This weird, pathetic attempt to define what a nerd is makes you a huge mega nerd. OWNED.^.GG.^. But seriously dude if you actually want an argument: Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) nerd –noun Slang. 1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person. 2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd. American Heritage Dictionary - nerd also nurd (nûrd) n. Slang 1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person. 2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept. Starcraft pros are definitely nerds by the second definition. However, the second definition doesn't imply any negativity (except for the socially inept part which is debatable -Midas lol-) like the first one does so just because someone is labeled a nerd doesn't mean it has to have a bad connotation to it. The fact that I took the time to make this post probably makes me a nerd also somehow but I'm okay with it ~_~

They arent stupid, irritating or blah blah. They arent obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit. Its a job, not a hobby. They make hundreds of thousands of dollars off it. And who says they are socially inept?

I never said the first definition applied to them at all. They are most definitely single-minded and obsessed in what they do, spending hours and hours of practice a day playing starcraft. I never said they are socially inept. I said it was debatable, which means plenty of them are and plenty of them aren't but if all you do almost every single day is practice, eat, and sleep then you will probably be a bit socially inept, or at least more so than most people. Starcraft is most definitely a nonsocial activity. You are practicing and playing against others but this isn't using any social skills. Chatting with your teammates about strategy also doesn't help much with social skills. In fact if you want to be one of the best pros you better NOT have a girlfriend. The argument that because Starcraft is a job and not just a hobby is somewhat arguable but the fact is almost none of them make much money from starcraft, let alone $100k+. Only the top players can make a good living off starcraft and the top players are probably some of the biggest "nerds" of them, i.e. they are more obsessed with the game and they spend less time on social activities like girlfriends and more time on practicing, which makes them the best. But just because it is a payable job for some doesn't make them less of a nerd. Someone who writes computer programming 8 hours a day could probably be labeled a nerd too, even if he has a girlfriend or even a wife. Like I said, being called a nerd isn't a bad thing, at least I don't think it is. People who socialize a lot and never get obsessed over certain things never do anything great. Nerds are who are remembered in the history books more often than not. edit: If you want to say Starcraft is not a hobby that's fine, but it's definitely a pursuit, which is part of the definition.

It has online communities, team leagues and individual leagues. If you wanna call bw players nerds then you have to call pro atheletes nerds as well 2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept. hmmm.. I dont know about you but most pros go partying, do interviews and have other activities outside of progaming that require social aptitude. Sorry but most of these guys are just SMART and/or DIFFERENT. But that doesn't make them nerds because they're not socially inept and they're not obessed with a non-social hobby. They are part of a LARGE community, they get interviewed and they have a status of "pro athelete". GJ on owning yurself tho. No really. Highlighted my point even better. </ rant 2>

In fact, sir, your warped sense of what a nerd is is shaped by a stereotype of the genuine computer geek, which none of these guys are. Please... save yourself further embaressment. This is my last post on this topic but only because you debate in a very immature way and can't help but add insults to your posts to make up for the lack of substance. You just assume my definition of nerd is a computer nerd for some reason because I gave another example that used a computer. The fact is a large majority of jobs use a computer in some way so it would be harder to use an example that didn't use one. Your arguments follow weird trains of logic. You decide that because you think I think everyone who uses electronic equipment a lot is a nerd (I never said this) anyone that uses anything to excess is a nerd. The social component is an important part of it. And I still think Starcraft is a nonsocial activity. When you are playing serious games you do not socialize at all. Just because you are playing another person doesn't make it inherently social. Pros practice all day doing something where specifically you need to concentrate by yourself to do well at it. Chatting in between games about strategy is socializing but the chatter is usually only about the game at hand. Starcraft pros spend the majority of their days obsessively engaged in a nonsocial activity. Obviously almost everyone will socialize some part of the day so just because they may go out at night doesn't necessarily take away the nerd label. If that was the case I wonder who actually would be labeled a nerd. I guess our disagreement here is the social component of starcraft. I don't think there is much of one on the competitive pro level. To be competitive you have to reject socializing a lot of the time. On the amateur level where Starcraft is just a hobby then I agree it is social. But on the pro level they have to reject a lot of that socializing to practice and remain competitive. If starcraft pros that practice seriously 8+ hours a day (that means not stopping for an hour or two to chat in an online community or with other people which is what you seem to be implying on why Starcraft is social) aren't nerds then who is? Pros do spend the majority of their time pursuing a nonsocial activity (the act of actually playing the game) and this does apply to the definition of nerd. There are only a few, proud nerds who spend 100% of their time on their pursuits and hobbies and never go out with friends; these select few are the uber nerds. Maybe if you can actually make an intelligent post that actually has some real argements in it then I will reply. But if you can't then I'm fine with you having the last word so you can continue to feel superior to my pathetic embarrassing self.

Okay.. u say "Starcraft pros spend the majority of their days obsessively engaged in a nonsocial activity. Obviously almost everyone will socialize some part of the day so just because they may go out at night doesn't necessarily take away the nerd label. If that was the case I wonder who actually would be labeled a nerd." Alright... Clerk who types up oders on his computer for a day could not socialize Engineers who works out working models all day could not socialize Telemarketers who talks on the phone ironically cannot socialize Hey, stand up comedians cannot socialize because he only speaks to make people laugh, not friends. Oh wait did I mention that for every occupation you spend the majority of your day working hard and not "socializing"? Just because all the busy people go out at night doesn't mean they're not nerds. They spend their entire day obsessed with something unsociable. You just labled everybody as a nerd T_T ~____~
