Yeah guys...just semantics, don't take it so seriously. I can't help if I enjoy starcraft or have other weird hobbies. The definition is not exclusive to EVERYONE so it doesn't make sense to argue about it.
|
I have nothing else to do right now but argue over semantics. And I'm definitely not taking it seriously, it's just something to do to pass the time. Nerd is one of those weird words though that is hard to define what it really means and why you label some people one and others not. I wonder how long the writers of these dictionaries argued about how to define the word. I think they pussied out on a rather ambiguous definition.

They arent stupid, irritating or blah blah.
They arent obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit. Its a job, not a hobby. They make hundreds of thousands of dollars off it.
And who says they are socially inept? I never said the first definition applied to them at all. They are most definitely single-minded and obsessed in what they do, spending hours and hours of practice a day playing starcraft. I never said they are socially inept. I said it was debatable, which means plenty of them are and plenty of them aren't but if all you do almost every single day is practice, eat, and sleep then you will probably be a bit socially inept, or at least more so than most people. Starcraft is most definitely a nonsocial activity. You are practicing and playing against others but this isn't using any social skills. Chatting with your teammates about strategy also doesn't help much with social skills. In fact if you want to be one of the best pros you better NOT have a girlfriend.
The argument that because Starcraft is a job and not just a hobby is somewhat arguable but the fact is almost none of them make much money from starcraft, let alone $100k+. Only the top players can make a good living off starcraft and the top players are probably some of the biggest "nerds" of them, i.e. they are more obsessed with the game and they spend less time on social activities like girlfriends and more time on practicing, which makes them the best.
But just because it is a payable job for some doesn't make them less of a nerd. Someone who writes computer programming 8 hours a day could probably be labeled a nerd too, even if he has a girlfriend or even a wife.
Like I said, being called a nerd isn't a bad thing, at least I don't think it is. People who socialize a lot and never get obsessed over certain things never do anything great. Nerds are who are remembered in the history books more often than not.
edit: If you want to say Starcraft is not a hobby that's fine, but it's definitely a pursuit, which is part of the definition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you obviously have no idea what koreans are like. more than 95% of the times, koreans don't talk about strategy when they are chatting in channels. i know this because i was in korean guilds ,and i can understand and write korean. their conversation is just a normal conversation about anything, really. in other words, u'll rarely see them talking about their game analysis and whatnot. the korean guild i was in would always hold a monthly meeting with each other, where everyone would go on a camp or something. they'd eat, talk, take pictures, and etc. when the picturse are uploaded on their websites, you can't find anything related to sc in those pictures. some of them talk about how they ended up going to same colleges, and they really hang out and chill. i think ur misconception of sc in korea is due to the fact that ur from different culture. for example, in usa, it's hard to find those "popular ppl" who drink and party playing sc for hours, but in korea, even the most bad ass who can kick anyone's ass in school plays sc obsessively. also i wouldn't call them nerds, because being a sc progamer is a new occupation in korea. how about those who practice other sports like soccer obsessively? bball's a game. sc's a game. they are all sports imo. yes progamers do work out. they spend hours and hours practicing, so they need to have good physical endurance and stuff.

(in reply to CapO)
Well I was specifically talking about pro Starcraft teams practicing together in their houses. But obviously I don't know exactly what goes on, only the little that I've seen and read.
And I think team sports like soccer and basketball are a lot more social than Starcraft, which is why you could label Starcraft pros nerds and not other pro athletes. Those sports you have to talk and work together as the game is actually going on but in a Starcraft game you have to concentrate fully in your own world, you can't waste time talking to other people as you play the game.
Obviously saying all Starcraft pros are nerds is a bit dumb and seems malicious but I was simply presenting one interpretation of the meaning of the word. I'm simply passing the time until the OSL matches tonight; can't wait for them, they should all be great.

1. Right click to the correct spot (don't think so because your men wouldn't stay in formation). 2. Right click beyond where you want to go, then press S. Don't think that's is because there is a pause when you hit S (Stop). 3. Right click beyond, then press P (patrol). Possible. 4. Right click beyond, then press A (attack). Possible, but I understand that P works better for air units (all air units??). -_-;;
Basic Guide to Microing Land Units: 1. Click away from the attacking unit. 2. Click attack, and hit anywhere. If the attacking unit is far out of range, then your unit will simply move to the place you attack-moved to.
Usually moving away and right-clicking on the attacking unit is not a good plan. If you misclick, your unit will move towards the attacker without doing anything. And your cursor has to move a longer distance. I just like to pull back, then hit attack-move to the same exact spot. I don't have to move my cursor and only have to press the "A" key.

Starcraft pros are definitely nerds by both definitions that you provided. They practice anywhere from 10-14 hours a day on a computer. They definitely don't have the social skills of a normal person who lives a normal life.
And they have the single-minded intent of playing Starcraft. Starcraft is a non-social game. Yes, progamers are nerds. What's wrong with calling them nerds? They can't get girls; they wouldn't be able to maintain a relationship without ruining their gaming career; they have little time to spend on how to have healthy social relationships.

can't get girls?
BoxeR/Reach/YellOw I'm sure have 100% success rate -_-; maybe a few others.
can't maintain relationships?
GORILLA OOV has a girlfriend; they've been together for awhile.

If you're being sarcastic WhatisProtoss, I said in my other posts that there is nothing wrong with being a nerd. I also never said they couldn't get girls, but I think it definitely might hurt their career if they let their girlfriends get in the way of their practicing. Unless they get cool girlfriends that let them practice all that time every day and don't bitch about it, in which case they probably have a pretty sweet life going.

If you have been stuck in front of a computer all day long and have been only around male gamers for most of your teenage life, then your social skills are obviously not up to par. It's like asking a middle-schooler to date a college girl and be on the same mental level.
Progamers have little experience with girls and relationships and it would be hard for them to jump into one and maintain it effortlessly.
Boxer, Reach, Yellow? They look nice, sure. They have lots of money. Yes, they can probably get any girl easily JUST because of those two things: (1) Looks, (2) money. But those two things cannot make up for their lack of experience. They certainly don't look like nerds, and they certainly wouldn't be nerds if they had not played Starcraft at all. But they are nerds, despite what they look like.

Not sure of now. He has NOT had a girlfriend. Those pictures are not of his girlfriend. And there are PLENTY of pictures of any progamer with girls. I have plenty too; it doesn't mean I date/like any of them.

The Patrol command makes units react faster than attack, so you should use that instead.

That only works for vultures, since their cooldown rate for patrol is half that of it's attack-move.
Patrol move won't work well for dragoons or goliaths, which was what this guy asked for.
