Gretech announced that Gomtv and Wemakeprice have signed an MOU for a marketing partnership.
The partnership will start with sponsoring Gom Calssic Season 4.
Gom exp android app will be the one and only broadcast platform for the tournament, and otherwise, fans need to watch VODs which will be uploaded three days later.
wemakeprice is a social commerce company, aka "위메프".

darn, was hoping that you can watch them 'normally' without the wait lol. Thanks for translating!

afreeca actually gets a lot of mobile viewers, but I thought part of that for sonic was that anyone could join the main channel via mobile but there were the slot limits on the PC viewers (hence why sonic would have like 5 channels of 600 people for broadcasts). That was a few months ago.
Still, I have to imagine most mobile viewers are not watching a whole 2-3 hour broadcast on their phone, even if the raw numbers for mobile viewers sometimes look pretty good.
To break away from the current wave of sighs and disappointments for a moment, there is a new piece of information regarding the GOMTV Classics S4 if you have access to the GOM Exp android app. There is a banner when you open the app that says the Grand Opening Match of the GOM Classic S4 will be on air at 2 p.m. (assuming KST) on Sunday (2/16), which is not terrible considering the European and American time zones.
Perhaps there is a bit of positivity in all this after all regarding the biggest step for Brood War in 2014 as of yet.
God damn it, well I guess they will have their way and I will download this stupid app to watch it, although I've been more and more sick recently of being forced into using certain platforms. Ah well.
What could be the other way? Have a code that no one spoils results and there will be an official TL stream casting the vods when they are available? :/
Why couldnt GOm just use their GOMplayer, they use for starcraft 2? If they want to avoid mainstream options like twitch that bad.

3 days later? I don't even own a fucking smartphone... I was really looking forward to watching this live every Sunday, even if it would have just been in Korean.

This is some of the dumber shit I've seen come out of an esports organizer, which is saying something. I suppose it's a great way if you're looking to aggravate lots of people and generate negative brand association. Typically though, that is regarded as a bad move in business.

I tried watching a VOD with it and it worked fine except for the fact that when I tried to pick High Quality it would refuse to load. But you don't really need the resolution to be good to be able to watch BW, so it might not be that big of a deal.
Also, as far as I can tell the app is only in Korean, so it's not entirely clear to me why they went to all the trouble to do this English caster competition thing when foreigners are going to have kind of a hard time even viewing the stream.
e: Oh right, forgot they weren't doing the live stream like the previous GOM events. So yeah I guess it makes no difference.

All the English casts will be vods that they will run 3 days after the games have been played. Games will be played on Sunday every week for the next five weeks.

The English caster position was only for VODs in the first place. They're not doing an English stream.

Edit: Bisu'd
Yeah, but if this restriction is also placed on the Korean viewers it might kill interest and the potential of a full blown Classic S5 would have been shat on by GOM themselves.
Is this reality? It sounds like so much bullshit, I can't even believe it. How stupid, incredibly stupid can you be?!?! And they don't even includ iOS? Wat?! Can this be real?
I don't have a problem with them having us, use their service. The problem is that it's android exclusive. Let us use your PC service to watch the stream.
Well glad I cancelled my GOM subscription, I always felt like it was too much compared to the prices of other eSports tournaments, nevertheless I wanted to support SC2 as much as I could. This is absurd that they would force you to watch over their mobile app, like wtf I need at least a average sized computer monitor to really get into games. Ugh terrible move by GOM, but knowing their long history I guess it doesn't surprise me, although this almost goes too far.
Hehe, im not gonna be sitting and watching my tiny fucking screen for hours. What were they thinking? You've just lost the bulk of your foreign viewers.
Off-topic, but always so weird to see Koreans use the first letters of each word in a phrase to make things shorter... Korea's Got Talent = KoGotTal, Superstar K = SuK, We Got Married = WeMarry, WeMakePrice = WeMaP.
I think its cause every korean has a smartphone and theyre appealing to that and push mobile. But the 3 day thing is dumb... thats not a good way to promote an app by stripping the other methods such as pc..
It might be due to ad block not available on smartphones? I'm really trying to reason why GOM would do this, they don't seem stupid... There must be a reason.

