay Area. The only other nearby Internet cafe that I know of is in SF and has the exact same prices.
yes, we're all going to fly to korea because the $1k+ air fare isn't stopping us
Yeah, Berkeley is even considered fairly cheap for Bay Area, those are probably the best rates that you'll get. I think the 21st is the best day - although I can also make 22nd and 23rd so I'm fine for all.
I'd also rather have it at an actual LAN Cafe than Dwinelle - my setup at Dwinelle was horrible. However, it did have a more relaxed feel at Dwinelle, so that could be a benefit at having it there - also it's free if you can get a club to do it?
LR I think if we have it on Friday you can just leave the rally early and sacrifice a bit for a LAN? please?? Looks like Friday and Sunday is a more convenient time for people because people [LR] want to see the Saturday game.
@MayorITC, could you link to some more info or a website of that internet cafe?
the rally is boring anyway
it's just ... fire
~_~ as much as I would love to do it at a LAN, If the guy doesn't want our business so bad he wont give us a deal I say we host it somewhere else... I've never been to your guys lans or anything, but I would think a business owner would want to bring a profit into his establishment in any size shape or form rather than be an ass and tell it to go away... just my opinion... I asked my local lan in San Mateo (NcK Cyber Lounge) he says when people host events there and bring 10+ people in he gives 35% off of the hours they buy in quantity of over 5 hours or sumthing...\ EDIT: but San Mateo is a little ways away from Berkeley ...
Set a date and get this shit rolling!
Where is Dwinelle anyways? For us nonfamiliar-with-Berkeley folks.
Ya no matter what im going regardless. Do whatever is less hassle Xeris,
Set date, I'll come. I can spend up to w/e everyoneelse is spending, internetcafe? Np.

I dunno how we gonna get Dwenell though...

Have it Sunday prz
I might be doing the dancing o.o but I'm not ditching rally. It's one of my only opportunities to vent frustation.

??? Content not found.
and LR, cmon it's a LAN!!! Just skip a bit of the rally and come to the LAN, it doesn't happen as often and you can vent your frustration by owning people in Starcraft! T_T
So is this actually happening?
I"m probably going to book my train or whatever to Berkeley next week. I'm planning on being there friday night, saturday, and leaving sunday night to get back to SD.
if anyone can find other locations or something and give me contact with their managers so I can get us a good rate that'd be cool, or if anyone can suggest other locations.
if we can't find a good LAN center we can just have it at some location?
anyways someone from Berkeley who wants to commit to doing some scouting for me please PM me.
I'm going to be going up there LAN or no LAN so =P
ugh doing in berkeley seems like kinda a hassle? Lets just do it at that expensive lan... lets get something set in stone
Soo00o0o0oo We got a date for this LAN yet?
how many times have I asked for someone over there to PM me so we can find a location >.>
nobody has PM'd me.
LoL SuperiorWolf... ILL BE THERE! Well Xeris... Maybe no1 lives in Berkeley... Theres not much over there lol... Have you checked Google? What cities are close to Berkeley maybe they have lans close by???
Ok so check this out I did some Research...
THERE ARE NO LANS IN BERKELEY...
I checked with one place in San Francisco the guy said He'll give us 8 hours for $20 Which is not a horrible deal ( this is the place on Telegraph)
Another place in oakland is going to call me back tonight because the manager wasn't in...
Called my local LAN in San Mateo They said theres a couple things they can do... first is 6$ for 2 hours *eww i know* OR $15 all day pass no puchasing of any hours from open to close.... 2pm to Midnight... this is in San Mateo though, Nobody else was thowing anything out there so I did it myself
So Unless somone wants to host this thing at their house or find some unknown venue thats not on the internet, This is all we got, Whats do u guys think?
??? Didn't this guy say there was a LAN in Berkeley?
On November 07 2008 17:46 MayorITC wrote: I work at the Internet Cafe on Telegraph and 43rd Street.
There's 28 computers, all installed with Starcraft.
The prices are as follows: 1 hour - 5$ 3 hours - 10$ 9.5 hours - 20$
You're more than welcome to host the LAN there.
Anyways, if all else fails just find someone who can reserve a room at Dwinelle for us, it worked fine last time.
Telegraph is in San Francisco EDIT: Unless I'm Terribly Mistaken... If this was true why didn't he leave any contact information, plus when i googled it no lans showed up in berkeley...
wow this is really depressing I cant come, leaving for LA on the 21st T_T
T_T There will be more lans I'm sure.... If we get a good turnout on this one depending if we can all decide on a venue I'll host one later
I just looked on Google Maps and saw it was in Oakland, right next to Berkeley. I also Googled and apparently it's also in Berkeley (might just be because it's right next to Berkeley). But it's in the general area afaik.
Hmm, Thats possibly the place that said will call me back tonight then... I'll let u know what they say when they call me back, if its even a semi decent deal I say we just do it there then, Seems like Berkeley is the HUB of Tl.net. How many people are goin? I may have to reserve spots EDIT: I'll see if I can get us some sort of group deal for bringing X amount of people
20+ people will almost definitely be there. Most likely we'll have about 30. If we're lucky we'll have maybe even 40+. You can check my list on the bottom of the first page. These are all just estimations/guesses though...
I've never seen an Internet cafe in Berkeley, and i don't think there are any.
The one mentioned on telegraph would be a few miles down in Oakland, so too far to walk if that makes a difference for anyone.
anyone speak korean in here???? The lady from oakland called me back but her english is poor I think she said $20 for 10 hours BUT the SF lan and Oakland land are owned by same people and they want us to go to the SF lan... I keep trying to tell her no we want to go to oakland... They have 24 computers in oakland LAN SuperiorWolf U speak korean?
Ok heres the update about the lan in Oakland The guy at first told me we can only use 14 computers to allow his daily customers access... I told him with the amount of people were bringing this is not acceptable so basically he kind of wants a downpayment to reserve the space I think, His English is so bad T_T(if anyone knows korean now is the time to jump in and help me out) So What I need is a date, DO you guys want Friday the 21st, Saturday the 22nd, or Sunday the 23rd... He will not let us take 2/3 days... It seems he doesn't want to make more money for his business lol. But he is going to call me back later tonight with a translator So I'm putting a poll for what day everyone wants best this is $20 for 10 hours he is open from 11am to 2am
Poll: What day do you want the norcal lan in Oakland? (Vote): Friday the 21st (Vote): Saturday the 22nd (Vote): Sunday the 23rd