This is a way to push their Android platform, the goal is introduce push more users to the Android app which they think is high quality and not used enough right now. Obviously foreigners are not the main audience, but in Korea, Samsung Android products are very popular, so this won't affect viewership much there.
The culture over there actually loves watching things on their phone, in Korea you can buy phones that come with TV on them, and if you remember John's talk about how the shift towards mobile phones had hurt the growth if sc2, etc. I'm actually not surprised at this move by GOM, and I think you all need to take a step back and recognize it's not so bad.
The tech industry is really pushing mobile right now, so lots of people are trying to get their audiences to convert and get product loyalty early on.
I also just downloaded the app and it's really good. There's enough English translations that it's not difficult to find your way around and it's really clean and fast. I won't mind at all watching on my nexus 7 or S3, that's usually how I watch stream/VOD anyways.

But he definitely has a point. Dont know about other place but like 99% of the Koreans in my firm use a Galaxy device, and so does their wives & kids (it's weird that cellphones are strictly Samsung but monitor/tv are LG). And then there're popular brands which adopt android like LG or Pantech SKY.
GOM must be targeting something, they aint so dumb when it comes to their domestic audience. Meanwhile, I find this move rather interesting as Ive been watching tons of twitch on my phone these days because it's simply convenient (at work, on the bed, in toilet etc.). Plus it's nice to see iPhone users being salty once in a while

Yes, and telling a country that uses technology differently than your country "pretty dumb" is elitist bullshit, but lets just call a spade a spade shall we.
GOM is trying to make their Korean fans happy, if Foreign fans made them money they'd be willing to help them too. But its obvious a Korean company would focus more on Korean practices than it does non-Korean practices.

Let me get this clear : if I want to watch this live, I need to watch this w/ a phone (which I won't be doing)? And afterwards, if I want to catch the matches, I can do it three days later... where exactly? I shouldn't need to ask this but I will be able to watch this on my computer right?
I feel I sound like an idiot asking these questions, but I think we've received so little information regarding this tournament I just need to ask other people. Can't find a schedule, can't find anything. If there is some kind of tournament site for this, link me to it, because I can't find shit. I don't understand why there isn't atleast a little more advertisement on the gomtv site but whatever.

If you want to watch it live, you need to download their app.
There are ways of using their app on a PC, so you can watch it on a PC, and then link the PC to a state of art projector able to light up a 900 square foot wall so you can tail gate while watching SC2
The only thing limiting it to a user's phone is laziness.
However, if you do feel justifiably lazy, you can also watch it on Twitch where GOM broadcasts all their other free content. I don't think GOM will suddenly make a partnership with MySpace and simply post 10,000 gif snippets of the matches each day.
GOM isn't targeting foreigners with this tournament, there are too few viewers for them to care. In Korea, it's much more acceptable since most people are using Android, not iOS, and mobile phone usage for watching TV and streams is more widespread. I expect you'll be seeing similar things in the west eventually though.

Will they be doing that, though? It's my understanding that SC2 tournaments use Twitch because Blizzard makes them (which ruined the GSL because their VOD system is so much better bitch bitch moan moan my SC2 is all Destiny/Catz now).

My big hope for this tournament was that it'd create a lot of new foreign BW fans as SC2 fans checked out an HD BW stream with big-name casters they were comfortable with, and grew to like the game. So much for growing the scene.

I have watched many a Code A and S on twitch now, if they do not do it on Twitch they will have to make a deal with a new streaming site and try to market that new site to the fan base, something they don't really want to do.
To be honest, I'm more frustrated by their method of recruiting commentators than this debacle. Perhaps their promotion of mobile platform could be acceptable considering their main target audience, but combined with the English commentary contest... nope, not going to watch this one.

Sure that's the beauty of Koreans being able to take advantage of using the DMB to watch tv anywhere you are. You don't need 3g,4g, different flavors of LTE or even wifi to watch live tv like the rest of the world. You can even watch live tv in a taxi if a DMB antennae is fixed on the car. So I can understand this is what they need to do for their domestic market. The problem this causes for a global broadcasting company, like gom, is that their content doesn't reach their entire audience that buys passes and adds to their overall viewership. It's like after all these years of support we've given them they are slapping us in the face and saying the foreign market isn't important enough. They should do both and broadcast with no blackouts. Seems like they are going full retard with this to me and you never want to go full retard.
Wow. Way to hype a tournament only to basically surrender credit for helping the BW scene to Sonic and the other "amateur" casters and players who actually know how to run tournaments and get people watching. Still, money is involved. Maybe that'll impress enough simple types to get them watching anyway. I suppose the viewing issue will be much less of a problem for people actually in Korea, because a larger portion of them would actually choose andriod supporting devices, right?