Telegraph is hm... the main street in south Berkeley? Most of our food places are on it [Fat slice, Blondies, Crepes a gogo, Smart Alec's, Chipotle, Subway, w/e]
Not sure if there's a telegraph in SF. There most likely is. Dono which they're referring to then
This place is in oakland but supposed to be very close to Berkeley, This is the closest and only lan in/near Berkeley, unless someone else can find a venue vote for day :D
I won't vote - I can do all three days. I'd prefer a Friday because my bro could go... but then LR doesn't want that so Saturday works too. Sunday also works although I'd not like it to be too late because I'd have school the next day.
OK more news on the oakland/Berkeley LAN They called me back and said if we go... no matter if we bring 1-40 people he can only allow us to use 14 computers... He says he has people that come every day and he will not let us Rent his whole place out for our event... He said we can use the San Francisco place and if we do that He'll let us use 20 computer... So do you guys want to use the SF place...The San Mateo place or keep looking for another venue?
i know that place.
its too far for most of the kids here unless u guys want to drive there.
most likely we should just do it in dwinelle.
Ok, I'm all up for doing it in Dwinelle but we have to figure out how to reserve a room =o
O well, I tried my best :D Wats Dwinelle?
what the fuck @ those expensive ass prizes oO:
LR you go to berkeley? :D
Yes, LR goes to Berkeley. I think he's a freshman, dunno though. Dwinelle is a campus building - apparently clubs can reserve rooms in it for free. Last year we had a LAN in Dwinelle.
Xeris may be a little bit of $ but its so much easier than bringing 20+ computers and setting them up to a lan ....
It actually wasn't that inconvenient, GearitUP. Last year we did this, with 4 routers and everyone brought their own laptop. Although I'd love to be at a real LAN, this works just as well. But about the $$$ for the LAN, I don't quite understand. It's $20 per person?
United States17042 Posts
LR is at berkeley, as a freshman. Dwinelle is probably the easiest if you can get enough computers/everyone is okay playing on a laptop.
It isn't that inconvenient AT ALL. In 2005 we had a LAN in SoCal where we rented a house in Orange County and had a LAN with almost 20 people and the only problem we had was at the start the electrical grid in the house crashed because of the amount of comps, but if we actually get a good place at Berkeley that shouldn't be a problem at all.
30495834098x cheaper than fucking $20 per person for 10 hours that is absolutely outrageous, lol. I don't care if SoCal places are cheaper than NorCal places, we got $9 for 11am-2am , that's less than half the price for 15 hours as opposed to 10 hours ;; that's ridiculous.
Alright, someone with connections set us up a room in Dwinelle!
Edit: Hmm... Xeris, how long do you propose this LAN to be? Last year we only had it for like... 5-6 hours? It was like 6 PM to 11 PM, or something like that. Here's the pics of how big the room was last year: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=69835 (near middle of page)
I think we'll need a bigger room this time
Ohhhh... laptops... hahahaha I was gona bring my Tower CPU, I dont have a laptop, maybe I can borrow my friends
I have lots of switches/hubs/routers + cables if we need extra. Kinda wishing i didn't sell my laptop last month though. =[
If worst comes to worst, people can always share computers if they have no other means of getting a laptop there.