I've been trying to get bluestacks to work but im really unfamiliar with android settings. Does anyone know how you set up keyboards to be able to type in korean?
you know what I've been thinking about. I think someone mentioned it earlier in the thread but someone who is able to run it well enough on their android phone can easily link it to their pc so that they can watch it there then they can stream that like normal. I don't see it as being much of a problem and it would help those who can't watch it on their phones or who just don't want to bother with it. I have an android phone but I don't have space left to install more apps so I guess I'll be waiting for english vods to come out.

You have to chose Korean language in the keyboard settings, if it's not available you can download a third party keyboard app like go keyboard.

ya the korean wouldnt show up on the keyboard settings I'll get that third party app then. thank you!
So... Why are people freaking out that they have to wait 3 days to watch the VODs?
It will only suck if someone doing BW news on TL doesn't have the sense to keep spoilers off the front page.
I admit I don't understand why GOM would want to do it this way from their own perspective, but it's at worst mildly inconvenient and realistically what I was going to do anyway. I have an android phone and I'm not going to bother installing I random app lol. I'll just wait for the VODs on the youtube account.

Telling a bunch of fans that have just been told that they must own and use a specific mobile device to watch their favorite game to "take a step back" is pretty dumb.
Yeah because it is not like you can use more then one way to let people watch your content and please everyone including everyone in Korea...
And its not like GOM is trying to push their specific product line instead of simply publishing into a generalized market space--oh right! They are pushing a specific product line, their product line. They are trying to create a successful mobile app which is the current technological trend amongst software and marketing companies and is where all the money is flowing through when it comes through adspace and revenue tracking.
But no, white guy from across the pond wants Asians to cater to his needs and wants.
There is adspace and revenue tracking on normal TV and streams to you know. One does not have to exclude the other.
And there's a reason that Gom isn't knocking on Hulu's door to trying to convince them that SC2 will generate massive bank for them.
Companies choose how to focus their product and if their product is a phone app it is against their best interest to not push their phone app which they have paid engineers to design, develop, implement, and fucking support.
The amount of entitlement people have now a days. As someone even said earlier in this thread--you can run the app on your PC. You can, right now, watch the games live ON YOUR PC. The only limiting factor is your lazy ass not wanting to get the app.
No the limiting factor is the fact that. OUR LAZY ASSES didn't even necessarily know that the app works on PC without fancy work arounds. You know they could have easily said in that little press release that the app is PC compatible. It's their stupidity that brought all this drama.
Seriously I'm completely okay with having to use a program of their choosing on my PC to watch, but in the press statement they made it seem as if it's android exclusive.

cmon guys, let's not fight over this lol. You both present valid points. GOM should've been more forward about the app and that you can watch it on your PC from the app but at the same time, if someone is still interested in watching, they would've at least download the program and given it a try to see what features are available. One of my first thoughts when I read this after 'why would they make it mobile exclusive?' was what if you can just watch it on your PC through your phone since I've been able to do it with some other devices in the past (wm 6.5 phone). I wouldn't expect everyone to know that you are able to do that but it's nothing to get riled up over imo although language could've been phrased better on Magpie's part I'll admit

What the hell? Many of us are going to watch it
Personally, I'll watch the VODs
Yeah... Sheer stupidity is just oozing from his post.
This happens to be the BW forum, obviously most of us will watch it one way or another.

We were able to download the app and it says 2pm KST but we don't know who are playing. Does anyone have any update and is 2pm KST the correct time?

GOM exp player works fine on my bluestacks installation but I have no idea what I am doing with it since it's all in korean. That's kind of a pain. Is there any way to translate at least some part of it inside the app?

Mine is just stuck in Portrait mode instead of landscape and I can't rotate it at all so it's kind of shitty. But it's working tho.