depends on how many people we have ...
if we're efficient we can finish 16 people in about 6-7 hours.
I think there will be a lot more than 16 people

Ya but its just a bit of a pain in the ass to lug around the tower and my oldschool 500 lbs 22 inch monitor...

edit: btw, were you the same guy who was there last time with us? And wasn't there someone named Blackgloop? is that you? XD This is cool! Hmm... are we still going to have a second LAN when Xeris comes?
Cool! Xeris, if you can organize one the next week (if you still want to) I will be all up for it on Saturday, or Sunday morning. I am going to this one :D
LOOOOOOOOOOOOL
WHAT THE FUCK -_-;;
WHY THIS FRIDAY ASSHOLES... >.>
Ya thats totally awesome Im going to this one :D
airbeds? lol. this is hardcore.
Happy birthday Xeris -_-;; Man, I am posting from school right now just to vent some anger/frustration/sadness.
On Friday I have volleyball practice, then on Saturday I have to get up early to go to a tournament. Although missing the volleyball practice should be fine, I'm in a predicament here - First, I'll have to convince my parents to let me skip the volleyball practice. Next, if I can go to the LAN, I will have to leave around 10:40 - 11:20, whereas I was originally planning to stay upwards until 2-3 AM. However, I did leave the last LAN B4 Time at around 11:30, so it shouldn't be too bad if I can go.
This LAN B4 Time sounds like it will be loads more fun than last one because with, what, airbeds, food and snacks? Hahaha, it will be a very professional LAN! I really wish I could have gone without limitations, but hopefully I can still come for at least part of the LAN. If I do come, though, I'll make sure to bring a videocamera and camera! Last year we did not have the best of coverage.
Xeris, will you still be planning to host another one the next week? I will have nothing on that weekend (the best day will be Saturday for me, at least).
There are a lot of bw players in the Bay Area. We should at least try to organize these every few months.
Ya if u host next weekend as well I will go to both... Happy Bday :D

You should try to aim for every college holiday xD (semester breaks are probably easiest for everyone.
and happy birthday xeris.
I might actually go to one in Berkeley. I haven't been to a local lan since WCG when it was in San Mateo. We used to have 1 in SF every month or 2 like 4 years back. That shit was hell of fun.
T_T I really must convince my parents to let me go T_T T_T T_T ugh... I wish it was scheduled for the week after Oh well
How long will the singles tournament run till? If I can go I can probably stay until about 11 (which is about 30 minutes after when the tournament ended last time iirc) Otherwise I will just go to meet people and not participate in tournament (if I can go T_T)
Yo superior wolf tell your parents that this is a very special meeting of friends that may lend you tips on how to get into U.C. berkeley and I'm sure they'll let u go.
So does anyone have an address to this place? How am I supposed to know where to go...
Awesome thanks , See you guys there :D

Hm, I was there last time, but I don't know about this Blackgloop person. Anyways I'm really looking forward to it. See you all there!

Yo the lan was awesome.. I left a little early just got home.. :D The majority of the players were Zerg users with like 1/3 toss users and maybe 1/2 terran users. Finals came down to a ZvZ where Heathen won it 2-0 vs SuperiorWolf. Fun Lan to all who didn't go... YOU SHOULD HAVE!
